If you look around your surroundings on any given day, most likely you notice a majority of people are focused only on their cell phone people walking across city streets couples in restaurants not interacting with each other but in fact looking at their phones parents not being present with their children but instead looking on the Internet.

While technology has done wonders for accessibility and instant information, cell phone usage has limited our social interactions and connections with others. But at what point does cell phone usage become a dependence or even an addiction?

Although not yet classified as a disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition , the universal diagnostic tool for psychiatrics in the United States, researchers have compared cell phone addiction to other forms of behavior and substance abuse addiction.

The following symptoms on are thought to comprise a list of criteria of cell phone addiction if it was included in the DSM-5:

  • Persistent failed attempts to use cell phone less often.
  • Preoccupationwith smartphone use.
  • Need for newest cell phone, more applications, or increased use.
  • Withdrawal, when cell phone or network is unreachable.
  • Signs of Smartphone Abuse or Dependence

How Much Melatonin Should You Take

The right dose of melatonin for you is the lowest possible dose that can help you sleep with minimal side effects, Dimitriu says. This can vary by individual.

General advice: For most people, a melatonin dose of 0.5 to 5 mg can effectively help them fall asleep. If you find this dose isn’t effective, you can increase it from there under the guidance of your doctor.

Melatonin should only be used occasionally unless you have otherwise been instructed by a physician, Avena says. Melatonin is considered safe in low doses for short-term use, but there is little data available on its long-term effects and more research is needed to determine overall safety.

If you find you are relying on melatonin in order to fall asleep every night, Avena recommends lowering your dosage slowly. You may experience a few nights of less than great sleep as your body adjusts.

Relaxation techniques like meditation or breathing exercises can help you fall asleep without the help of a melatonin supplement.

“It is more important to have healthy sleep habits and a regular sleep schedule, exercise, and minimal stress, than to rely on any supplement, including melatonin for sleep,” Dimitru says.

How Much Melatonin Should A Person Take

Although melatonin is naturally made by the body, its still important to use care with supplements. Too little melatonin wont produce the desired sedating effect, and too much can cause unwanted effects, including interfering even more with your sleep cycle. The trick is to take the lowest effective dose, since taking a surplus of melatonin wont help you sleep better.

In fact, some researchers believe it might not be so much the dosage, as the timing of administration, that affects its efficacy.

A typical starting dose of melatonin can range from 0.2 to 5 mg. This is a broad range, so its better to start off with a small dose, and slowly work up to the dose thats effective for you. For general insomnia in adults, a standard dose can range from 0.3 to 10 mg. In older adults, the dose is between 0.1 and 5mg.

Many commercial preparations of melatonin contain the supplement in much higher doses. Based on the research, these higher doses just arent necessary. Melatonin is a hormone, and its best to take as low a dose as possible that is still effective.

Young children should avoid taking melatonin unless directed by their doctor. Women who are pregnant and those who are breastfeeding should not take melatonin until they ask their doctor about whether its safe to do so.

Can You Overdose On Melatonin And Die

Health experts believe that sleep with a supplementation and not by natural ways is always a bad idea and not proper. Most of the people who use Melatonin supplements take it to sleep at desired time and have a relaxed sleep. Melatonin is not known to cause death but there are instances when people share horrible experiences regarding Melatonin. There are however very less examples when people tell they almost died due to addiction of Melatonin supplements. An extremely high amount of Melatonin for a very long period of time is dangerous. It may cause several severe health issues.

    Melatonin And Other Drugs

Is melatonin safe? In small doses, for short periods, the answer to that question is yes. However, even though melatonin isnt a prescription medication, its best to treat it as one. Why? Because melatonin can interact with other drugs and cause potential health problems or unpleasant side effects you dont want to experience.

Though the Food and Drug Administration regulates supplements to some degree, they are not subject to the same scrutiny a medication would be. Each supplement brand may provide a different dose or contain various ingredients and fillers. There is also scant research about melatonins reaction with other medications, drugs and alcohol. Because so much remains unknown about melatonin, its crucial to talk with your doctor before you begin taking it. A health professional can review your current and past medical history and spot any potential problems that may arise if you take a melatonin supplement. They can also advise you on the correct dose to take, as well as how long to take it.

As Melatonin Use Rises So Do Safety Concerns

Nov. 12, 2018 — Isabel Wazny had tried everything to get to sleep.

A lifelong night owl whose sleeplessness worsened as she aged, she sipped chamomile tea, popped antihistamines, and listened to relaxation tapes before bed — all to no avail. Some days sheâd call in sick to work, afraid she couldnât drive safely. After she retired, she started staying up all night.

âThereâs no one to talk to at 3 a.m., and when you sleep all day, itâs hard on your social life. I was getting really depressed,â says Wazny, 63, who lives in British Columbia. When she asked her doctor for sleeping pills, she recommended melatonin instead. Today, her life has turned around.

âI have never had such a regular pattern of sleep in all my adult life,â she says. âI wish I had known about this 30 years ago.â

Wazny is among a growing number of sleep-deprived consumers turning to a once-little-known hormone, often referred to as the âsleep hormone,â for relief for themselves and their families.

In all, U.S. consumers are expected to spend more than $425 million on melatonin supplements in 2018, up from $259 million in 2012, according to Nutrition Business Journal. More than 3 million adults and close to a half-million children take it, and that number is expected to grow as more sleep-deprived families clamor for cheap ânaturalâ remedies and companies roll out everything from melatonin teas to mouth sprays to animal-shaped gummies.

Is It Dangerous To Combine Sleeping Pills And Alcohol

    Suboxone withdrawal,melatonin helps

Yes, sleeping pills and alcohol are a dangerous combination. As both have sedating effects, it can cause a person to stop breathing, which may lead to death when taken in high amounts. Most sleeping pills have a precautionary label not to take alcohol while using it, and this should be followed strictly.

Symptoms And Effects Of Sleeping Pill Addiction

In most cases, sleeping pills are prescribed for short-term use. Sleeping pills are typically used for severe cases of insomnia and other disorders. Sleeping pills are fast-acting and should be used when needed.

However, individuals might start to take sleeping pills whenever they have trouble sleeping. Some people also use sleeping pills to cope with anxiety and stress. Using sleeping pills for anything other than what they were prescribed for is considered misuse.

Melatonin Supplements Arent Subject To Safety Standards

Because melatonin is licensed as a natural health product, companies are not subject to the same manufacturing scrutiny when making melatonin supplements as they are when producing pharmaceuticals. That means you dont have any reassurance that the package of 3 mg melatonin pills you picked up actually contains 3 mg doses. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine in January looked at 31 products and found that 71 percent of them actually contained doses that were more than 10 percent off what was stated, and 26 percent contained unlabelled serotonin, which is not authorized for sale as a supplement.

Yes You Can Overdose On Melatonin

Low doses of melatonin cause relatively few side effects, but it is possible to take too much, says Nicole Avena, PhD, an assistant professor of neuroscience at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

Melatonin supplements are not regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration and therefore have no standardized dose. The typical dosage found in stores ranges from about one to five mg but can be found in doses as high as 10 mg.

Overdosing on melatonin can lead to side effects, including:

    • Daytime sleepiness
    • Dizziness

Can You Become Addicted To Melatonin

Can you get addicted to melatonin tablets, can you get ...

Just because something is natural doesnt make it automatically safe. While there are no reports of melatonin being addictive as of this writing, when taking medications or supplements, its always good to be aware of the potential effects of the substance.

Melatonin doesnt cause withdrawal or symptoms of dependence, unlike other sleep medications. It also doesnt cause a sleep hangover, and you dont build up a tolerance to it. In other words, it doesnt cause you to need more and more as time goes on, which is a hallmark of addiction. These characteristics make it unlikely that melatonin is addicting. More long-term research needs to be done on melatonin and the effects of long-term use, however.

If you or a family member have a history of addiction, talk with your doctor about your use of melatonin and any concerns you might have. It might not be right for everyone.

Symptoms To Watch For In Melatonin Use

Too much melatonin is counterproductive since it produces the opposite effect to its intended purpose. Using too much could make sleeping more difficult since it could disrupt your circadian rhythms. Overdosing could also cause you to feel groggy during the day and cause you to experience vivid dreams or nightmares.

Aside from feeling the side effects mentioned above, you could also develop joint pain and feelings of anxiety from too much melatonin. Furthermore, if you take medications that lower your blood pressure, like calcium channel blockers or beta-blockers, you might also see lower effectivity from the supplement.

Be sure to speak with your doctor about the specific combination of supplements and medications you use. Sometimes, taking a supplement for lower levels is not the most advisable way to get more sleep, especially if you take medicine for other chronic ailments.

Melatonin is a sleep supplement that helps the body realign its sleep cycle and follow natural circadian rhythms. Since it is a hormone that the body produces, people think of melatonin supplements as a safer alternative to sleeping pills. As with anything you take for health, it is best to consult your doctor before taking this sleep aid.

How Much And How Often A Baby Should Sleep

Depending on the exact age of your baby, they should be sleeping for around 16 hours each day. Obviously, this event isnt a straight 16 hours, as they only sleep for 3 to 4 hours at one time. At this age, babies are not expected to sleep fully through the night as they will want to wake up to eat at least one time.

The amount of melatonin for babies depends on the age, weight, medical conditions, and symptoms the baby is experiencing. Your babys pediatrician will consider all of these factors, and then prescribe or suggest an amount that will be safe and effective for your baby.

Just like with every other medication or supplement, you have to be very careful to follow the correct dosage, as an overdose might result in serious harm to your baby. A pediatrician should always determine the amount of melatonin that helps babies sleep.
