Bad Habits That Kill Your Metabolism

You may already suspect your metabolism slows as you age. According to research in the Public Health Nutrition journal, youre right. In a review of data on energy expenditure, researchers found getting older is associated with progressive declines in basal metabolic rate. On top of that, many daily habits can drain your metabolism even further.

But you dont have to go down without a fight. Cut out the below habits and watch your metabolism and energy levels improve.

Eating a nutritious breakfast is a great way to start your day. Because your metabolism slows during sleep, eating can fire it up and help you burn more calories throughout the day. According to Rush University Medical Center, When you eat breakfast, youre telling your body that there are plenty of calories to be had for the day. When you skip breakfast, the message your body gets is that it needs to conserve rather than burn any incoming calories.

OK, so its about more than just eating something in the morning. If you grab a sugary donut or eat a muffin in the car, youre setting yourself up to crash later. Instead, choose something with filling protein and fiber like eggs, Greek yogurt and berries, or whole-wheat toast topped with peanut butter.

Vi Er And Regulation Of Adipose Tissue Distribution

Sexual dimorphisms in body fat distribution are well-described. Men, on average, have less total body fat but more central/intra-abdominal adipose tissue, whereas women tend to have more total fat that favors gluteal/femoral and sc depots . After menopause, fat distribution shifts in women to a phenotype more similar to that of men however, estrogen replacement therapy prevents the male-patterned accumulation of intra-abdominal adipose . Additionally, estrogen treatment of male-to-female transsexuals increases the amount of sc adipose tissue accrual relative to intra-abdominal adipose tissue . Therefore, estrogens have been proposed as regulators of fat distribution.

Signs Your Hormones Are Causing Weight Gain

Several different factors can cause belly fat, including gender, age, dietary habits and amounts of physical exercise and hormonal misfiring. So how can you tell if hormones are the cause of your abdominal weight gain? While you can look out for some signs, its important to discuss any of your questions with a doctor to identify the root cause. Sometimes its not always so obvious and can vary from person to person.

Here are a few warning signs and symptoms you can look out for to help identify the cause of your belly fat:

What Are The Seven Hormones That Prevent Weight Loss

Women, Hormones, Metabolism & Energy Expenditure

The seven hormones that prevent weight loss are estrogen, progesterone, cortisol, thyroid T3 and T4, insulin, leptin, and Gheril Hormones are chemical messengers produced by glands in the body which tell cells what to do. Many factors can affect your hormone levels, such as stress, sex, age, and diet.

Estrogen estrogen does not directly affect your metabolism, but it can cause water retention, resulting in bloating and weight gain. Estrogen levels fluctuate during the menstrual cycle, and if you are pre or post-menopausal, this can also increase bloating and weight gain.

Progesterone this hormone is often produced during the second half of your menstrual cycle. After pregnancy, progesterone levels tend to be low during weight loss which could cause water retention and bloat. If you have too much progesterone, it can also prevent ovulation, stopping you from losing weight.

Cortisol Cortisol is the stress hormone high cortisol levels can lead to weight gain, especially around the belly area. Cortisol levels are highest first thing in the morning, and if you are constantly stressed throughout the day, this will impact your weight loss efforts. Some ways to manage stress are meditation, yoga, and getting plenty of sleep.

Leptin Leptin is known as the satisfaction hormone it tells your brain when you are full and can help with weight loss. If leptin levels are too low, this could make you feel hungry even if your body does not need food, leading to overeating.

C Er And Adipose Tissue Distribution

Estrogens are produced in the adipocytes and increase in proportion to total body adiposity . ER is expressed in adipose tissue . Mice of both sexes with a targeted deletion of the ER gene have increased adiposity, with a near doubling of visceral adipose depots relative to their age-matched wild-type counterparts . However, inguinal adipose depots also increased in ERKO mice, suggesting that ER elimination may not target only intra-abdominal depots. Thus, body fat distribution results should be interpreted with caution in rodents. Still, these data are in contrast to those of the ERKO mouse, which is not obese , indicating that ER is more important than ER in preventing adipose tissue deposition. Reduced ER expression and impaired ER function have been linked with increased prevalence of certain aspects of the metabolic syndrome in both male and female humans and rodents , and certain polymorphisms of the human ER gene are associated with abnormal adiposity . In a cross-sectional study, over 2000 middle-aged, premenopausal Japanese women with the ER gene polymorphism had increased fat mass and increased waist-hip ratios relative to those with the normal genotype . The polymorphism did not affect adiposity in postmenopausal women. Thus, polymorphisms of the human ER gene may predispose to increased intra-abdominal adiposity and its related health risks.

Adjust Your Coping Strategies And Address Your Stress Levels To Help Reduce Weight Gain

If your fat is making you feel stressed or vice versa for that matter dont disregard that link. There is a stress-fat connection, Peeke says. If you walk around completely stressed all the time, your cortisol levels will increase, and that will make it easy for you to deposit fat deep inside the belly.

Cortisol, known as the stress hormone, stimulates the liver to increase production and release of blood sugar and helps the body convert fats, proteins, and carbohydrates into usable energy. As part of the bodys fight or flight response, cortisol is released during stressful times to give your body a natural energy boost, but when cortisol levels are constantly high because of chronic stress, these same effects may result in insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

To reduce stress and potentially belly fat, employ quick and simple techniques to help calm you down.

Hormone Type : Metabolic Sputter Metabolism

GCSE Biology – Endocrine System & Hormones #59

Hormone Type 5 is Metabolic Sputter. Also referred to as perimenopause, this hormone type occurs when the level of one important female hormone is constantly peaking and crashing.

Women with this hormone type will experience increased anxiety, difficulty sleeping, night sweats and hot flashes, unpredictable periods, and sometimes sudden mood swings. This will often feel like a never-ending case of premenstrual syndrome .

The Metabolic Sputter will lead to a gradual increase in fat. If you have this hormone type, you may have noticed that none of your old diet and exercise tricks are making a dent.

D Ers And Insulin Sensitivity In The Liver

In summary, ER deficiency impairs lipid homeostasis in both skeletal muscle and liver of rodents, thereby decreasing the ability of insulin to suppress HGP and to promote skeletal muscle glucose utilization. As a result, activation of ER during a HFD and genetic leptin resistance improves insulin resistance induced by ectopic lipid accumulation in skeletal muscle . Nonetheless, the effect of ER in mediating insulin sensitivity via central mechanisms remains to be determined.

Choose Fats Wisely And Eat Meals With Healthy Fats To Counter Weight Gain

Fat adds flavor, makes our food taste better, and is part of a healthy diet. So the good news is that it isnt necessary or recommended to completely eliminate it from your diet altogether. You just need to learn how to be more choosy, says Palumbo. Think more walnuts, fewer Whoppers.

The healthiest fats are the ones that derive from plant sources like olives and nuts, but keep in mind that healthy fats like those found in avocados have the same number of calories as the fat found in a hot fudge sundae. An ounce of nuts has 170 calories, so you have to be very careful, says Palumbo. The same goes with extra-virgin olive oil. The American way is to go overboard, so you have to be extremely cautious when you use it and measure the amounts of fats and oils that you consume.

And restaurant meals are not your friends in the fat department, either. Restaurants are not in business to make us healthy. They add a lot of flavor carriers, which are known as fats, Palumbo says. Salad dressings are one of the biggest sources of added fat in our diet, so order your salad with the dressing on the side.

Obesity And Sex Hormones

Hormones

Body fat distribution plays an important role in the development of obesity-related conditions such as heart disease, stroke and some forms of arthritis. Fat around our abdomen is a higher risk factor for disease than fat stored on our bottom, hips and thighs. It seems that oestrogens and androgens help to decide body fat distribution. Oestrogens are sex hormones made by the ovaries in pre-menopausal women. They are responsible for prompting ovulation every menstrual cycle. Men and postmenopausal women do not produce much oestrogen in their testes or ovaries. Instead, most of their oestrogen is produced in their body fat, although at much lower amounts than what is produced in pre-menopausal ovaries. In younger men, androgens are produced at high levels in the testes. As a man gets older, these levels gradually decrease. The changes with age in the sex hormone levels of both men and women are associated with changes in body fat distribution. While women of childbearing age tend to store fat in their lower body , older men and postmenopausal women tend to increase storage of fat around their abdomen . Postmenopausal women who are taking oestrogen supplements donât accumulate fat around their abdomen. Animal studies have also shown that a lack of oestrogen leads to excessive weight gain.

How Does Leptin Work

Leptin is made by adipose tissue and is secreted into the circulatory system, where it travels to the hypothalamus. Leptin tells the hypothalamus that we have enough fat, so we can eat less or stop eating. Leptin may also increase metabolism, although there is conflicting research on this point.

Generally, the more fat you have, the more leptin you make the less food youll eat and the higher your metabolic rate . Conversely, the less fat you have, the less leptin you have, and the hungrier youll be.

Basically, for weight loss the more leptin the better.

Animal Handling And Sample Collection

We captured wolves using modified or padded leghold traps set along the road system with a variety of commercially produced lures and canid urine used as attractants . We immobilized restrained wolves with either tiletamine HCl and zolazepam HCl , or a combination of ketamine and medetomidine administered with a jab pole. We recorded sex and age category for each wolf , which was determined by palpating the epiphyseal process on the front legs . We collected hair samples from the shoulder area with scissors from 23 wolves and by plucking from 2 wolves. We collected approximately 0.5âcm of material from the tip of each claw with dog nail clippers. Hair and claw tips were stored in resealable plastic bags or paper envelopes at room temperature until processed. In total, 31 claw tip, 23 guard hair, and 25 undercoat samples were used in our study .

Ovarian Hormones Nicotine Responsiveness And Er Isoform Expression In The Brain

The impact of nicotine on the ER isoforms, and how this affects behavior, is mostly unexplored. However, some investigations looking at nonbehavioral studies have found that nicotine reduced ER expression in the hippocampus and cortical regions of female rats . Martin and colleagues showed that tobacco smoke condensate activated estrogen signaling in human MCF-7 breast cancer cells, which was validated via competitive binding assays and transcriptional activity of the nuclear receptors . They also found that nicotine reduced the expression of ERs and showed that OVX Sprague Dawley female rats treated with E2 and low levels of TSC had induced levels of the ER-target gene Pgr, but E2 co-treated with an antagonist had reduced levels. These results suggest that TSC may have an estrogenic effect, supported by another study by Niwa and colleagues in MCF-7 breast cancer cells, which showed that TSC induced kinase pathways that activate ER . Others have shown that E2 treatment in rainbow trout induced ER mRNA expression but suppressed ER levels in the liver . The effects of TSC may be through specific nicotine receptor subunits , which induce signaling cascades that control physiological responses. Whether the effects of nicotine on estrogen signaling occur in the brain to regulate behavior is unknown, but here we indicate that nicotine suppresses the effects of E2 on the expression of ER in the NAcore and VTA regions.
