What Is Gelatanised Maca
Gelatinisation happens when the maca is heated on a low heat, allowing the roots to separate from its fibrous parts. Most of the nutrients are maintained during this process. Gelatinisation essentially removes the starchy carbohydrates, creating a high concentration of beneficial nutrients. It contains a higher ratio of nutrients than raw maca.

Maca Root Blocks Estrogen
DIM is a well knowns and studied estrogen blocker. While I am personally against supplementing with DIM supplements due to the unnatural levels it will put in your body, it is still extremely effective in its natural form.
Maca root is actually a cruciferous vegetable and absolutely loaded with DIM in its natural state.
How Does Maca Actually Work For Hormones
Its a bit of a mystery. The important thing here seems to be that maca doesnt actually infuse your body with hormones. So its not like I am short on oestrogen, lets get some oestrogen etc. Adding hormones to the body in that way might be like robbing Peter to pay Paul causing more imbalance in the long term.
Maca, however, is said to do have the rather incredible knack of creating balance finding out exactly what your body needs and then helping it to achieve that in a balanced, natural way. So if the hormones are out of balance it will kick start the system so that it can produce them itself. A sort of magical little friend looking at the whole picture in a balanced way and giving the system a nice bit of homeostasis.
OK, I am not being particularly scientific here . I am more of a folk medicine, traditional, trust in the energy of the land sort of woman. I also trust in the native people of Peru who have embraced this plant root for millennia .

Where To Get Your Maca Root Powder From For You Maca Smoothie For Hormone Balance
Your health is important, so be sure to buy
It might be tempting to cut corners and go for inferior products for convenience, but its not worth it. You would probably only use between a teaspoon and tablespoon every day. Therefore a 500g packet could last you up to three months. A small price to pay for such healthful properties.
I only recommend products that I have used, tried and tested myself. The following two companies both have excellent ethical standards and Ive been in touch with them personally. Here are my suggestions
UK and Europe My favourite company in the UK is Sevenhills Wholefoods. They sell the maca that I use almost all of the time. Sevenhills are very much in contact with their farmers, and are proud of the direct-supply line they have established, with ethics, fairtrade, organic and sustainability as priorities. Their price is very good value.

North America My favourite brand the USA is now Terrasoul. I was looking for an alternative to the Sevenhills one that I use, for my mother who lives out there. The grown it with small family-owned, organic farms high in the Peruvian Andes and selectively harvest their roots. Ive used this when I visit the USA and love it

Should I Take Maca Root Powder Or Capsules
Personally I dont believe it really matters if you take maca in powder form or capsules. What really matters is the concentration of maca, the dosage and of course the quality of the maca in the product.
There are actually different types of maca including: red, yellow and gold maca and gelatinized maca, and each of these have different concentrations. Well be covering each of these different types of maca in a future article.
The form of maca to take depends on lifestyle. For most people, the capsule form is most convenient and an easy way to get a concentrated dose very quickly. Maca powder on the other hand is more flexible and can be taken by itself or mixed in with a smoothie. It has a light nutty taste and blends very well with other foods. I personally like to blend maca powder into a smoothie with fruits, yogurt and other foods. Heres a simple recipe:
How Maca Works In Your Body
All adaptogens work on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which is responsible for helping the body manage stress, according to a 2019 study published in Pharmaceuticals. The researchers suggest that the root helps regulate the stress hormone cortisol.
Cortisoltoo high or too lowaffects all of our other hormones, including estrogen and progesterone in women, Vitti says. By influencing cortisol output, maca helps the body produce the right amount of other hormones, too.
In fact, one study published in International Journal of Biomedical Sciences shows that maca root helps modulate the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian axis, which is responsible for controlling and balancing the reproductive hormones in people with ovaries.

- Unexplained weight gain
We also believe it helps with low energy, brain fog, mood swings, and low mood, she adds.

Types Of Hormone Imbalances
Estrogen Dominance Estrogen dominance is a quite common cause of hormone imbalance that occurs when estrogen levels are too high relative to progesterone levels. This can happen in a few ways:
Symptoms of estrogen dominance include: Tender breasts, irregular cycles long or short, bloating, acne, breast cysts, PMS, headaches, anxiety, weight gain, difficulty sleeping, fatigue, hair loss, and difficulties getting pregnant. However, this is not an all-inclusive list.
The graphic above shows a healthy pattern and 3 patterns of estrogen dominance. Please take note that all of the unhealthy patterns are still within a typical lab reference range. Your hormones will come back normal. Its the ratio between the hormones that are important! Adding a healthy pattern to the previously mentioned reasons for Estrogen Dominance leaves us with the following patterns for your hormones.
Finding The Perfect Maca For You
Magdalena asked me to talk about, the right maca for womens hormone health. But before I talk about that, lets discuss the importance of you buying only a quality pure and safe product.
So what does quality maca look like?
First, only buy organic Peruvian maca, and I suggest you also look for organic certification on the label. I purchase only certified organic maca for Mighty Maca Plus. You also want your organic maca to be from Peru versus somewhere else, as that will also ensure it is GMO-free The Peruvian government currently bans GMO in maca harvests.
I think Magdalena has talked about this previously, but a lot of maca is now coming out of other countries, including a good deal coming from China.
The problem with maca from other countries can be with the unregulated growing methods. You wont see much in the way of organic or non-GMO, and the growing practices may include a variety of endocrine disrupting fertilizers and pesticides. There are also a lot of pollutants in general in China in the air and water sources.
You can purchase color-specific maca, which is harvested from mixed crop fields and is usually hand-sorted. But I dont personally feel that is the optimal strategy. The maca fields in Peru are typically planted with multiple phenotypes. Due to the windy conditions, cross-contamination is common. The maca I purchase for Mighty Maca Plus is naturally harvested from organic farms, to include all phenotypes of the roots.

Try Macait Fixes Everything
Well, maybe not everythingbut it is packed with nutrients and so much more.
I first came across maca on a trip to Peru. I was on a healing journey of sorts, traveling the globe, trying to find natural yet proven solutions to my own hormone nightmaregoing into premature menopause at the age of 39 due to a personal trauma. Everywhere I went in Peru the locals said to Try maca to address my own issue, and it seemed to be the answer to pretty much any other health concern! Digestion got you down? Try maca! Fertility challenges? Try maca! Sexual dysfunction problems? Try maca. Stressed and fatigued? Try maca.
And I did try maca. And let me just say I was pregnant by the time I returned home from my trip.
Peruvian maca is grown locally in the high elevations of the Andes, in extremely harsh conditions and temperatures. Throughout the centuries, the maca plant has had to adapt in order to survive these challenging growing conditions and environmental stressors.
Today, Peruvian maca is considered to be an adaptogen. What does that mean? Well, an adaptogen is a natural substance that is considered to help the body adapt to stress by exerting a normalizing effect upon bodily processes.
When we consume adaptogens we can benefit from their innate ability to withstand stressors. Their nutrients and chemical makeup help our bodys adrenals deal more effectively with environmental, mental and physical stressors. This then helps our entire body get back into balance.
Herbs To Balance Your Hormones
Nowadays, a high percentage of women may experience hormonal imbalances, from PMS to menopause associated symptoms. In recent years, people have started to talk more rigorously about this topic: period pain, symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome, etc. Now we know that the period should not hurt and that if it does it is very possible that we have an excess of estrogens in our body or an imbalance between progesterone and estrogens, for example. We also know that diet and lifestyle significantly influence our hormonal system, therefore, although each case is particular and should be individually addresses, the strong drop in estrogen that women suffer during menopause and all the related can be supported by introducing more phytoestrogens into our diet .
Some of the symptoms that can show a hormonal imbalance are:
- Irregular menstrual cycles
- Mood swings, irritability, anxiety, depression, stress
- Unexplained weight changes
Here are 5 herbs that help to balance your hormones:
2. Red Raspberry Leaf
3. Vitex Or
4. Milk Thistle

- Healthy fats
Omega-6 is often linked to unhealthy fats, namely trans and ultra-processed fats. Even so, consumed in its proper measure and combined with omega-3 in a specific proportion, it can bring us great benefits. The correct ratio should be between 1: 1 and 4: 1 of omega-6 and 3 respectively. The problem is that most diets have more omega-6s than omega-3s.
The Easiest Way To Get Nutrients For Natural Hormone Balance:
Maca root, myoinositol, and choline are three nutrients that have helped me, and many of my patients, maintain a healthy natural hormone balance.
In fact, Ive seen these three nutrients work so well together I decided to formulate all three into a single, easy-to-take supplement called Hormone Helper.
Hormone Helper is an all-natural supplement that helps balance your hormones so you can look and feel great, every day of the year.
It includes a doctor-formulated blend of these three hormone-balancing nutrients:
- Maca Root Can help lower cortisol levels and relieve fatigue, cramps, PMS symptoms, and low sex drive.
- Myoinositol A natural compound that successfully lowered high testosterone levels in a group of female volunteers in a double-blind trial.
- Choline Better known as vitamin B12, this essential nutrient supports healthy thyroid function, reduces stress, and boosts metabolism.
Best of all, it only takes 30 seconds to mix a scoop of Hormone Helper into a glass of water first thing in the morning.
Its an easy way to promote healthier hormones if you, like me, are busy with a lot of things going on in your life.
Theres nothing else like Hormone Helperavailable today. I love the way it makes me feel and I think youll love it, too.

Why Maca Makes Some Women Feel Sick
Some women find that maca causes unpleasant side effects including stomach bloating, cramps, nausea and also heart palpitations or the jitters. These side effects may occur partly because your maca is:
Get Your Thyroid Levels Checked Periodically When Using Maca
If you are on thyroid hormone replacement medication and are taking maca, you should periodically have your thyroid levels checked. Given macas ability to help balance hormones, you may discover that you need less medication to treat your hypothyroidism, as Viana explains:
“I can’t even count the number of women with hypothyroidism who have contacted me to say that they have lowered their dose of thyroid medication or even were able to stop it all together after taking our Royal Maca. I always counsel our customers to have periodic thyroid tests because they often see a significant change for the better to thyroid function. This benefit of healthier thyroid levels, although frequently evident on the first thyroid test after starting Royal Maca, has often improved further with each thyroid test for as long as nine months after starting.”
As An Adaptogen Maca Helps Your Body Deal With Stress And Hormone Imbalances
Probably in response to surviving its own harsh growing environment, Peruvian maca has been shown to have adaptogenic properties.
What does maca being an adaptogen mean for you? Well, for centuries it has been able to adapt, to resist disease and environmental stresses. The good news?
“Maca is able to pass along its adaptogenic properties to you as well! As an adrenal adaptogen, it nourishes and helps your body deal with chronic stress, including both mental and physical stressors. Additionally, it helps your body adapt to hormone imbalances, whether those be with your sex hormones, thyroid or elsewhere in your endocrine system.”
I use my Mighty Maca Plus superfoods drink in all of my womens restorative health programs for this reason!
The adrenals are typically my first focus in solving any number of health symptoms and conditions.
We know that stress and its effects on our adrenals can exacerbate hormone imbalances throughout our bodies, including impacting our thyroid health .
