Is Melatonin Safe For Children

Is melatonin safe to help children sleep?

In addition to issues mentioned above, there are some things to consider regarding melatoninâs safety in children.

Melatonin supplements appear to be safe for most children for short-term use, but there arenât many studies on children and melatonin. Also, thereâs little information on the long-term effects of melatonin use in children. Because melatonin is a hormone, itâs possible that melatonin supplements could affect hormonal development, including puberty, menstrual cycles, and overproduction of the hormone prolactin, but we donât know for sure.

Possible melatonin supplement side effects reported in children have usually been mild and have included:

  • Drowsiness
  • Increased bedwetting or urination in the evening
  • Headache
  • Agitation.

How To Handle Sleep

If your child is having trouble sleeping, you should start with proper sleep hygiene like going to bed at the same time every night and reading a book before bed rather than watching TV in the bedroom .

In general, providers do not recommend any over-the-counter sleep aids for children.

If parents notice their child has chronic difficulty with sleep such as waking up frequently or non-restorative sleep, that is when they should be evaluated by a provider, Dr. Guminski said.

If you have questions about sleep and melatonin, talk to your provider.

When To Talk To Your Doctor About Melatonin

Sleep is essential for children for a number of reasons. During sleep, the body releases growth hormones and repairs damaged tissue and muscle. Appropriate sleep in children is linked to positive school performance.

If your child is struggling to fall asleep or get sufficient sleep, talk to your healthcare provider. They can help identify the cause of sleeplessness. Common reasons for a lack of sleep in children include insomnia and delayed sleep-phase syndrome.

What Is The Take Home Should My Child Take Melatonin

I have not met a parent who is eager to medicate their child. Such decisions are made with a lot of soul-searching, and frequently after unsuccessful attempts to address sleep problems via behavioral changes. Treatment options are limited. There are no FDA-approved insomnia medications for children except for chloral hydrate which is no longer available. Personally, I use melatonin for children commonly in my practice. It is very helpful for some children and families. I appreciate Dr. Kennaways concerns but I have seen first hand the consequences of poor sleep on children and families. I always investigate to make sure that I am not missing other causes of insomnia . My end goal is always to help a child sleep with a minimum of medications. I know that this is the goal of parents as well. Some children, especially those with autism of developmental issues, will not be able to sleep without medication. So, melatonin may be a good option for your child if:

  • Behavioral changes alone have been ineffective
  • Other medical causes of insomnia have been ruled out
  • Your physician thinks that melatonin is a safe option for your child and is willing to follow his or her insomnia over time

By the way, heres a great article from the Chicago Tribune on alternatives to melatonin.

Melatonin Dosage For Children

Short-term use of melatonin in small doses appears to be safe and well-tolerated by most children. The effective dosage for children ranges from 0.05 milligrams per kilogram to 5 milligrams of melatonin. When children experience side effects from taking melatonin, theyre typically mild and may include:

  • Related Reading

  • Drowsiness
  • Headaches
  • Medical professionals may recommend melatonin for children with conditions that affect their sleep, such as insomnia, autism spectrum disorder, or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Several studies have shown melatonin supplements can significantly improve overall sleep times by 25 minutes to 48 minutes, on average, for children with these conditions.

However, there havent been enough studies of melatonin in children for experts to determine an official recommended dosage or any potential long-term safety risks. Since melatonin is a hormone, its possible that taking supplemental melatonin could affect other aspects of hormone development in children, but further research is needed.

If your child is having sleep problems, experts recommend consulting your doctor before giving them melatonin. Research indicates that for half of the cases where melatonin was used to treat pediatric insomnia, better sleep habits were just as effective at relieving the childs sleep problems.

In a study published in 2011, researchers looked at the effect of melatonin on 101 patients. They found that those who took melatonin experiences a significant improvement in their symptoms whether alone or in addition to the antidepressant drug Prozac.

Other studies have also demonstrated that melatonin may help relieve other painful conditions such as migraines and chronic headache.

Unfortunately, poor sleep can affect a childs mood and ability to pay attention and learn. It has also been linked to health issues such as childhood obesity .

Though its considered safe for adults, you may wonder if your child can safely take melatonin.

This article explains whether kids can safely take melatonin supplements.

Melatonin is a hormone produced by your brains pineal gland.

Often referred to as the sleep hormone, it helps your body get ready for bed by setting your internal clock, also called the circadian rhythm .

Melatonin levels rise in the evening, which lets your body know its time to head to bed. Conversely, melatonin levels start to fall a few hours before its time to wake up.

Interestingly, this hormone plays a role in other functions besides sleep. It helps regulate your blood pressure, body temperature, cortisol levels and immune function (

In the US, melatonin is available over-the-counter at many drug and health food stores.

People take melatonin to cope with a variety of sleep-related issues, such as:

    • Insomnia
    • Sleep disorders related to mental health
    • Delayed sleep phase syndrome
    • Circadian rhythm disorders

However, in other parts of the world, including Australia, New Zealand and many European countries, melatonin is only available with a prescription.

Many parents wonder if melatonin supplements can help their child fall asleep.

Like many people I have had trouble sleeping at various stages of my life and have been on a constant lookout for a safe and effective, natural method of getting a better night of sleep. What is Melatonin? Melatonin for Kids and How to Sleep with Melatonin

Studies indicate that melatonin can help children suffering from insomnia fall asleep more quickly than they would without it. Melatonin may also help children stay asleep longer than they would otherwise, which is particularly helpful to parents who have an issue with kids staying in bed.

That said, the true effectiveness of melatonin on children is generally unknown and certainly an area that needs more study and research. Before you jump into using melatonin to help your child sleep, try behavioral intervention and sleep training first.

Some Top Melatonin Products For Kids

Please note that the statements below are based only on research. No one at Medical News Today, including the writer, has tried these products. Also, it is important to consult a doctor before administering melatonin to a child, as other treatments and approaches are better supported by research and may be safer and more effective.

Melatonin Could Help Kids With Adhd And Autism

Kids with attention disorders and autism commonly develop sleep problems that can be helped with melatonin. Additionally, medication used to treat ADHD can lead to difficulty falling asleep. That was the case for Jackie Botman,* whose son has ADHD. The eight-year-olds medication was keeping him up until 9:30 or laterhe was wired and couldnt settle down. He was resistant to calming down and having quiet time. He became chronically tired, says Botman, who lives in Toronto. Now her son takes a 5 mg dose of melatonin when hes brushing his teeth, then gets into bed and falls asleep in a reasonable amount of time.

Although Cummings agrees that melatonin can help kids with ADHD or autism, he says the downside is that theres a high relapse rate: Once you take your kid off melatonin, they are almost guaranteed to go back to having difficulty sleeping. It sets up a situation where those kids, to function well in life and in school, may need to use the melatonin on a longer-term basis, says Cummings.

Safety In Toddlers & Young Children

Dr. Maida Chen, who leads the Pediatric Sleep Center summarizes this well, There have only been a few studies to look at long-term melatonin use and associated effects, but some sleep specialists consider melatonin safe, particularly for occasional short-term use. Often the child has a chronic sleep disorder and melatonin is covering up the underlying symptoms. It can be a slippery slope for families because continuing use of melatonin can delay obtaining more appropriate treatment for the underlying sleep disorder.

Generally, research finds that supplemental melatonin is not tremendously effective in children who arent diagnosed with underlying ADHD or ASD, though some kids get benefit in falling asleep more quickly. I sincerely believe that many young children getting melatonin would do better with improved consistent bedtime routines, strict rules about no emitting devices for 1 hour prior to bedtime . For any child having trouble falling asleep, work to avoid screens and/or dim the screen light in the hours before bedtime.

    When Should Melatoninnot Be Used

Natrol: Natrol Kids Melatonin Gummies, Sleep Support, 1 mg ...

As mentioned above, children lose sleep for many reasons.Avoid melatonin:

    • if the insomnia is situational
    • if the insomnia is short-term
    • if the insomnia is due to an underlying physicalcause
    • if your child is younger than 3

Melatonin should never substitute for healthy sleeppractices: a regular, age-appropriate and consistent bedtime and bedtimeroutine, no caffeine, and no electronics or screens before bedtime.

Teach Your Child Healthy Bedtime Habits

Whether or not you choose to give your child melatonin as a sleep aid on a limited basis, having a regular bedtime routine should make it easier for your child to fall asleep.

    Try these ideas:

    • establish a set bedtime, so your child expects to go to sleep at the same time every night
    • have a set wakeup time each morning, so your child is tired at bedtime
    • put away smartphones and tablets an hour before bed, and keep devices out of the bedroom

Does Melatonin Work For Shift Workers

Shift work that involves night shifts may cause people to feel sleepy at work and make it difficult to sleep during the daytime after a shift ends.

According to two 2014 research reviews, studies on whether melatonin supplements help shift workers were generally small or inconclusive.

    • The first review looked at 7 studies that included a total of 263 participants. The results suggested that people taking melatonin may sleep about 24 minutes longer during the daytime, but other aspects of sleep, such as time needed to fall asleep, may not change. The evidence, however, was considered to be of low quality.
    • The other review looked at 8 studies , with a total of 300 participants, to see whether melatonin helped promote sleep in shift workers. Six of the studies were high quality, and they had inconclusive results. The review did not make any recommendations for melatonin use in shift workers.

    Children And Developmental Problems

Melatonin may also help treat children with various developmental conditions including autism spectrum disorders and ADHD.A review published in 2011 analyzed the findings of 35 studies related to melatonins effect on autism spectrum disorders including Aspergers syndrome and Rett syndrome.

The review concluded that supplementing with melatonin was linked to improvements including better sleep and improved behavior. Importantly, they also found there were very few side effects associated with the supplement.

Melatonin For Children A Guide For Parents

    posted on

Pediatricians frequently recommend melatonin for children with sleep problems, or parents might try it themselves. However, the proper use of melatonin is frequently misunderstood. Here is a guide for parents and pediatricians to decide if a child should try it, and to understand how it should be used.

A common thread I find in children coming to Sleep Clinic is that many or all of them have been on melatonin at some point, or are taking it currently. Melatonin is an important tool in the treatment of sleep disorders in children, and because it is naturally derived, there is a widespread perception that it is safe. However, I have become concerned by the frequency of its use, especially in an unsupervised way.

Melatonin sales have doubled in the past ten years, increasing from $90 million in 2007 to $260 million in 2012. Melatonin for children products are being marketed aggressively. I worry that the widespread availability of melatonin has led to some parents using it as a shortcut to good sleep practices. An article in the Wall Street Journal , quoted a fathers review on Amazon:

OK, yes, as parents my wife and I should do a better job starting the bedtime routine earlier, turning off the TV earlier, limiting sweets, etc., etc. Well, for whatever reason, this is not our strong suit. This 1 mg light dosage of melatonin is very helpful winding our kids down and getting them ready for bed.

Melatonin is a hormone that your brain produces in response to darkness. It helps with the timing of your circadian rhythms and with sleep. Being exposed to light at night can block melatonin production.

Research suggests that melatonin plays other important roles in the body beyond sleep. However, these effects are not fully understood.

Melatonin dietary supplements can be made from animals or microorganisms, but most often theyâre made synthetically. The information below is about melatonin dietary supplements.
