I have had too many women come to my clinic who have been told their thyroid function is normal, even though they have significant symptoms of an underactive thyroid. For these women, the best test to do is a thyroid hormone profile. This test measure TSH, free T3, free T4, reverse T3 and the thyroid auto-antibodies. It is not unusual for TSH to be within the normal range but an imbalance presenting in one of the other hormones or the thyroid auto-antibodies.

    Types Of Hormone Imbalances

    Estrogen Dominance Estrogen dominance is a quite common cause of hormone imbalance that occurs when estrogen levels are too high relative to progesterone levels. This can happen in a few ways:

  • Elevated estrogen levels: Estrogen levels can become elevated due to environmental exposures, medications, poor hormone metabolism, or ovarian cysts/tumors.
  • Depressed progesterone levels: Progesterone levels may depress due to various conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome , menopause, or hypothyroidism.

    It is also possible that females enter into a low androgen state as the body tries to compensate for the reduced estrogen levels and tries to convert more testosterone into estrogen. However, testosterone is also protective at the right level in females, especially for bone health.
