How To Find Out If You Have Low Testosterone

SIGNS YOU HAVE LOW TESTOSTERONE IN YOUR BODY (7 ways to find out)

Testosterone is involved in triggering the release of nitric oxide, a simple, yet important molecule that increases blood flow and expands blood vessels. When testosterone levels are low, you may experience problems getting or maintaining an erection. Testosterone replacement therapy can help reduce erectile dysfunction. Men who receive TRT generally report an overall improvement in sexual function and satisfaction.

What Is A Testosterone Levels Test

Testosterone is the main sex hormone in males. During a boy’s puberty, testosterone causes the growth of body hair, muscle development, and deepening of the voice. In adult men, it controls sex drive, maintains muscle mass, and helps make sperm. Women also have testosterone in their bodies, but in much smaller amounts.

This test measures the levels of testosterone in your blood. Most of the testosterone in the blood is attached to proteins. Testosterone that is not attached to a protein is called free testosterone. There are two main types of testosterone tests:

  • Total testosterone, which measures both attached and free testosterone.
  • Free testosterone, which measures just free testosterone. Free testosterone can give more information about certain medical conditions.

Testosterone levels that are too low or too high can cause health problems in both men and women.

Other names: serum testosterone, total testosterone, free testosterone, bioavailable testosterone

When To See A Doctor

A doctor may prescribe testosterone replacement therapy if a person displays a number of symptoms.

Low testosterone does not always present symptoms, and some people only learn about it after a routine physical examination with bloodwork.

However, anyone who experiences one or more of the symptoms listed above should seek medical attention.

To diagnose low testosterone, a doctor will often perform a physical evaluation and review the personâs symptoms. The doctor may also request testing to look for additional signs.

For example, a bone density test can show diminished bone mass, one result of low testosterone.

What Is Testosterone And Why Does It Decline

Testosterone is a hormone. It’s what puts hair on a man’s chest. It’s the force behind their sex drive.

During puberty, testosterone helps build men’s muscles, deepens their voice, and boosts the size of their penis and testes. In adulthood, it keeps men’s muscles and bones strong and maintains their interest in sex. In short, it’s what makes a man a man .

After age 30, most men begin to experience a gradual decline in testosterone. A decrease in sex drive sometimes accompanies the drop in testosterone, leading many men to mistakenly believe that their loss of interest in sex is simply due to getting older.

“Some say it’s just a part of aging, but that’s a misconception,” says Jason Hedges, MD, PhD, a urologist at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. A gradual decline in testosterone can’t explain a near-total lack of interest in sex, for example. And for Hedges’ patients who are in their 20s, 30s, and early 40s and having erectile problems, other health problems may be a bigger issue than aging.

“A lot of the symptoms are mirrored by other medical problems,” Hedges says. “And for a long time, we were not attributing them to low testosterone, but to diabetes, depression, high blood pressure, and coronary artery disease. But awareness and appreciation of low testosterone has risen. We recognize now that low testosterone may be at the root of problems.”

“The blood test is really the thing,” Mezitis says.

What Do The Results Mean

How to find out if you have normal or high testosterone levels

Results mean different things depending on whether you are a man, woman, or boy.

For men:

  • High T levels may mean a tumor in the testicles or adrenal glands. Adrenal glands are located above the kidneys and help control heart rate, blood pressure, and other bodily functions.
  • Low T levels may mean a genetic or chronic disease, or a problem with the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland is a small organ in the brain that controls many functions, including growth and fertility.

For women:

For boys:

  • High T levels may mean cancer in the testicles or adrenal glands.
  • Low T levels in boys may mean there is some other problem with the testicles, including an injury.

If your results are not normal, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have a medical condition needing treatment. Certain medicines, as well as alcoholism, can affect your results. If you have questions about your results, talk to your health care provider.

The only way to discover if the blame is tied to Low T is a blood test for hypogonadism, which is the result of Low T.

When my blood test results for Low T arrived at my doctor’s office, I was called in immediately. Her opening statement was “you must feel just awful!” She then shared the numbers my condition was the worst she had ever seen.

What Are The Signs Of Low Testosterone

When I was 26, I was off-kilter, head to toe. I couldnt think, I couldnt move without pain, and I had body fat that wouldnt budge despite doing everything by the book. When I was ready to figure out why my body didnt work, I went to anti-aging doctor for a complete workup.

After some testing, I found that that my testosterone levels were lower than my post-menopausal moms, and thats why I couldnt lose weight and felt so tired and achy all the time. My free testosterone was low, and what I did have was bound to sex hormone binding globulin , which means your cells cant use it and its on its way out of the body.

On top of that, I have the gene that predisposes me to converting everything to estrogen, so the free testosterone I did have was converting to estrogen quickly. I had a lot of extra weight and man boobs, and since fat cells make estrogen, my estrogen levels compounded over time.

A lot of people with low testosterone might know they feel like garbage, but wouldnt even think the symptoms call for a trip to the doctor. If youre tired, you think you need to go to bed earlier. If youre achy, you suspect its part of getting older. If you do end up making an appointment, the doctor may or may not think to test your testosterone levels if you have just a few low-level signs of low testosterone.

You may not have any noticeable symptoms, you may have one or two, or you could check off the whole list. Here are some of the symptoms of low testosterone.

A Note About Free Testosterone

Correcting Common Posture Deviations Shoulder Elevation ...

When we are testing for and diagnosing someone with low testosterone, it is always our goal to find what it the optimal or normal range for their individual needs, goals and lifestyle. As you can see from the charts above, even a respected testing lab such as LabCorp can say that for a 60 year old man, a level of 6.6 pg/mL of free testosterone can be normal, and yet our doctors know that we see patients in that range that feel far from normal. Over the years of treating a variety of men between the ages of 35 and 65 with the symptoms of low testosterone, our doctors have discovered what we believe to be the optimal and not necessarily the normal level of free testosterone in the blood. We strive to get most patients regardless of age into a range of from 20 25 pg/mL, and find that most men can enjoy a great quality of life, free from the symptoms of low testosterone at that level.

Most of the testosterone in your bloodstream is what is known as bound testosterone, and a smaller percentage exists in the blood stream as free testosterone.
