In What Ways Can You Manage Estrogen

The best thing for you to do is manage your insulin levels. This sounds terribly elusive, I know, so here is what you can do!

Know the difference: normal hunger vs “hanger”

Normal hunger, or the desire to eat something every 3 to 5 hours after eating something healthy, is perfectly normal. In this state, blood sugar levels are lower, but not too low. Eat a snack or a small meal, and you’ll be good for a while! Keeping blood sugar and insulin in harmony keeps metabolism running well and is much less likely to store belly fat!

Feeling hangry, or the need to eat something because you’ve become shaky, extremely irritable or even lightheaded is a sign that your blood sugar levels have dropped too low. Usually, in the hangry state, people want to grab either a lot of food or something with lots of sugar to boost them back up. While this may be a quick fix, it sets your body up for another ride on a blood sugar roller coaster – causing blood sugar levels to plummet faster than what they would have if you ate a smaller amount or something with less sugar.

Cut out refined sugars

Sugar is a carbohydrate, and your body definitely needs carbs! Just eat the right kind of carbs. You don’t have to be a detective or read books to understand the difference between a good carb and a bad carb. Just eat foods that don’t require a factory to make them! It’s really that simple.

Understand How Insulin Impacts Weight

How To Get Rid Of Lower Belly Pooch

Insulin is one of the most important hormones when it comes to weight loss and weight gain. Made by the pancreas, insulin is responsible for storing blood sugar, or utilizing it, depending upon your bodys needs of the moment. After you eat a large meal, a substantial amount of insulin releases itself into the bloodstream. It also enters the bloodstream as needed throughout the day, ensuring that blood sugar levels remain stable.

Another key function of this essential hormone is fat storage. Insulin decides how much fat to store, and how much to convert for energy expenditure. Chronically high levels of insulin can lead to a condition known as insulin resistance, which is linked to an uptick in blood sugar as well as continued elevated insulin levels.

Preventing this insulin imbalance is crucial, as it leads to weight gain, and eventually type 2 diabetes. When insulin levels remain high over an extended period of time, obesity and metabolic syndrome are often the unfortunate outcome.

What Is The Best Exercise To Lose Belly Fat

Before you ask about the best exercises for a flat stomach, let’s get clear on why crunches and sit-ups alone not going to be the thing to help you lose belly fat. ‘While crunches will help strengthen your abdominals and core muscles, theyre not enough in isolation to burn calories,’ Luke Hughes, Origym PT says.

Instead, Hughes recommends a rounded bodyweight or free weights workout routine done at a higher intensity as the best exercise to lose belly fat. These sessions will help to burn calories and increase muscle mass, which will, in turn, tap into your body fat stores even within a limited time period.

Do note though, too much HIIT can elevate cortisol in your body, which could hinder how effectively you lose stomach fat . Aim for three to four sessions per week and make sure you’re allowing your body plenty of time and space to recover.

‘Burning calories through cardio exercise like this helps to burn belly fat, particularly when we operate at a calorie deficit,’ says Hughes. ‘Try adding star jumps and mountain climbers into your workouts.’

Sleep Your Way To Weight Loss

Finally, how much sleep are you getting at night? Is perimenopause robbing you of sleep by causing night sweats and making you wake up at odd hours of the night? Is your system still too wired at bedtime to get into sleep mode, or are you simply just not getting to bed early enough to get seven or eight hours of sleep?

A chronic sleep deficit whatever the cause can promote weight gain. This is because of the effects that sleep has on two hormones that regulate appetite. When you get enough sleep your body releases leptin, a hormone that controls appetite. Not enough sleep means a bigger release of ghrelin, a hormone that literally makes you crave junk food!

You may feel like you just have lousy self-discipline when in fact it’s your body chemistry that’s making it more difficult to eat healthy and to know when to stop. Whatever it takes, really try to make sure you get enough sleep at night.

Hormones And Body Fat

During menopause, your hormones get thrown out of whack. Your estrogen levels plummet, and body fat that used to settle around the hips, thighs, or butt now tends to settle around your middle.

In menopause, your progesterone also decreases, which contributes to elevated cortisol levels in the body. Elevated cortisol can cause you to gain that so-called menopause belly.

An evaluation with an endocrinologist can help determine if a hormonal condition is the underlying cause of weight gain. Declining estrogen, adrenal disorders, hormonal resistance, thyroid imbalance, and several other hormonal imbalances can lead to weight gain. Laboratory tests give endocrinologists insight to hormonal imbalances when combined with your symptoms and presentation, but it doesnt always tell the whole story. Blood and urine results can be influenced by many things. For this reason, we suggest special evaluations to see how metabolic information relates to the lab data.

What Is Hormonal Imbalance

Hormones are basically chemical messengers, telling the cells in your body what to do and supporting them in doing it. The human body secretes some 50 or so different hormones, each of which has a specific purpose in the body. Most of us know that hormones are responsible for most sex-related processes, but they also help control many more basic bodily processes, including metabolism.

Hormonal imbalance occurs when you have too much or too little of a certain hormone. Since your hormones all talk to each other constantly, an imbalance in one hormone has a domino effect, causing changes in the entire body and taking a toll on your health. One downside of the stunningly complex interplay between hormones is that its fairly easy for things to get thrown out of whack.

Hormones are produced by the glands of the endocrine system. While any of these hormones produced by any of these glands could potentially get out of balance, certain types of hormones are usually involved when we talk about hormonal imbalance. The three major hormonal systems typically involved in hormonal imbalance are sex hormones , adrenal hormones , and thyroid hormones .

Because hormones and their functions are so diverse, the signs of hormonal imbalance are equally varied. However, some of the more common signs and symptoms of hormonal imbalance are:

  • Irregular period or amenorrhea
  • Weight loss or gain

Why Your Stress Is Causing Hormonal Belly Fat

Your hormones are your bodys chemical messengers, sending instructions from one area to another, to direct metabolic functions. Hormones instruct the organs of the endocrine system such as your thyroid and adrenal glands to release more hormones in a complex symphony of metabolic balance. This is why, when one hormone or hormone-producing organ goes awry, it can inhibit the whole process, and since metabolism is directly linked to your bodys ability to use food for fuel, this can send your fat-burning ability into a tailspin. But when it comes to belly fat and visceral fat in particular, after years of studying and clinical experience I have seen one hormone imbalance that is most often to blame: cortisol.

Cortisol is your bodys primary stress hormone. Its released by your adrenal glands and rises or falls throughout the day, according to your energy needs. It typically starts out high in the morning to help wake you up, and slowly tapers off throughout the day. Your sleepy time hormone, melatonin, is inversely proportional to cortisol, starting off low in the morning and increasing in the evening to help you fall asleep. Cortisol imbalances are common and can quickly throw off this natural daily rhythm, so that cortisol is high when it should be low, low when it should be high, or always low, or always high.

Hormonal Belly Fat: What You Need To Know

HOW TO LOSE BELLY FAT WOMEN | Reduce belly fat in perimenopause and menopause

When I set out to write The Belly Burn Plan, I wanted to not only explain how hormones can cause fat storage in different parts of the body, but also give readers the tools to lose the fat through effective meal plans and workouts. The combination worked. In the years since the book published I’ve helped all four body types: apple, pear, hourglass and inverted pyramid.

The apple-shape body, though, is the most critical to address.

Why? The apple-shape person stores most of their belly fat through the midsection. The type of fat that affects the belly area is called visceral fat. Visceral fat is hormonally active, and places unwanted stress on vital organs, like the heart, kidneys, spleen and liver.

Don’t get me wrong, anyone can store belly fat. Hormonal belly fat, on the other hand, is typically the type of fat that women refer to throughout their peri-menopausal or menopausal years.

One of the easiest ways to control hormonal belly fat is to know which hormones are the key players in creating it in the first place. From there, you work to balance the hormones that are making your body pack on the fat where you don’t want it!

I’ll explain all of this by getting into the nitty gritty of three of my favorite hormones: estrogen, cortisol and insulin. They’re my favorite because they are much easier to manage than most people realize! So if you have hormonal belly fat, take a breath, relax and keep reading!

The Bane Of Hormonal Belly Fat

When it comes to stubborn weight loss, one of the biggest complaints I hear about is the expanding waist line, pot belly, beer bellyin short, belly fat. For many people, this is the first area of the body where weight gain shows, and the last place it wants to leave. Unlike subcutaneous fat, which is stored just under the skin , belly fat is most often visceral, located around your midsection all the way inside the abdominal cavity. It feels harder because it is beneath the muscle, rather than on top.

Because of visceral fats location closer to the vital organs of your body, this type of fat greatly increases your risk for serious health problems. Since visceral fat cells are released directly into your blood, they end up making their way into your liver, pancreas, heart, and other vital organs which is a problem considering these fat cells contain triglycerides that can pump harmful free fatty acids into cells that are not designed to store fat. This can trigger a cascade of health problems, so its vitally important to reduce this type of fat as much as possible.

The Link Between Cortisol And Belly Fat

Lets face it: its a pretty stressful time to be alive. That means we should all be aware of how the hormone cortisol is impacting our lives and bodies. Cortisol, often referred to as the stress hormone, is produced by the adrenal glands. It puts your body into a fight-or-flight state, flooding your bloodstream with glucose and enhancing the brains ability to use it. It also stops or slows down any non-essential bodily functions, like digestion.

This was all well and good when we were living in caves and being hunted by tigers: your body would be flooded by cortisol when it saw a threat, then once the threat passed, cortisol levels would drop and your body could get back to functioning normally. The issue today is that many of us go around with chronically elevated cortisol levels, which can also mean high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and impaired digestion. All of that is often bad news for your weight and waistline.

Besides the biological relationship between cortisol and belly fat, there are also behavioral factors at play. We can probably all relate to reaching for unhealthy food when were stressed out , and so high cortisol levels can lead to weight gain in this manner. Plus, stress can cause digestive issues like constipation, diarrhea, and IBS, all of which can cause gas and belly bloating.
