FAQ: Can secondary testosterone therapy help with erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction can be caused by a variety of physical and physiological factors, which are not just related to low or high testosterone levels. From all the current research available, if you have normal testosterone levels it doesnt make a difference to the erectile dysfunction you may be experiencing if you increase testosterone production.

So many sources state that low testosterone by itself rarely causes erectile dysfunction, and this particular article written by the Urology Care Foundation highlights clearly that erectile dysfunction is rarely caused by low testosterone.

They also state that it is totally normal for some men to experience trouble with their erections from time to time. However, erectile dysfunction that progresses or happens frequently during sex should be treated immediately.

If frequent problems with erections are what you encounter, ensure you visit a doctor right away to make sure they get to the bottom of it. Your doctor will also then be able to rule out or begin treating some serious health conditions which can get worse with time if not addressed as soon as any unusual symptoms are noticed.

How Low Testosterone Levels Affect Sex

When it comes to low testosterone, many of the symptoms can affect your sex life. For example, low libido can make you less interested in sex. Low energy levels can also make it difficult to take part in an active and rigorous sex life. However, there are some other symptoms that may indirectly affect sex.

Mood changes like depression, irritability, and anxiety can also take a toll on your sex life. They can make it difficult to be interested in sex or may lead to relationship problems that affect intimacy with your partner.

Mood changes and body changes like weight gain and loss of muscle mass can also lead to feeling self-conscious, which can make it hard to engage in the bedroom. Many men start to avoid sexual situations when they feel embarrassed about their body.

Theres also a chance that low testosterone levels can also affect erectile function. While research is still out on just how significant a role testosterone plays in erections, some evidence suggests that it may influence erections, either directly or indirectly.

Cholesterol Ed And Testosterone

What We Treat

Cholesterol is an essential chemical that helps the body runs smoothly especially blood vessels.

Among other things, cholesterol is needed to make testosterone, estrogen, cortisol, and many other hormones that the body uses to keep arteries clear from plaque or clots.

Cholesterol is converted to useful nutrients through the liver. The liver processes fatty acids helping the body absorb important vitamins like A, D, E, and K. The brain signals the pituitary gland to release stimulating hormones down to the Leydig cells in the testicles where cholesterol is converted to testosterone. Leydig cells simply absorb the cholesterol floating through the bloodstream.

Enter low testosterone. As men get older, the Leydig cells slow or stop converting cholesterol into testosterone. Researchers believe the Leydig cells stop converting with age due to an imbalance or changes to chemical reactions at the cellular level. Some researchers are looking to stem cells to validate if there is a way to reverse the aging of the Leydig cell processor, but for now, testosterone replacement therapy is the best option for men suffering from low testosterone and the common symptoms.

Epidemiology And Etiology Of Ed

ED affects approximately 30% of men in the US. Prevalence increases with age, with complete ED tripling from 5% in men 40y of age to 15% in men 70y of age. Major risk factors for ED include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression, and smoking. Psychogenic components play an important role in some patients, but organic causes account for 7085% of cases., For many patients, both psychogenic and organic factors are involved. Organic causes are often classified into four groups: neurogenic, vasculogenic, hormonal, and anatomic . The prevalence of these causes depends upon the exact study and the study population being examined. In a retrospective study, vasculogenic causes accounted for 72% of cases in men under the age of 40, while neurogenic causes accounted for 12%. Other studies have suggested that 1020% of ED cases may involve hormonal abnormalities., Additional factors, such as prescription medications, may also contribute to ED.

Its best to aim for a BMI in the normal range, which is between 18.5 and 24.9.

Does Low Testosterone Levels Cause Erectile Dysfunction

Testosterone Therapy and Erectile Dysfunction

Yes but only in a small number of men is low testosterone a cause on its own for erectile dysfunction. The majority of men with erectile dysfunction have other health concerns whereby erectile dysfunction is a secondary health issue. For many men, atherosclerosis is the most common underlying health concern behind erectile dysfunction.

Atherosclerosis is where the arteries have built up plaque in them that hardens the arteries, making it harder for blood to flow properly around the body. If you have atherosclerosis it means that one or more of your blood vessels are too narrow or are blocked.

This all gets set in motion when the heart pumps, which then helps the blood in our veins to get to the different parts of the body it is needed, which is a normal cycle. For this blood to be pumped to the penis area, the blood has to first go through arteries in the stomach area and then it branches off.

In short, in healthy people this isnt an issue, but in those with atherosclerosis this causes erectile dysfunction by reducing blood flow to the penis and the entire genital area during arousal.

An erection requires more blood to flow into the penis to make it swell and grow. For someone with atherosclerosis this is not able to happen as the arteries cannot widen or dilate due to the hardened plaque on the narrowing artery walls or the blockages that have formed from the plaque.

Common Symptoms Of Low Testosterone

Although low testosterone likely isnt to blame for ED in most men, it can cause a wide range of different symptoms.

Some of these symptoms may have a major negative impact on your sexual health and general quality of life.

  • Lower muscle mass and physical strength

  • Changes in mood, such as symptoms of depression

  • Difficulty focusing, remembering things and doing well at work

If you have low testosterone, you may develop one or several of these symptoms.

The more of these symptoms you notice, the more important it is to get your testosterone levels checked for a potential deficiency.

Viagra Won’t Work For You Low Testosterone Men Warned

Can Testosterone Help Erectile Dysfunction?

More than half the Viagra prescribed to men is not working, says an expert in sexual medicine.

Dr Geoffrey Hackett, a consultant urologist, says men with erectile dysfunction could be “wasting hundreds of pounds on tablets” when their real issue is low testosterone.

He was speaking at the launch of new guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of sexual disorders.

The guidelines are published in the journals Maturitas and Human Fertility.

Dr Hackett, sexual health specialist at Good Hope Hospital in Birmingham and former chairman of the British Society for Sexual Medicine, says the most common sexual problem men see their GP about is erectile dysfunction.

It affects 40% of men over 40 years old, and more than one in five men with erectile dysfunction have a testosterone deficiency.

Testosterone levels in men peak in their mid-20s then slowly decline throughout life, but a fall can also be a sign of underlying health problems.

“Low testosterone is linked to increased risk of mortality from diabetes and cardiovascular events so diagnosing it is very important in preventing those diseases,” Dr Hackett said.

Can Testosterone Therapy Help Erectile Dysfunction

Testosterone has many different functions in the body, but one of its most important involves developing male sexual characteristics as well as sexual function. Aside from this, it also has a role in bone growth, red blood cells, and muscle bulk. Although there certainly is evidence that testosterone therapy can help erectile dysfunction, there is also some degree of uncertainty surrounding this form of treatment. For one thing, it does not work for everyone. Still, it does have benefits and some men have certainly seen improvement. When a man’s body does not make enough testosterone it may sometimes be the cause of erectile dysfunction, but this is relatively rare. When this is the case, however, then testosterone therapy could ease the problem.

Before Viagra was being used to treat erectile dysfunction testosterone therapy was the main option. Although testosterone is necessary for libido and an erection, it isn’t exactly a universal cure for erectile dysfunction either. There are a number of men with ED who have just the right levels of testosterone. In this case, testosterone therapy probably isn’t the solution and most doctors wouldn’t think of prescribing testosterone. Other symptoms should also be present like fatigue and a decreased libido before most doctors will suggest testosterone therapy.

New Approaches For Testosterone Deficiency Treatment

Although TRT is an effective treatment for testosterone deficiency, some reports have reported a new treatment approach based on the use of testosterone deficiency models that consider the mechanism of testosterone action on erectile function. PDE-5 inhibitors are the first choice for ED patients, but they are not always effective in patients with testosterone deficiencies . One of the reasons for the lack of efficacy might be the PDE-5 expression changes induced by testosterone. A combination therapy involving both testosterone and PDE-5 inhibitors is one choice, but it is the one that is being vigorously debated, with strong reasons being presented for and against its use. PDE-5 inhibitors are also effective, but regardless of their pharmacokinetics or the regimen used, none has been shown to cure ED .

Fukuhara et al. showed that resveratrol and vardenafil improved erectile responses in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes . Recently, Dalaklioglu et al. also reported that resveratrol improved sildenafil-induced corpus cavernosum relaxation in both diabetic and nondiabetic aged rats, probably by potentiating NOS activity . Oral supplementation might improve the vasculogenic condition, considering our previous study, though this is just speculation and needs to be examined.

What Are The Signs Of Ed

ED can start with softer or less frequent erections. Most men may experience erections that dont last long enough to have quality sex while other men are unable to achieve an erection at all.

Aside from these noticeable experiences, the most common sign of ED is the lack of morning erections. If youre unable to have satisfying sex for any of these reasons, you may have ED. If youre experiencing low sex drive or premature ejaculation, you may consider talking with our providers about low testosterone or consider one of the PE treatments above. Our providers can go over those conditions during your first visit.

Like many physical issues that come with age, erections are one of those conditions on the list to look after for men to watch closely. While it is normal for work and life to get in the way of sex, its important for men to be mindful when stress, anxiety financial, or relationship issues decrease their desire for sex and impact their erections.

Unhappy sex life or loss of intimacy with partners can lead to serious issues and unwanted relationship strains.

The Link Between Low T And Ed

Can Testosterone Shots Cause ED?

Erections depend on testosterone, but the relationship between the two is complex and not fully understood. Some men have healthy erections despite testosterone levels well below the normal range.

What is clear is that low testosterone levels are linked to a number of the same chronic conditions that play a role in erectile dysfunction, such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.

Penis Size Is Determined During Fetal Development

Whilst those with normal T levels cant change the size of their penis, it does appear that low testosterone levels could be a factor in under-development of your reproductive organ.

Hypogonadism is otherwise referred to as low T. It is characterized by having testosterone levels of lower than 300 ng.dL.

And you are affected by testosterone even when you are in the womb. It helps to regulate organ growth and even helps decide which gender youll be.

There is research to suggest that having a smaller-than-normal penis may be linked to low testosterone during fetal development.

A study published in the Journal of Pediatrics found that when a group of infants suffering from a condition called micropenis were given testosterone supplementation, they were able to develop normally into adulthood.

So if you give specific steroids to children it can prevent smaller-than-average penis development. But again though, give male-enhancing supplements to those with normal development and youll se no benefits.

Key Point: Testosterone wont change the size of your penis. It is determined with genetics and during early fetal development.

What Does Testosterone Do

Testosterone is a hormone produced in the testicles that plays a significant role in male sexual development. It also helps to maintain:

  • Bone density
  • The production of red blood cells
  • Sex drive
  • Sperm production

As men get older, their testosterone levels naturally go into gradual decline, which can cause some symptoms. One of the signs of lowered testosterone is reduced sex drive and sexual function.

What Is The Main Cause Of Erectile Dysfunction

Mental issues like PTSD, TBIs, depression, anxiety, and relationship issues are also possible causes of erectile dysfunction. Reference, Reference

There is a clear connection between low testosterone levels and the chronic conditions listed above that play a role in erectile dysfunction.

Normal testosterone levels are not required for normal erections to occur but sex drive plays an important role at the starting line of an erection. A common complaint in men diagnosed with low testosterone is that they frequently talk about low sex drive.
