What Is Maca Root

Maca is the root of a plant native to the Andes in Peru.In South America, this sweet and slightly nutty root is commonly used to boost fertility. Grown predominantly in the mountains of central Peru, you might be surprised to know maca is actually a member of the cruciferous familythe same that includes broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and kale. It also goes by the name Peruvian ginseng and has gained a reputation for boosting libido and sex drive in both men and women, but cultures have used it to promote vitality for many years.

In recent decades, researchers have also found that maca may help uplift mood, offset some of the side effects from medications like SSRIs, and stave off hot flashes. More details on this below.

Youll usually find maca root as a powder, in capsule form, or as a tincture or extract. Its relatively safe at even high doses, but youll want to be aware of how youre feeling and discontinue and speak with your holistic provider if you feel any negative side effects.

Hormone Helper contains 1.5 grams of maca root extract, formulated to optimize hormone and metabolic health.

Finally, Magdalena also asked me about what form of maca is best . To a certain extent, I think this is a matter of preference, but I will say that I chose raw powder over gelatinized for my superfoods blend. While many of the studies have used gel tablets, I feel that the raw form better preserves the beneficial enzymes and nutrients. Gelatinized maca is heated at high temperatures to remove the plants starch, but that impacts the enzymes and other beautiful components of the root in my opinion.

As one example, glucosinolates have been found to be sensitive to heating. The challenge is, however, that there isnt specific information as to how this degradation occurs at varying levels of heat during the gelatinization process, nor comparisons of this degraded form to non-gelatinized/raw versions of maca. So the jury is still out on whether gelatinized or raw might be better in regards to some components of the root. More research is required.

For now, knowing that I wanted optimal amounts of glucosinolates in my product, I did find a supplier that could provide me with a high percentage of glucosinolates in my raw maca . I am very happy to provide that formula in my blend, and Ill continue to pour over new research as it becomes available. I feel confident in my choices related to my selecting the right maca that I feel good about putting my name on!

I have heard some people say that gelatinized helps with digestion.

What Is Maca Root Used For

Organic Maca in 2020

Maca root, scientifically referred to as Lepidium meyenii, is a cruciferous vegetable native to the Andes of Peru. It looks similar to a radish or a turnip youd find in a health food store.

This nutrient powerhouse is an excellent source of protein, fiber, vitamin C and iron. It also contains over 20 different amino acids and phytonutrients. Its also rich in plant sterols that are biochemically similar to estrogen, testosterone and progesterone.

What you might not know about maca root is that its chock-full of inflammation-fighting antioxidants and micronutrients that can help support optimal hormone balance, energy levels, and mood and memory. In addition, being classified as an adaptogen means that it can help the body quite literally adapt to specific stressors like being busy at work or getting sick that might place your body in a prolonged state of fight or flight. When this happens, you might experience that wired but tired feeling and have trouble calming down.

In addition to whole root and powder forms, you can usually find it in capsules, liquids and extracts at your local health food store or online.

As An Adaptogen Maca Helps Your Body Deal With Stress And Hormone Imbalances

Probably in response to surviving its own harsh growing environment, Peruvian maca has been shown to have adaptogenic properties.

What does maca being an adaptogen mean for you? Well, for centuries it has been able to adapt, to resist disease and environmental stresses. The good news?

âMaca is able to pass along its adaptogenic properties to you as well! As an adrenal adaptogen, it nourishes and helps your body deal with chronic stress, including both mental and physical stressors. Additionally, it helps your body adapt to hormone imbalances, whether those be with your sex hormones, thyroid or elsewhere in your endocrine system.â

I use my Mighty Maca Plus superfoods drink in all of my womens restorative health programs for this reason!

The adrenals are typically my first focus in solving any number of health symptoms and conditions.

We know that stress and its effects on our adrenals can exacerbate hormone imbalances throughout our bodies, including impacting our thyroid health .

Maca For Female Hormone Balance Pms Menopause Adrenals

If I had to choose just one superfood, then maca would get my top vote. It just cant be denied, maca is incredible stuff. For me I dare say, perhaps even life-changing. Amidst its myriad of different benefits, maca is known for its ability to somewhat mysteriously and magically balance the hormone system. Theres a little bit of science behind that, but the main evidence is in the fact that lots of people who take it notice a significant improvement in hormonal related issues.

When looking at medicinal benefits of foods, I have a paradoxical scepticism, balanced with a healthy open mind. I dont blindly assume that something will work, yet I stay open to the possibilities. I am someone who has experienced significant improvement in endocrine function with daily use of maca.

The Benefits Of Maca Powder For Your Hormones

Last updated on by Alisa Vitti

What is Maca?

Maca root powder might be the latest superfood to fill up your Facebook feed, but its benefits are not exactly news. This ancient natural remedy happens to be very well researched and that research has revealed its hormone-balancing, hormonal symptom-soothing properties. Maca root powder is an adaptogen, which means it supports your whole endocrine system to produce the right amounts of hormones you need. Maca can help your body adapt to stressful life situations that might otherwise deplete your bodys hormone production and cause symptoms.

Maca root powder is a wonderful resource to have at hand, especially at certain critical times in your life when its properties can be the most beneficial. That said, maca is not for everyone and anyone, all of the time. Digging deeper and knowing more about this powerful supplement will help you to get the most out of it.

Does Maca cure hormone imbalance?

Although you may have heard some say that maca can solve all your period problems and regulate your cycles, I dont recommend seeing it as a miracle cure for all hormonal ills. I have never seen one product resolve a womans PMS, PCOS, cramps, acne, irrregular cycles or infertility issues on its own. Just adding in a supplement or one food, however super, unfortunately rarely works to help a woman overcome hormonal symptoms.

Maca provides incredible anti-inflammatory properties which are effective at strengthening our bodies at a cellular level. A 2007 study promoted that it is responsible at improving lipid profiles, glucose metabolism and cellular antioxidant concentrations . These benefits alone are capable of reducing risk for cardiovascular dysfunction, heart disease and diabetes.

Maca has been shown to prevent bone loss in an ovariectomized rat indicating macas abilities to improve bone density . Normally the loss of ovaries to secrete estrogen results in an increased catabolic state and therefore increased bone density loss.

Another study provides evidence that maca is able to enhance blood flow into cartilage cells. The extract of RNI-249 from this plant was found to assist in preserving cartilage cells through inhibiting catabolic pathways involved in breaking down substances and instead activating anabolic mechanisms.

Magdalena also asked about whether maca can help with those terrible mood-swings.

While she uses my Mighty Maca Plus for a little pick-up some afternoons , she wasnt sure how it affects overall mood, especially more serious symptoms like depression and anxiety.

Well, given that maca is an adaptogen, which helps our body deal with stressors and have a healthier stress response, it would make logical sense that maca could help regulate our mood as well as our hormones, right?

And studies have shown that maca may reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. In two smaller studies involving postmenopausal women, depression and anxiety were reduced.

The women in my restorative health programs swear by my Mighty Maca blends ability to keep that nasty, moody witch off their shoulders.

What Is Gelatanised Maca

Gelatinisation happens when the maca is heated on a low heat, allowing the roots to separate from its fibrous parts. Most of the nutrients are maintained during this process. Gelatinisation essentially removes the starchy carbohydrates, creating a high concentration of beneficial nutrients. It contains a higher ratio of nutrients than raw maca.

Maca May Make You Feel A Little Frisky

MegaFood, Daily Maca Plus for Women Powder, Helps Maintain Hormonal ...

There is plenty of research on maca supporting both its libido-enhancing effects, as well as its ability to improve fertility. One study observed that taking maca improved erectile dysfunction, and another found that treatment with maca improved sexual desire .

As you mightve guessed, theres a lot that can influence your desire for your partner, including your energy levels that day, any stress you might be dealing withright down to things like caring for children and running a household. And while maca cant help with the latter two, it might be great for boosting your overall mood and helping you deal with stress so you can actually get in the mood.

The same properties by which maca helps boost libido also help to improve mood. Plus, its ability to modulate cortisol and support adrenal function are a big help to give your libido the green light. While the research is still early, studies suggest that maca might be most beneficial for menopausal or post-menopausal women who want to support a healthy libido .

Finding The Perfect Maca For You

Magdalena asked me to talk about, the right maca for womens hormone health. But before I talk about that, lets discuss the importance of you buying only a quality pure and safe product.

So what does quality maca look like?

First, only buy organic Peruvian maca, and I suggest you also look for organic certification on the label. I purchase only certified organic maca for Mighty Maca Plus. You also want your organic maca to be from Peru versus somewhere else, as that will also ensure it is GMO-free The Peruvian government currently bans GMO in maca harvests.

I think Magdalena has talked about this previously, but a lot of maca is now coming out of other countries, including a good deal coming from China.

The problem with maca from other countries can be with the unregulated growing methods. You wont see much in the way of organic or non-GMO, and the growing practices may include a variety of endocrine disrupting fertilizers and pesticides. There are also a lot of pollutants in general in China in the air and water sources.

You can purchase color-specific maca, which is harvested from mixed crop fields and is usually hand-sorted. But I dont personally feel that is the optimal strategy. The maca fields in Peru are typically planted with multiple phenotypes. Due to the windy conditions, cross-contamination is common. The maca I purchase for Mighty Maca Plus is naturally harvested from organic farms, to include all phenotypes of the roots.

Maca: A Root For Almost Anything

Maca root is a tuber or root about the size or shape of a radish that grows exclusively in the Andes mountains of Peru. These roots are commonly white and yellow, though they can come in pink and purple colors as well as gray and black.

While maca is about the size and shape of a radish, it has a nutty, almost sweet taste. Some explain it as being a bit like butterscotch! Some people add it to sweet treats because of this .

Why Maca Makes Some Women Feel Sick

Some women find that maca causes unpleasant side effects including stomach bloating, cramps, nausea and also heart palpitations or the jitters. These side effects may occur partly because your maca is:

  • Not pure: Macas popularity as a superfood has led to a massive output of powders and other supplements. Some companies, in trying to get a piece of the action, have put out maca products that are mixed with other starches or incipients that can cause digestive upset for some people. They may also be contaminated with molds or other impurities. Additionally, other countries have jumped on the bandwagon and started producing maca outside Peru. China has been growing their maca crop in the Yunnan province, an area struggling with pollution problems. This means that maca from China may be impure due to exposure to pesticides, chemical contaminants , and solvents used during the manufacturing process. Some Chinese maca crops have been genetically modified which means they are not the same as the traditional maca grown in the Peruvian highlands.
  • Over-dosed: If you start a dose thats too high, it could make your symptoms worse. Similarly, if you start using maca and think more is better, taking too much could also cause symptoms. So its always better to start with a small dose.
  • Taken on an empty stomach: If you have a sensitive stomach, always take your maca with food.
