For moms around the world, handing their kids an orange when theyre sick with a cold is pretty much standard though as it turns out, the touted ability of oranges and vitamin C to cure the sniffles after theyve started may be mostly a myth, according to GoodRx. But the vitamin C lurking inside an orange may be good for your acne. Vitamin C is especially good for skin health, with antioxidant properties and the potential to fight against free radical damage, as well as reduce discoloration, and promote the growth of collagen . For acne specifically, its vitamin Cs anti-inflammatory effects, which help to reduce the visible damage caused by the skin condition, that put it ahead of the pack, WebMD says.

Its worth bearing in mind that oranges are not the only fruit that contains vitamin C its also abundant in cantaloupe, kiwis, guavas, and even blackcurrants, according to Healthline. If you want the best results, however, its advisable to get yourself a vitamin C serum, as topical application of the vitamin appears to have the best results for the reduction of acne symptoms. Keep in mind, though, that if you have sensitive skin already, applying products containing L-ascorbic acid might cause further irritation.

The antioxidant vitamin E helps skin heal from damage and scarring caused by acne. Its not easy to get a lot of E from a low-fat diet, but unrefined vegetable oils, nuts, and whole grains are good sources. Aim for: The recommended daily intake of vitamin E is 15 milligrams. One tablespoon of canola oil has 2 mg, and 30 g of almonds has 7 mg. Some physicians recommend 200 mg or more per day, which youd need a supplement to get.

Helpful hint: Vitamin E is fat soluble, so eat it along with foods that contain a little fat. When you eat kale or spinach, for example, drizzle on a little olive oil.

Try A Prescription Oral Medication

If OTC treatments or prescription topicals arent doing the trick, ask your dermatologist about oral medications. Especially if you have deeper, painful cystic acne, topicals may need to be supplemented by oral medication. One option that Dr. Zeichner and Dr. Garshick recommend is spironolactone, an oral blood pressure medication that helps lower oil productionand secretion. Spironolactone can take up to three months to show effects, but many hormonal acne sufferers swear by it.

There are also several oral contraceptives that are also FDA-approved to treat hormonal acne and are sometimes prescribed in conjunction with spironolactone. They work by regulating your hormones and decreasing testosterone, which can reduce hormone-fueled breakouts. Yaz, Beyaz, Ortho Tri-Cyclen and Estrostep are the four pills that are FDA-approved to treat acne, but most of the combination oral contraceptive pills are useful, says Dr. Zeichner. You can talk to your dermatologist or gynecologist about getting a prescription.

An earlier study published in 2007 showed similar resultsâAustralian researchers found that young men between the ages of 15 and 25 with mild-to-moderate acne experienced dramatic improvement when they switched from eating the typical American diet to a healthier diet of whole grains, lean meat, and fruits and vegetables.

âThe acne of the boys on the higher-protein, low-glycemic index diet improved dramatically,â said senior author Neil Mann, associate professor at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia, âby more than 50 percent, which is more than what you see with topical acne solutions.

Some people have long believed that diet affects acne, but only recently have researchers started to find evidence that this is true. If youâd like to try changing your eating habits to enjoy clearer skin, weâd encourage you to try it.you have nothing to lose!

Hormonal Acne Diet Plan

As noted above, a comprehensive review of the literature in 2004 concluded that there was no conclusive evidence on the effects of diet on acne.7 Has there been any progress since that time? Another review in 2005,10 restated that, within the dermatology community, a consensus had emerged that diet was unrelated to the etiology of acne. That review summarized the few poorly designed studies, more than 30 years old, which contain very little objective data. In general, those studies were inconclusive due to methodological limitations: small sample size, lack of appropriate controls, potential recall bias, incomplete reported results or failure to clearly define the changes in acne.56,57

Interestingly, that review mentioned that there should be a link between diet and acne as many dietary factors influence a variety of hormones and growth factors that influence sebaceous gland biology and production of sebum. At the end of the article there was a statement that there have not been any recent studies to explore the relationship of diet and acne.

These studies failed to support a link between the consumption of chocolate or sugar and acne. Thus, no evidence exists on the role of diet in acne.

To help keep hormones balanced & skin clear, Dr. Zenovia recommends incorporating the following foods into your daily diet:

Probiotics: Probiotics are live cultures of good bacteria. They can be found in certain foods or taken in pill form as a supplement. Probiotics help restore a healthy balance in the gut, reduce inflammation, help balance hormones, and improve overall skin health.

Healthy Fats:Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids are the building blocks of our skins cell membranes. Our bodies dont make these essential fatty acids on their own- we can only get them from the foods we consume. Essential fatty acids help produce the skins natural oil barrier and help regulate acne-causing hormones including testosterone and androgen.

Mediterranean-Style Foods:A Mediterranean diet is rich in vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, legumes, potatoes, whole grains, herbs, spices, fish, seafood, and extra virgin olive oil. This diet helps reduce inflammation in the body, stabilize the skins oil production, and contains foods with a naturally low score on the glycemic index.

Foods To Avoid When You Have Hormonal Acne Along With The Reasons Why

Lets jump on.

Cows milk dairy products contain A1 Casein, a protein known to interact with our hormones by increasing insulin growth factor 1 . This is a problem for your skin because it can increase the levels of the acne-causing male hormone testosterone.

Some people can also be very reactive to dairy proteins like casein and the inflammation thats triggered makes the testosterone receptors in the skin hypersensitive.

This causes normal testosterone levels to have an excessive effect on the skin, just as if there was too much testosterone and hormonal acne results.

Dairy is found in most ice creams, cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream and yogurt unless otherwise stated.

To pinpoint if dairy is an acne trigger for you, stop eating it as much as possible for about 6-8 weeks. This is a long enough time to notice a difference.

Some people find that goats or sheeps milk and cheese doesnt have the same effect, but they still contain lactose, another tricky molecule for some peoples digestion!

Gluten is a protein found in the grains wheat, rye, barley and spelt and foods made from the flours of these grains. For some people, gluten causes an increase in inflammation in the body when its eaten because it causes what we refer to as a leaky gut.

The most common gluten foods are bread, pasta, breakfast cereals, take-out hot chips, baked goods and pastries.

Some great ideas for gluten-free grain swaps include quinoa, brown rice, and buckwheat to name a few!

  • Processed sugar

Can Nutrients Affect Acne

However it is very obvious that Hippocrates ancient but very wise statement should hold some truth when applied to acne, given that the most efficacious current therapies for acne are retinoids. Oral administration of isotretinoin or topical application of its isomer and natural retinoid, tretinoin, are used as anti acne therapies, 13-cis-retinoic acid is the only drug that targets all four pathogenic factors of acne and is the most efficient in sebum suppression. 13-cis-RA is a retinoid that could derive from the metabolism of Vitamin A. Although several websites proclaim that it is found in small quantities naturally in the body without citing a reference, we know that at least the natural isomers of retinoic acid also affect the disease. With that in mind, we can certainly predict an association between diet and acne.

Vitamin A plays an essential role in skins health. Vitamin A deficiency causes abnormal visual adaptation to darkness but also dramatically affects the cutaneous biology as dry skin, dry hair and broken fingernails are among the first manifestations of vitamin A deficiency. This nutrient, which is stored in the liver, is found also in the skin, particularly in the sebaceous glands, known to express retinoid receptors., Lets also not forget that most dermatologists are influenced by nutritional studies to recommend ingestion of isotretinoin with fatty foods. Retinol , carotenoids and retinoids are absorbed better with parallel intake of vegetable oils.

The Best Foods For Hormonal Acne

The ultimate list of foods that cause acne

This soup contains some of the best foods for fighting hormonal acne! One of the reasons why I love this borscht soup recipe is because it is so good for fighting hormonal acne and heres why:

  • Beets help circulate blood flow and provide a healthy source of iron, two major factors when it comes to fighting off hormonal acne
  • Cabbage contains Indole-3-Carbinol, a compound needed to help flush out excess estrogen from the body. This helps to regulate hormones and avoid a surge in androgens.
  • Chickpeas are a good source of phytoestrogens, which help to remove xenoestrogens from the body. Xenoestrogens can contribute to hormonal acne as they can be a culprit when it comes to hormonal disruption and imbalance.
  • Coconut oil is anti-inflammatory, supports healthy hormones and contains lauric acid which helps support the immune system
  • Garlic has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Garlic contains allicin, which helps to reduce acne swelling and inflammation.
  • Dill is wonderful for the liver as it contains a high amount of antioxidants. Your liver plays an important role in filtering out excess hormones which could be causing hormonal acne.

If you like soups, you might want to save these ones for later!

How To Treat And Manage Hormonal Acne According To A Skin Expert

Hormonal acne is one of the topics that, without fail, continues to pop up in Go-Tos DMs.

Its not surprising. Hormonal acne is a notoriously tricky, and oftentimes very frustrating, skin condition to treat. Its also very common! With that in mind, weve tapped skin wizard and owner of Skin Essentials, Dr. Imaan Joshi to help explain all things hormonal acne and hopefully simplify your skin journey at the same time.

Why Dairy Is Bad For Hormonal Acne

Consuming dairy can also make it difficult to sustain a low-inflammatory diet. Dairy, especially cow milk-based dairy, is very inflammatory, as is whey protein, which is found in cow milk. Its important to know that whey is often used as a protein source in power bars and protein shakes. In our practice, we commonly meet patients with new, onset acne who have recently started drinking whey protein shakes. Like with gluten, the inflammatory nature of whey can stimulate acne flareups.

We recommend replacing whey protein with plant-based protein when using it in shakes and other meal recipes. Plant-based proteins are an excellent alternative to whey for a hormonal acne diet as they provide equal amounts of protein and will not induce acne or inflammation. Some of our favorite brands of plant protein are Aloha and Vega, both of which taste delicious! We do say its always better to get protein and nutrition from actual food rather than powdered drinks, but if for your lifestyle or diet requires you to utilize protein powders, we recommend trying one of these brands.

The Science Behind Hormonal Breakouts

For 16 years of my life, hormonal acne was a constant battle. After living with problem skin, I realized that food played a huge part in my hormonal acne story.

Here is a short explanation of how it works.

When certain trigger foods are consumed, they send signals to our glands to create hormones . If there is an excess of these hormones produced, they signal the oil glands in our skin to start creating sebum .

The bad news: Bacteria love sebum, and together, they create the painful and frustrating acne cycle we have all come to hate.

The good news:All-natural skincarecan help eliminate the bad bacteria and save your skin from the acne cycle . Here are four foods to avoid if youre dealing with hormonal acne! Youre welcome in advance!

Why Do I Get Hormonal Acne

Anti-Acne Diet: What I Eat in a Day for Hormonal Acne

But, what are the main reasons for hormonal acne?

If you are experiencing cystic acne, anywhere on your face, and it gets worse around mid-cycle its likely due to high androgen levels .

High testosterone levels can be due to blood sugar imbalances or insulin resistance, while high DHEA levels can be driven by stress.

If you are experiencing jawline acne that shows up a week or two before your period its likely due to imbalances in estrogen and progesterone, or estrogen dominance.

Estrogen dominance doesnt simply mean high estrogen .

There are several patterns of estrogen dominance:

  • high estrogen and normal progesterone

  • high estrogen and low progesterone

  • normal estrogen and low progesterone

  • normal estrogen and normal progesterone, but low progesterone to estrogen ratio

Acne can show up with any of these pictures of estrogen dominance.

The important question we need to be asking is: why is my acne showing up in the first place?

Hormone testing can help you uncover how your hormones are affecting your acne.

This is taking a root cause approach when it comes to understanding our health and hormones. When we answer this question, we are understanding what is driving the imbalance .

As always, Im giving away my best hormone tips here, answering your burning questions, and letting you in on the what the science says.
