If theres one thing to pick to do for your acne, start using Differin gel at bedtime. Wash with a gentle cleanser, dry, and apply a pea size of Differin onto the entire face.
Keep Your Hats And Headbands Clean
Another common culprit of forehead acne specifically? Hats, as well as headbands and headscarves that rest on the top of your forehead. Think about it: If you wear a hat for an entire afternoon, that’s hours worth of sweat, makeup, oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria buildup trapped on your skin. Getting acne this way isnt just common. It even has its own name: acne mechanica.
Acne mechanica can be caused by hats, helmets, straps, visors, headbands, and especially masks, Dr. Rubin says. Yep, maskne mask acne is a type of acne mechanica. Any item that is touching the skin for a continuous period of time can cause acne mechanica.
This doesn’t mean you should stop wearing hats and headbands, not to mention masks, of coursebut if you are experiencing a lot of forehead acne, make sure to regularly take off these accessories and give your skin a break. Also, be sure to wash them. You can throw most headbands right into the wash, or you can hand-clean the inside of hats with warm water and hand or dish soap. And for non-cloth masks, be sure to swap them out with fresh ones semi-often.
Manage Your Stress And Get Enough Sleep
The side effects of too much stress and not enough sleep most definitely include acne. Increased stress and lack of sleep is a recipe for disaster when it comes to healthy skin, Dr. Mullans says. These can lead to negative behaviors, including poor eating and drinking habits. When your body is rested and hydrated, your skin will reflect how you feel.
That being said, obviously becoming “less stressed” is easier said than done. Nonetheless, dermatologists advise to do whatever you can to bring some relaxation into your life and lower stress, whether that be by listening to music, taking a bubble bath, exercising, or heading to bed earlier.

Skip Makeup When You’re Working Out
Take an extra five minutes before hopping on the treadmill to completely wash your face and remove your makeup to minimize the risk of breakouts. “Sweat is released through visible pores in the skin,” says dermatologist Dr. Janelle Vega. “When makeup covers those pores, that barrier doesn’t allow the sweat to make it to the surface of the skin, which can lead to clogged pores. The trapped debris and bacteria are a perfect breeding ground for acne bumps and zits.”

Even though Im the co-founder of a skin-care start-up, I too deal with acne. Ive always had pimples here and there, but on the day of my 30th birthday I woke up to cystic, painful acne along my jawline. Its been clockwork ever since. Every month, I get inflammatory acne on my chin that also leaves behind marks. My skin concerns changed from reducing fine lines and brown spots to also battling hormonal acne.

What Are The Steps In A Diy Skincare Routine
There are usually two parts of a regimen morning and evening skincare routines with specific steps for each time.3 Its important to apply acne treatment products as directed whether its morning, evening, or both to be effective.
While different skin types require different products, the order of application also is important for the acne skincare routine to be effective.
Morning Skincare Routine
Generally, in the morning, the skin care steps offer protection:
1. Cleanser Gel-based or bar cleansers are generally better for oily skin, whereas cream-based products benefit normal to dry complexions. Washing gently helps prepare your skin for the other products to be effective. Rinse with warm, not hot, water.
2. Toner Can lessen redness and dryness.
3. Serum Use a product that contains niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, and retinol to improve texture.
4. Moisturizer Hydrates with a formula best suited to specific skin type oily skin benefits from oil-free or gel products with humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid.
5. Acne spot treatment Apply on active breakouts on top of the pimple. Benzoyl peroxide to kill bacteria and salicylic acid to exfoliate and dry oil glands are most common.

What Is The Best Topical Treatment For Women With Hormonal Acne
The same as for teen acne adult acne treatment should be personalized to the skin type and acne and acne severity type. The best topical ingredient for mild hormonal acne is salicylic acid, retinol, niacinamide, and benzoyl peroxide for moderate acne. Benzoyl peroxide is regarded by the American Academy of Dermatology as the best FDA-approved single anti-acne ingredient. It is frequently more effective than any other over-the-counter prescription acne medication. Unlike adapalene , they are often very irritating new preparation of micronized benzoyl peroxide 2.5% can be used on acne-prone and sensitive skin without significant side effects.
The best cleansers for women with hormonal acne include a low percentage of salicylic acid. Salicylic acid at a concentration of 0.5% can help unclog the skin pores without over-drying the skin. Plant-based ingredients can further help fight skin inflammation and reduce the dryness and redness frequently associated with regular anti-acne cleansers.
Choosing the right moisturizer is crucial for women with hormonal acne. Anti-wrinkle moisturizers can increase the risk of acne breakouts. For best results, look for moisturizers oil-free and specially formulated for acne or acne-prone skin people. Women with normal – oily skin can benefit from an active moisturizer with niacinamide, and women with drier skin can befit from a more hydrating moisturizer.

Ive Barely Experienced A Spot Since
I followed the routine to the letter for a year and a half and Im deliriously happy to report that Ive barely experienced a single spot since. Thats no exaggeration either, not even a monthly rom-com-worthy one. While no two peoples skin ailments or cure-alls are ever likely to be the same, my experience does prove the worth of a good dermatologist. If your skin quirks lack rhyme or reason and theyre getting you down, book in an appointment. If hormonal acne is your bugbear, ask your doctor about a prescription azelaic acid cream. Moral of the story? Professional advice is priceless.
Dos And Dont For Acne
- Do not use a harsh face wash that makes your skin over dry: I see a lot of patients who first use harsh face wash and then put a cream to moisturise. Well, thats a disaster for acne-prone skin. Instead, use a face wash that removes excess oils from skin, so that skin feels soft and supple, rather than dry or stretched.
- Do not wash face again and again: If your skin secrets oil even after using strong face wash, then you need a retinoid-based product to control your oils.
- Do not layer products: Avoid over-layering of skincare products because they will clog your pores.

Piling On The Trendy Products
Teens tend to turn to their favorite influencer and start putting what I call the kitchen sink approach on their face, Gohara said, and that can stoke the acne fire. Acne breakouts can take five days to disappear, so its important for teens to stick to a basic routine and give their skin time to heal, she said.
Apply An Acne Treatment Medication
If you chose to use a simple cleanser in step 1, here’s your chance to spot treat with the more powerful stuff. After washing, let your skin dry pat gently with a soft towel rather than rubbing and then try an over-the-counter treatment, such as CeraVe Salicylic Acid Acne Treatment Gel or La Roche Posay Dual Action Acne Treatment. It can take an over-the-counter treatment at least six weeks to work, the experts say at that point, if you’re still not seeing any results, you should consult with a dermatologist, who can prescribe a stronger medication, such as Dapsone gel. Dr. Love offers this savvy advice: “If you live in an area where there’s a three-month wait to see a dermatologist, make the appointment as soon as you start the over-the-counter drugstore topicals as a backup plan,” she suggests. “You can always cancel if you don’t need it!

When Should Prescription Treatments Be Added To Over
Adherence to a strong regimen can go a long way to keeping skin clear, but factors such as genetics, hormones or environment can still trigger outbreaks or more serious problems. Or, the side effects of the OTC products such as dryness, irritation or inflammation, cause some to discontinue use.4
Sometimes even the most targeted products arent sufficient to treat the acne breakout, especially if three months of use hasnt produced results. In those cases, its necessary to consult a dermatologist or other healthcare professional.
In cases of back acne where it can be difficult to apply topical treatments, oral medications can be more effective. As an example, in adults with more severe cases that include subcutaneous cysts, the topicals might not be sufficient. While retinol can have positive effects, the OTC options usually contain between 0.25 and 1.5 percent retinol to work on both the outer layer of the skin as well as penetrate the middle layer. A stronger formula prescription retinoid could be more effective but needs physician supervision.
Some dermatologists dont recommend OTC products because clinical research on effectiveness can be limited as are scientifically objective results of the additive benefits thus they opt for other treatments. It can be beneficial to use an antibiotic and/or an anti-inflammatory medication for more severe acne or when other products have shown no results with extended use.

Comprised of astringent-mimicking white willow bark extract, vitamin C-rich beetroot extract and antioxidant-packed pomegranate extract, soothing aloe vera and purifying kaolin clay, this top-rated mask polishes your skin while boosting its radiance, evenness and smoothness.
Use Sunscreen That Doesn’t Clog Pores
While SPF is a must, some sunscreens can trigger breakouts. You want to look for oil-free and non-comedogenic formulas that won’t clog pores, says Dr. Karen Hammerman, MD, from Schweiger Dermatology. Options from brands like Elta MD and Peter Thomas Roth, which are recommended by the pros, are specifically tested on acne-prone skin so you can get your dose of SPF without having to worry about clogged pores.
With some acne-treating products, though, youll need to go a level above a strong SPF. If you are using a retinol or retinol-derivative treatment, or any ingredients that make your skin more sensitive, avoid sun exposure, Dr. Dendy Engelman, MD, FACMS, FAAD, said.

Use The Right Face Cleanser
Buying a generic face wash wont necessarily improve your complexion. For a cleanser to be most effective, you have to pay attention to your skins needs and pick the ingredients accordingly. If your skin tends to be oily, choose products with salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or glycolic acid Dr. Tina Alster, MD, FAAD, a celebrity dermatologist and founding director of Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery, recommends a glycolic gel. For sensitive skin, look for gentle cleansers with lactic acid or hydrating ingredients like glycerin, which arent as drying as those made for oilier types. A cream-based cleanser, Dr. Alster says, is a solid, gentle pick that wont strip your skin of moisture.
My Clear Skin Journey: Here Are The Exact Steps I Took To Clear My Hormonal Acne
Our beauty editor shares her personal story.
My skin loved being pregnant, but around sixth months postpartum, it took a turn for the worse. While Ive dealt with mild forehead breakouts off and on since college, I never had acne or breakouts on my jaw and cheekuntil this past year. On top of that, I am generally on top of my skincare game. I never ever go to bed without washing my faceI can count on one hand the times I havent washed my face before bed in my entire life. I eat a clean and nourishing diet, use organic high-powered skincare, and put a lot of effort into supporting my health holistically.
Although it seemed like my skin should be okay, I was still dealing with hormonal acne, and my current routine wasnt working.
While Im obsessed with skincare, I dont love the idea that you have a lineup of 20 serums to get good results. In my quest to calm my skin, I had carts filled with hundreds of dollars worth of skincare, ready to pull the trigger to do whatever I could to clear my skin up. Thankfully, I took a breather and remembered that theres more to skin health than just throwing products at it. Skin is a reflection of your internal health and while yes, Ive found new products that have supported my skins health along the way, there were some major non-product-related steps that were crucial when figuring out how to clear up hormonal acne.
Scroll on for what Ive learned, both internally and topically with products.
