    Should I Take Maca Root Powder Or Capsules

    Personally I dont believe it really matters if you take maca in powder form or capsules. What really matters is the concentration of maca, the dosage and of course the quality of the maca in the product.

    There are actually different types of maca including: red, yellow and gold maca and gelatinized maca, and each of these have different concentrations. Well be covering each of these different types of maca in a future article.

    The form of maca to take depends on lifestyle. For most people, the capsule form is most convenient and an easy way to get a concentrated dose very quickly. Maca powder on the other hand is more flexible and can be taken by itself or mixed in with a smoothie. It has a light nutty taste and blends very well with other foods. I personally like to blend maca powder into a smoothie with fruits, yogurt and other foods. Heres a simple recipe:

    Types Of Hormone Imbalances

    Estrogen Dominance Estrogen dominance is a quite common cause of hormone imbalance that occurs when estrogen levels are too high relative to progesterone levels. This can happen in a few ways:

  • Elevated estrogen levels: Estrogen levels can become elevated due to environmental exposures, medications, poor hormone metabolism, or ovarian cysts/tumors.
  • Depressed progesterone levels: Progesterone levels may depress due to various conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome , menopause, or hypothyroidism.
  • Combination: Any pattern in between the that causes higher estrogen relative to progesterone can also result in estrogen dominance
  • Symptoms of estrogen dominance include: Tender breasts, irregular cycles long or short, bloating, acne, breast cysts, PMS, headaches, anxiety, weight gain, difficulty sleeping, fatigue, hair loss, and difficulties getting pregnant. However, this is not an all-inclusive list.

    The graphic above shows a healthy pattern and 3 patterns of estrogen dominance. Please take note that all of the unhealthy patterns are still within a typical lab reference range. Your hormones will come back normal. Its the ratio between the hormones that are important! Adding a healthy pattern to the previously mentioned reasons for Estrogen Dominance leaves us with the following patterns for your hormones.

  • Healthy Pattern: Levels of Estrogen and Progesterone are at optimal levels. Estrogen and Progesterone are balanced

    Magdalena asked me to talk about, the right maca for womens hormone health. But before I talk about that, lets discuss the importance of you buying only a quality pure and safe product.

    So what does quality maca look like?

    First, only buy organic Peruvian maca, and I suggest you also look for organic certification on the label. I purchase only certified organic maca for Mighty Maca Plus. You also want your organic maca to be from Peru versus somewhere else, as that will also ensure it is GMO-free The Peruvian government currently bans GMO in maca harvests.

    I think Magdalena has talked about this previously, but a lot of maca is now coming out of other countries, including a good deal coming from China.

    The problem with maca from other countries can be with the unregulated growing methods.     You can purchase color-specific maca, which is harvested from mixed crop fields and is usually hand-sorted. But I dont personally feel that is the optimal strategy. The maca fields in Peru are typically planted with multiple phenotypes. Due to the windy conditions, cross-contamination is common. The maca I purchase for Mighty Maca Plus is naturally harvested from organic farms, to include all phenotypes of the roots.

    Why Maca Makes Some Women Feel Sick

    Some women find that maca causes unpleasant side effects including stomach bloating, cramps, nausea and also heart palpitations or the jitters. These side effects may occur partly because your maca is:

  • Not pure: Macas popularity as a superfood has led to a massive output of powders and other supplements. Some companies, in trying to get a piece of the action, have put out maca products that are mixed with other starches or incipients that can cause digestive upset for some people. They may also be contaminated with molds or other impurities. Additionally, other countries have jumped on the bandwagon and started producing maca outside Peru. China has been growing their maca crop in the Yunnan province, an area struggling with pollution problems. This means that maca from China may be impure due to exposure to pesticides, chemical contaminants , and solvents used during the manufacturing process. Some Chinese maca crops have been genetically modified which means they are not the same as the traditional maca grown in the Peruvian highlands.
