What Is Hormone Therapy

Increase Estrogen Levels Naturally

During menopause, your body goes through major hormonal changes, decreasing the amount of hormones it makes particularly estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen and progesterone are produced by the ovaries. When your ovaries no longer make enough estrogen and progesterone, hormone therapy can be used as a supplement. Hormone therapy boosts your hormone levels and can help relieve some symptoms of menopause. Its also used as a preventative measure for osteoporosis.

There are two main types of hormone therapy:

  • Estrogen therapy : In this treatment, estrogen is taken alone. Its typically prescribed in a low dose and can be taken as a pill or patch. ET can also be given to you as a cream, vaginal ring, gel or spray. This type of treatment is used after a hysterectomy. Estrogen alone cant be used if a woman still has a uterus.
  • Estrogen Progesterone/Progestin Hormone Therapy : This treatment is also called combination therapy because it uses doses of estrogen and progesterone. Progesterone is available in its natural form, or also as a progestin . This type of hormone therapy is used if you still have your uterus.

Hormone therapy can relieve many of the symptoms of menopause, including:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats.
  • Vaginal dryness.

What Are The Symptoms Of Low Estrogen

First off, it is worth saying that low estrogen symptoms can be also a result of smoking, hereditary predisposition, and excessive exercising. So, whenever a woman wants to prevent the fast onset of menopause, she should avoid such activities, and inform a dedicated expert about signature genetic details. In such a case, he will be able to appoint hormone replacement therapy or recommend health supplements that will stabilize the levels as much as possible. Besides, such treatment can alleviate the symptoms of low estrogen, and let the woman live a comfortable life.

Animal Data: Disruption Of Brain Sexual Differentiation

Increasing Estrogen Levels

In the rat, genistein readily crosses the placenta and in the fetal brain, the bioactive aglycone form is present at levels comparable to circulating levels in the dam . In addition, the transfer of genistein to the brain from systemic circulation appears to be more efficient in prenatal animals than adults indicating that it and other isoflavone phytoestrogens could interfere with the organization of estrogen sensitive neuroendocrine signaling pathways. Hormone mediated architectural and functional changes within the HPG axis occur during a series of well defined critical periods spanning gestation through puberty, resulting in sex specific physiology and behavior in the adult animal . Interference with the hormone-sensitive formation of these pathways could result in irreversible developmental defects, potentially making development one of the most susceptible periods for phytoestrogen and EDC exposure over the lifespan.

Pros: Evidence For Health Benefits In Humans

How To Raise Low Estrogen Levels Naturally

Numerous epidemiological and clinical studies have now evaluated the relationship between phytoestrogen consumption and human disease outcomes, but the results have not yielded a clear picture as to whether or not these compounds have therapeutic potential . Dose, dietary composition, phytoestrogens administered, and duration of use vary considerably across epidemiological studies making them difficult to intercompare. Some feeding trials are limited by markedly small sample sizes, and several widely popularized studies were funded, at least in part, by the manufacturers of soy and soy-based supplements leading to some mistrust. Nonetheless, there is considerable public interest in the legitimacy of the claims being made regarding benefits to heart, bone, breast and menopausal symptoms. Unfortunately, the data supporting these claims are not strong in most cases, thus the degree to which phytoestrogen consumption confers meaningful health benefits remains unresolved .

Consider Certain Herbal Supplements

For those looking for an even more natural remedy, some researchers believe that herbal supplements can play a vital role in maintaining estrogen as you age. Herbs like black cohosh, chasteberry, and red clover all have at least some research that back up these claims.

Black cohosh is a traditional Native American herb that has historically been used to treat a variety of menstrual issues. Although more research is needed, some believe that black cohosh contains certain compounds that stimulate estrogen receptors, which may suggest a possible benefit of the herb when estrogen is low.

Chasteberry is another traditional herb that is perhaps best known for its use in treating gynecological conditions such as PMS. In one recent study, researchers found that chasteberry was capable of exhibiting estrogenic benefits, likely as a result of its phytoestrogen content.

Red clover is another herbal supplement that contains a handful of plant compounds called isoflavones that may be capable of mimicking estrogen in the body. These isoflavones include biochanin A, formonotin, genistein, and daidzein. A recent review study was able to find four different studies that all showed a significant increase in estrogen levels in women who used red clover supplements.

Cardiovascular Health And The Prevention Of Heart Disease

Increasing Estrogen Levels

There are numerous risk factors for cardiovascular disease including high blood pressure, obesity, C-reactive protein levels, systemic arterial compliance and the ratio of good to bad cholesterol. Of these, only marginally reduced LDL levels are a consistent feature of human and animal studies of soy intervention. The most significant reductions in LDL cholesterol levels are generally small and only seen in individuals with high cholesterol who replace a substantial portion of their animal protein intake with soy, consuming between 40 and 318 mg isoflavones per day . For example, daily administration of soy supplements providing 0.71.5 mg/kg isoflavones over 5 or 12 weeks did not alter serum lipids in men or women with average cholesterol levels , but lowered LDL levels have been reported in hypercholesterolemic women following soy isoflavone therapy .

My estrogen is very low and testosterone fairly low. It is effecting my mood and motivation severely.

I have purchased some Tongkat Ali for testosterone but need some options for estrogen. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I been told to look into Motherwort. Anything else?

I used to take eleuthero root ginseng. I noticibly looked healthier and felt better but it constantly dropped my blood sugar, and gave me horrendous neck artery pains . Other forms of ginseng have similar blood sugar effects and often make me extremely sleepy.

What common supplements and herbals would be good to try?

And for testosterone is there any consensus as to how to best take TongKat Ali and D-Aspartic Acid? Morning or night? Before bed or upon waking. With food or without?

Due to a chronic magnesium deficiency I got terrible muscle cramps mostly in my neck . Titrating up to 2 g/d of Mg in my case was necessary to get rid of these painful cramps.

Signs You May Need More Estrogen

There are several medical reasons why your estrogen levels may be low.

Low estrogen levels are typical if:

  • Youre in menopause
  • You have not yet reached puberty
  • You have a thyroid disorder or a congenital condition
  • Youre undergoing chemotherapy
  • Your pituitary gland is not functioning properly

Over-exercising, not eating enough calories, and being underweight can also cause your estrogen to drop significantly.

But what if you dont fall in any of those buckets?

If youre experiencing the following symptoms of low estrogen, it may be time to see your doctor:

  • Missing your period, or its irregular when you do get it
  • Having trouble sleeping
  • A change in sex drive
  • An increase in UTIs
  • Painful intercourse and vaginal dryness
  • Breast tenderness

Now, before you try to use these to self-diagnose the cause of your symptoms, its important to understand that this is not a wise idea.

Since these symptoms can overlap with many other issues, including severe medical conditions, its best to double-check with your doctor before you consider treating low estrogen on your own.

If you try to increase your estrogen levels when theyre already where they should be, youll end up with too much in your system, which can lead to a hormonal imbalance and these symptoms:

  • Irregular periods
  • Fatigue
  • Lumps in your breasts

Get tested if you suspect something is wrong, so both you and your doctor have an updated picture of where your estrogen levels currently stand before you start any treatment.

Perimenopause And Menopause Estrogen Levels

How to Increase Estrogen levels for MTF Transgender

After menopause, estrogen levels drop dramatically, as there are few follicles in your ovaries. Additionally, these follicles are no longer growing and producing the estradiol spikes that occur during the menstrual cycle . The laboratory estradiol levels of postmenopausal women are generally less than 20 pg/mL .

During perimenopause, people may notice that their body changes in response to these lower levels of estrogen.

Symptoms of low estrogen during perimenopause and menopause

  • Vaginal dryness is common. Without enough estrogen, the walls of the vagina are not able to maintain their thickness and are no longer as moist .

  • Hot flashes are associated with decreasing levels of estrogen, and can be treated using estrogen therapy . Phytoestrogens, or estrogens from food, may be moderately beneficial, but more research is needed .

  • Osteoporosis is a risk for post-menopausal people as estrogen levels decrease .

Yet our efforts must not begin and end there. If we are following a bioidentical rebalancing program, it is essential that we work with a physician to monitor our hormone levels, so that we can be sure we are getting treatment tailored to our individual needsno more, no less than the body requires.
