Eating For Hormone Balance
I gain weight way too easily , so Im strategic with my food plan. I eat foods that stabilize my blood sugar and dont cause high cortisol if youre intolerant like me that includes amping up fiber and avoiding gluten. I choose foods and drinks that are high in nutrient density, with broad diversity of species so that my microbiome is happy. I have hypothyroidism, or a slow thyroid, so I try my best to avoid raw goitrogens like cruciferous vegetables and soy. I still eat broccoli, kale, collards, cauliflower, etc. but I lightly steam them to inactivate most of the goitrogens. I like tempeh, a fermented form of whole soy, but chose the types that are not combined with grains. Youll find a lot of fermented vegetables on my meal plan because they are natures probiotic and help you reset your insulin so that you dont store fat at your belly and raise your blood sugar unnecessarily. I eat low-mercury, wild-caught fish almost daily because it keeps my fatty acids in balance. I have a gene called PPARG that keeps my weight down if I eat more fish than meat, so youll find a lot of salmon, halibut, cod, and steelhead trout on the menu.
Most of all, I eat portions that are right for my body, because Im a recovering food addict who gains weight if I eat unmeasured food. In the spirit of transparency, Ive included the measurements of all of my food.
What You Can Eat
The main foods to eat on the Hormone Reset Diet include primarily whole foods with the exception of the food groups that are eliminated during each specific phase. The foods the diet includes and the phases of the diet are determined by the results of a quiz that claims to determine which hormonal imbalances you may have.
Cons Of The Hormone Reset Diet
There are more disadvantages and risks than benefits to the Hormone Reset Diet, despite the creator’s medical credentials.
If you have an actual hormonal condition that requires treatment from a medical professional, this diet likely will not help you. As well, your condition could worsen if you arent receiving treatment. Speak to your doctor before trying the Hormone Reset Diet, especially if you have or suspect you may have hormonal health issues.

Is The Hormone Reset Diet A Healthy Choice For You
Although the Hormone Reset Diet focuses on whole, nutritious foods, it also excludes many foods of high nutritional value. For example, the Hormone Reset Diet excludes grains. Dietary Guidelines for Americans, published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, recommends an average of 6 to 8 ounces of grains per day, depending on your caloric needs.
Similarly, the Dietary Guidelines recommend around 2 cups of fruit and 3 cups of dairy per day, while the Hormone Reset Diet eliminates these foods. On the Hormone Reset Diet, you are restricted to 99 grams of carbohydrates or less per day the USDA recommends at least 130 grams of carbohydrates per day.
Following the diet will restrict you to approximately 1,000 to 1,200 calories per day in order to lose weight. This calorie goal is well below the level recommended by the USDA, which depends on your sex, age, and activity level.
Where the Hormone Reset Diet shines is the recommendation to consume plenty of vegetables. Many people do not meet the recommended amounts of vegetables. The USDA recommends the approximate following intake of vegetables each week:
- 1.5 to 2 cups of leafy greens
- 5.5 to 6 cups of red and orange vegetables
- 1.5 to 2 cups of beans, peas, and lentils
- 5 to 6 cups of starchy vegetables
- 4 to 5 cups of other vegetables
Is The Hormone Reset Diet A Good Option For You
There is never a lack of diet and fitness trends claiming to hold the key to simple, long-term weight loss. The ketogenic diet , the carnivore diet , and intermittent fasting . are some of the most recent prominent diet fads. On the other hand, the hormone reset diet claims to restore peoples malfunctioning hormones.
Sara Gottfried, MD, a gynaecologist, developed the hormone reset diet to help people lose weight by resetting their metabolic hormones. Its primary focus is hormone variations that can negatively affect a persons weight, and it also looks at other factors that can lead to obesity and other chronic disorders.
The hormone reset diet is a 21-days, three-step program that combines diet, exercise, nutritional supplements, and cleansing to promote hormonal balance and a healthier body. The diet controls what you eat and when to eat to get the most out of your hormones.

Getting To Know Ghrelin
You can think of ghrelin as your hunger hormone. Like leptin, it communicates with the brain in this case, telling your brain to eat. Every time your stomach becomes empty, it naturally releases ghrelin into your bloodstream. Ghrelin levels are lowest just after youve finished a meal. Theyre at their highest when the stomach is empty and youre ready for your next meal. This scenario is normal when a person is healthy and maintaining optimal weight.
An overweight person, on the other hand, will find that like the other hormones weve explored ghrelin levels are typically out of whack. In healthy individuals, ghrelin levels decrease in a way that satiates them and signals their brains to stop eating. But in obese individuals, ghrelin levels dont decrease enough after eating, which fails to send the brain the signal it needs to stop eating and feel satisfied.
Does A Smoothie Drink Allow For Great Nutrient Absorption Compared To Food That Is Chewed
It seems that smoothies do allow for greater nutrient absorption because blending the fruit and vegetables helps to release more nutrients than just chewing them. If you dont like eating greens , adding them to smoothies are a great way of incorporating them into your diet.On the other hand, one of the advantages of chewing your food is that it takes longer to eat, especially if you chew completely, giving your brain enough time to receive the message that you are full.

The Mechanism Of A Hormone Reset Diet
Phase one starts by detoxifying the body by eliminating numerous dietary groups. These foods include gluten, cow dairy, various oils, peanuts, sugar, artificial sweeteners, red meat, citrus, alcohol, and caffeine. Throughout this phase, you must also take anti-inflammatory foods and supplements such as omega fatty acids and probiotics.
In phase two, youll reintroduce various foods while monitoring your bodys reaction to each one. This phase is still limiting, requiring you to avoid hormone-disrupting foods. These items include fish with high mercury levels, non-organic meat and coffee, dried fruit such as raisins and dates, peanuts, and high fructose corn syrup. Processed foods, artificial sweeteners, nitrates, and refined grains are also off-limits during this time.
Phase three includes more physical activity, such as cardiovascular and strength training, while maintaining the same diet as phase two.
Order Wild Salmon Instead Of A Burger
Red meat has been shown to increase your estrogen level and affect the estrobolome, the part of your microbiome that controls estrogen levels. Paleo recently has been shown to stall in weight loss efforts for women: many women cannot get to a body mass index of 23 or lower. Salmon offers instead a bonanza of blood sugar-stabilizing high-quality protein, nutrients, and healthy omega-3 fatty acids. If youre not eating wild-caught fish three or four times a week, human intervention trials show supplementing with omega-3s can also help reduce visceral fat. How To Get Cortisol Under Control
Tips for maintaining healthy, balanced cortisol levels include the following:
- Consider what relaxes you. Is it meditation? A walk in the park? A bubble bath? Engaging in a creative project? Find what relieves stress for you, and integrate it into your daily routine.
- Exercise regularly, and give yoga a try if its not already part of your workout regimen. The synchronized breathwork that accompanies a nice, flowing vinyasa routine calms the nervous system and reduces cortisol all while giving your body and mind a thorough workout.
- Listen to your favorite music. A 2011 study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology found that patients who listened to instrumental music during surgery had lower cortisol levels than a control group.
- Get enough sleep at night. Have you ever noticed how easily stressed and anxious you become on days when youre sleep deprived? This happens because during a night of deep, restorative sleep, your body is working to balance all hormones, including cortisol. A study published in the peer-reviewed journal Aviation, Space, and Environmental Medicine explored how sleep deprivation impacted helicopter pilots on a 7-day emergency medical duty. Findings suggested it was sleep deprivation not the act of emergency medical care that elevated adrenaline and cortisol levels.
Is It A Good Choice For You
Choosing healthy, whole foods for most of your diet is brilliant for overall health and weight loss. On the other hand, excluding food groups such as dairy, few fruits, and grains is unnecessary for weight loss and may harm your health and long-term weight loss success.
According to the National Health Service, to reduce weight, one must stick to a diet that restricts you to 1,000 to 1,200 calories daily. This calorie goal is far below the suggested limit, which varies depending on your gender, age, and degree of activity.
Weight loss should occur at one to two pounds per week, emphasising a mix of food adjustments and activity. The hormone reset diet claims to help people lose 12 pounds in two weeks, which is far faster than what is considered safe and sustainable. Furthermore, because the activity component incorporates phase three, the weight loss in phase one is attributed solely to food changes.
Much weight loss during the first phase is most likely attributable to water weight. However, it is not a long-term weight loss solution, and it is likely to reappear after the initial period or when you resume your regular eating habits.
Become A Dna Whisperer
Scientific breakthroughs in the past decade have shown us that about 80% of your risk of disease comes from how you eat, move, think, and supplement only about 20% is genetics. One of the best ways to love up your DNA is to get adequate methylationa biochemical process in the body that occurs when a compound called a methyl group binds to a gene and changes the way it expresses itselfmethylation is involved in DNA silencing. Frequently, I get asked what supplements I take daily, and an important one that whispers loving commands to your DNA and improves your thyroid function is a multivitamin with 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. If youre female, make sure your multivitamin contains 5-methyltetrahydrofolate.

Im A Doctor Heres What I Eat On A Typical Day
Im a board-certified gynecologist who practices functional medicine for women but Im also a regular gal busy working mom, constant chauffeur for my daughters, devoted wife, and spiritual seeker. I help women balance their hormones naturally, starting with their fork. I know that good food needs to be easy and convenient, or its unlikely to happen. Making wise food choices used to be a daily challenge for me, but it gets easier with practice and viewing food preparation as a sadhana or spiritual practice.
I believe anyone can change the way they eat, making adjustments that provide healing. Often your body sends you sacred messages that your food plan needs to change. Perhaps binges, breakouts, or bloating are plaguing you. I have a food first philosophy and passionately believe that food is the small hinge that swings the biggest doors when it comes to your health.
Heres what a typical day looks like on my food plan. I like to keep my routine as regular as possible, so that theres time for the love and grace to seep in. My day begins at 6 a.m. and ends at 10 p.m., and I pay attention natural rhythms like my circadian clock and Ayurvedic dosha tendencies .
The Hormone Reset Diet By Dr Sara Gottfried
While calories count, hormones count more.
Its one of the cornerstones of the Bulletproof Diet
And bringing misfiring hormones back into balance just might be the most powerful biohack for everything from your waistline to your energy and even your lifespan.
After all, just a handful of hormones regulate your body shape, your metabolism, your appetite and your cravings in a way that no amount of calorie cutting can possibly compete with.
Its a lesson I learned the hard way after getting my first hormone panel from an anti-aging doctor in my late 20s
Because seeing those lab results in black-and-white, it suddenly made sense why years of dieting and hours every week in the gym just werent cutting it:
If youre a guy approaching 30 with the testosterone of a 50-year-old and the estrogen of a middle-aged woman no amount of spinach and kale or time on the treadmill will give you a six-pack.
And women tend to have it even worse
When you combine higher sensitivity to stress, naturally lower testosterone and ugly cultural body-shaming trends with conventional weight loss and exercise wisdom
Its no wonder that about 80 percent of women in America are on some kind of diet even as obesity rates continue to climb.
So whats the solution?
Few doctors have put as much research into solving this problem for good as Dr. Sara Gottfried

How To Go Sugar Free In 3 Days
Lets start with an insulin reset! Remember, the seventy- two- hour reset is a simple way to take care of the chronic symptoms that plague you, especially fat gain. Each cycle takes a mere three days to reverse and reset your bodys hormone receptors. Of course, the Hormone Reset is a twenty-one-day program, so as you focus on each reset and tune into the changes that reset brings, youll achieve the full benets of the program by continuing each reset for the balance of the twenty-one days. The Sugar Free reset is one crucial piece of the puzzle.
My clinical experience has taught me that resetting your insulin is the single most important action you can take to lose excess fat. Perhaps you have been trying to lose weight for years, or even decades, leading you to feel hopeless, stuck, and desperate. You are not alone.
You need to cut the sugar. This includes all the usual suspects, such as cakes, cookies, muffins, and soda. If you think you can simply switch to another sweet, addictive substance, sorry again. No sugar includes sugar substitutes too, with the exception of stevia. Scrutinize labels because sugar lurks in the most unsuspected places and hides under various names. Look for grams of sugar. With this reset, youll be aiming for no more than 15 grams per day, 10 less than the 25 grams per day currently recommended for women by the American Heart Association.
