Does Birth Control Help With Hormonal Acne
In many cases, birth control may be prescribed to help with hormonal acne. Dr. Stigall told us that birth control and other androgen blocking medications, such as spironolactone, may be helpful in the treatment of hormonal acne.
Although, she also said, birth control is not a one size fits all treatment and may actually make hormonal acne worse. This is why it is important to visit an experienced dermatologist who can help create a personalized acne treatment plan for you.
How Can Acne Be Treated
Your pharmacist can recommend a gentle, soap-free face wash, which you can use with warm water twice a day. Be careful not to wash your skin too often since this may aggravate acne. If your skin still feels oily after washing it, your pharmacist can recommend an over-the-counter acne wash or cleanser.
If your acne is moderate or severe, your doctor can prescribe medicines, which may come in tablet form or as a cream.
It is important to remember that treating acne takes time often 1 to 2 months and that you dont stop treatment just because you dont see your acne getting better right away. If the acne doesnt improve after your first treatment, you can return to your pharmacist or doctor and ask if there is another treatment you can try.

Causes Of Chest Acne And Back Acne
Acne is thought to be related to the sensitivity of your sebaceous glands. These are glands that produce sebum, an oily substance that keeps the skin lubricated.
In people with acne, the sebaceous glands produce too much sebum. This excess sebum plugs the hair follicles in the skin and mixes with dead skin cells. Bacteria on the skin that is otherwise harmless can infect these plugged follicles and cause painful, pus-filled spots.
BreakoutsIf you have acne, youll probably live with spots most of the time simply because thats how your skin works. However, you might notice that certain things trigger worse breakouts, or cause particularly severe spots like nodules or cysts.
Breakouts of chest or back acne might be triggered if the skin in those areas is rubbed or put under pressure. One example would be wearing a backpack, or a bag with a strap that goes across your chest.
You might also have more severe acne on your back and chest because you treat these areas differently to your face. Because your back and chest can be harder to see and reach, and because they arent usually on display, its easy to end up neglecting the skin here.
How can you stop hormonal acne? One of the first steps is working on balancing your hormones, such as by eating a nourishing diet, managing stress and getting enough sleep.

How Fast Can You Fade Acne Scars
The length of time needed to fade acne scars depends on the type and severity, and the length of time youve had the scars. Generally, older scars are more difficult to treat than newer ones. However, it is important to wait until all acne lesions have fully healed before attempting treatment, as active pimples can be further irritated and inflamed.
Atrophic scars require professional procedures to treat, usually in multiple sessions spread out over weeks or months. Full results are typically achieved over a few months to 1 year, depending on their severity. Surgical procedures can get rid of them more quickly.
Hypertrophic scars require multiple procedures spread out over several months or a single surgical treatment to excise them.
PIH typically fades on its own within 324 months. With treatment, it fades in a few days to a few months, depending on how dark the hyperpigmentation is in comparison to your natural skin color and the treatment you use.

Your GP may refer you to a dermatologist if your acne is severe and they can help you decide which treatment is best for you.
What Causes Hormonal Acne
Dr. Stigall told us hormonal acne is generally driven by excess androgens.

Nothing Seemed To Help My Acne
Thats when I got serious and made an appointment with a dermatologist, who put me on topical and oral medications to treat what turned out to be hormonal acne, due to the fact that I had stopped taking birth control. Board-certified dermatologist Debra Wattenberg, MD, explains, Hormonal acne tends to develop post-teenage years and is commonly distributed along the jawline, neck, and cheeks. It often presents with cysts that are caused by fluctuations in hormones, specifically increases in androgens like testosterone.
Causes of hormonal acne, according to Dr. Wattenberg, founder of NY Skin RX, include irregular periods, discontinuation of birth control pills, and menopause. The cysts that develop from hormonal acne are deep and hard to treat, so Dr. Wattenberg commonly recommends antibiotics, birth control pills, and anti-androgens such as spironolactone , which dials down male hormone expression in the body.
Unfortunately, thats not the happy ending to the story. Although my acne slowly cleared up, it left behind scars, including hyperpigmentation and discoloration of the skin, which is usually caused by excessive picking at areas of irritation, popping pimples the wrong way , and picking at pimples as they are healing.

What Are The Signs Of An Acne Scar
The types of scarring seen in acne include keloids or hypertrophic scars, which appear as red, firm, raised papules , Shah says. Atrophic scars appear as depressed or sunken in areas, and may be larger, broad scars , or small pits scars.
Identifying an acne scar from other types of scars isnt too difficult, because an acne scar occurs in the spot where a pimple was.

Treatments That Dont Need A Prescription
If you have mild acne, your pharmacist can help you choose an acne wash or cleanser, a lotion or cream with ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid or glycolic acid that can treat the condition. Use these products right across the area where there is acne, not just on the individual spots. For example, if you have acne on your neck, you should wash your whole neck with the product. If these treatments make your skin feel irritated or dry, try using them less often.
Other treatments can help with mild acne, such as light microdermabrasion, chemical peels and light diathermy. They may need to be repeated regularly and are not suitable for people with severe acne.
The Cause Of Hormonal Acne
Changes in the body hormonal levels can cause acne which is why teenagers typically experience acne as they go through puberty.
In women, specifically, hormonal acne often occurs around the menstrual cycle. During menstruation, the hormonal levels in the body fluctuate, and due to this, the formation of acne is typical among many women.
Another cause for hormonal acne is specific issues like PCOS, menopause, and increased androgen levels. Menopause occurs most commonly when women reach the age of 45 and above. Every woman is different and some may experience it early and some much later. These hormonal changes in the body can be a contributing factor to acne.
Menopausal acne occurs because of a drop in estrogen levels and or an increase in androgen hormones like testosterone. Many women take hormone replacement therapies to help with menopausal symptoms, so they are still likely to experience hormonal acne. This is because HRTs use the hormone progestin to replace the estrogen and progesterone hormones in your body. Using this hormone may even be what causes acne in your body.
The rise or fall in hormones can cause excess sebum production that accumulates with dirt into the pores and causes acne and skin cells can also become clogged in the pores.

Start with chemical exfoliation. Gross says using a product that offers gentle chemical exfoliation is the first step in healing scars. We like his Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel it has a blend of alpha and beta hydroxy acids that exfoliates dead, darkened scar skin cells while stimulating collagen production. He also says to look for anti-inflammatory and skin brightening ingredients in your serums and, such as vitamin C, a skin-brightening antioxidant, and vitamin E, which regenerates skin cells and improves the texture.

Farber agrees, recommending SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic Serum, which has a high concentration of both antioxidants, as well as anti-aging ferulic acid. Chang says to look for topical treatments that contain retinoids, hydroquinone, and azelaic acid, which have all been proven to dramatically lighten dark marks and even melasma. Her favorite picks are the Murad Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum and Skinbetter AlphaRet Overnight Cream. A word of caution: hydroquinone, a skin-bleaching agent, should only be used under the care and supervision of a dermatologist, since it can potentially lighten healthy skin, too.
With hypertrophic scars, the reduction of collagen is key. Chang suggests treatment options that include silicone gel, steroid injections, and lasers. Gross agrees, saying that if the acne scar is both red and raised, an in-office laser such as the Vbeam laser is an exceptional way to reduce its appearance.
