How To Balance Your Hormones Naturally

Depending on your test results, symptoms and severity, you and your doctor can discuss the best option for you. For more extreme cases, medications or hormone replacement therapy could be an option. Its important to remember how complex our bodies are; treating one hormone or issue might affect another. You and your team of healthcare professionals can decide on the best possible care for YOU.

However, in some cases is possible to implement lifestyle changes to help hormone imbalance, which might be the first step before the aforementioned options are attempted. Here are a few key things to try to naturally balance hormones:

Risk Factors And Causes

Hormonal imbalances are multi-factorial disorders, meaning they are caused by a combination of factors such as your diet, medical history, genetics, stress levels and exposure to toxins from your environment.

Some of the major contributors to hormonal imbalances include:

  • Food allergies and gut issues: An expanding field of new research shows that your gut health plays a significant role in hormone regulation. If you have leaky gut syndrome or a lack of beneficial;probiotic;bacteria lining your intestinal wall, youre more susceptible to hormonal problems, including diabetes and obesity. Thats because inflammation usually stems from your gut and then impacts nearly every aspect of your health.
  • Being overweight or obese
  • High amounts of stress, and a lack of enough sleep and rest

Adrenal dysfunction is the largest cause of the hormonal imbalance with the sex hormones especially because of something called the cortisol steal.

This occurs when cholesterol, which usually helps to make the sex hormones, combines with too much stress and the enzyme 17/20 lyase blocks the conversion; the production of cortisol ensues. Cortisol then causes the imbalance of progesterone, estrogen and testosterone, which then decreases the sex drive.

None of the above can be temporary measures, but need to be a whole lifestyle change in order to keep hormone levels in balance. Take it from a recovering perfectionist, though baby steps are just fine!

Essential oils are plant extracts that have been processed to capture the fragrance that the plant produces. These oils can be used for a variety of things, but they are most commonly used in aromatherapy. Many people claim that essential oils can cure diseases, but the research is extremely limited, and results from human clinical trials are mixed.

I believe that the reason essential oils are used to aide hormone balance is due mostly to aromatherapy. Studies have been done on inhalation of essential oils such as lavender and rosemary finding that they decreased cortisol. As we’ve already established, high cortisol can be linked to other hormonal imbalances, so improving stress regulations and cortisol levels can be beneficial.

If you choose to use essential oils for any reason, make sure you are choosing good quality oils and avoid ingesting them. Much like supplements, essential oils are not regulated. Before purchasing and using, assess the quality, purity, and reputation of the oil and brand. Lastly, remember that natural does not always equal safe.

Avoid Sugar And Refined Carbs

Sugar and refined carbs have been linked to a number of health problems.

Indeed, avoiding or minimizing these foods may be instrumental in optimizing hormone function and avoiding obesity, diabetes and other diseases.

Decreased quality of sleep may also cause hormonal imbalances. Hormones such as cortisol, leptin, and ghrelin are been shown to be highly correlated with our sleep and circadian rhythm.

Here are a few tips to try to increase your quality of sleep as a way to help balance hormones:

  • Limit blue light exposure at night. Blue light has been shown to suppress melatonin up to 2x that of non-blue light. Avoid your phone ideally 2 hours before bed, wear blue light blocking glasses, and you can also increase your light exposure to bright lights during the day to help you sleep at night.
  • Get enough vitamin D. There may be an association between low vitamin D levels and poor quality of sleep. You can get vitamin D from the sunlight, vitamin D can be increase through intake of foods such as salmon, eggs or fortified foods, it can also be taken in supplement form if needed.
  • Create an exercise routine for better sleep. There is really a bi-directional relationship here, meaning one will help the other and vice versa. Exercise has a long standing of being tied to improved sleep, specifically moderate intensity exercise. On the flip side, when you’re rested you’re more likely to exercise because..well… you have energy! Win-win.

Balance Hormones With The Moon: Lunaception

This tip is for girls only. Womens menstrual cycles are wired to be in sync with the moon. In all early societies, before industrialism and processed foods disrupted traditional cultures, women ovulated at the full moon and menstruated at the new moon. This is our default setting, but factors including hormonal birth control, hormonal imbalances, and poot diet disrupt this pattern.

The key is to choose fats high in omega-3s and to limit saturated fats . Salmon, canned albacore tuna, walnuts, flaxseed, olive oil, avocados and chia seeds are high in omega-3 fatty acids.

“Salmon also stabilizes your hunger hormones and is high in vitamin D, which helps regulate female testosterone levels,” says Carrie Gabriel M.S., RDN, a dietitian and owner of Steps2Nutrition. “The good fats in fish improve overall hormonal communication.
