I have not met a parent who is eager to medicate their child. Such decisions are made with a lot of soul-searching, and frequently after unsuccessful attempts to address sleep problems via behavioral changes. Treatment options are limited. There are no FDA-approved insomnia medications for children except for chloral hydrate which is no longer available. Personally, I use melatonin for children commonly in my practice. It is very helpful for some children and families. I appreciate Dr. Kennaways concerns but I have seen first hand the consequences of poor sleep on children and families. I always investigate to make sure that I am not missing other causes of insomnia . My end goal is always to help a child sleep with a minimum of medications. I know that this is the goal of parents as well. Some children, especially those with autism of developmental issues, will not be able to sleep without medication. So, melatonin may be a good option for your child if:

  • Behavioral changes alone have been ineffective
  • Other medical causes of insomnia have been ruled out
  • Your physician thinks that melatonin is a safe option for your child and is willing to follow his or her insomnia over time

Is Melatonin Approved By The Fda

Melatonin is not approved by the FDA for any use. It falls under the FDAs Dietary Health and Education Act as a dietary supplement. Dietary supplements may include vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and herbs or botanicals, plus other substances used to supplement the diet. As with other dietary supplements, melatonin isn’t approved by the Food and Drug Administration for safety or effectiveness.

Manufacturers must notify FDA about new ingredients prior to marketing. After the supplement is on the market, the FDA will monitor adverse events that are reported to them by the manufacturer, consumers or health care professionals. If a manufacturer makes an unproven health claim or if the supplement is found to be unsafe the FDA can remove the OTC from the market.

Melatonin is a natural hormone produced by the body. It is recommended for short term purposes. All studies have not found a reason why it should not be used in the long term. However, as in other sleeping supplements, long term use is not recommended.

At low doses of 0.3 mg to 2 mg, the hormone can be used for periods of up to 9 months. However, dependency on the drug for us to get sleep should never be ruled out. This is a situation where we only get a good sleep if we take melatonin supplements.

An increase in doses especially for other causes of lack of sleep means that the medication should be taken for a lesser time. For doses up to 12 mg, melatonin is recommended for short term use. The recommended period is up to 4 weeks.

Melatonin is excellent for most sleep disorders where one cannot get to sleep well. However, in jet lag or work shift changes melatonin helps but not as effectively as in other sleeping disorders. It offers excellent results in delayed sleep phase syndrome, most cases of insomnia, and in other mental problems leading to lack/ loss of sleep.
