Alternatively, most sexual health clinics will be able to do this for you.

    What Is The Insertion Process

Removal of implanon nexplanon (birth control)

The Nexplanon implant is a quick and straightforward procedure that is done in your doctors office by a trained health care provider. Before you have the implant procedure, you will have an appointment with your healthcare provider to discuss various birth control options and the Nexplanon implant. At that time, you will also provide a urine sample to make sure you are not pregnant. Your health care provider will review and evaluate your medical history to be sure you have no health conditions that would adversely affect the Nexplanon implants effectiveness of suitability for you.

Ideally, you will schedule an appointment to have the implant procedure done on a day between the first day of menstrual bleeding and the fifth day, even if you are still bleeding. If you have it implanted during that timeof your cycle, the implant will be effective immediately and you will not need back-up contraception for any time period. However, if you have it implanted at any other time, you will need to use a condom for seven days after insertion.

On the other hand, if you decide that you want to become pregnant at any time, you can have the implant removed. Nexplanon will not affect your fertility, and you will become fertile almost immediately.

How Long Do Side Effects Last

If mild or moderate side effects are experienced, a healthcare provider will usually encourage the woman to keep the implant for another few months to see if side effects improve. If severe side effects are experienced or side effects are too unpleasant, the implant will be removed. Once removed, etonogestrel levels in the blood fall to undetectable levels in a week, so most temporary side effects such as headache, mood changes, and menstrual pattern changes will improve within a few days after removal. Serious side effects such as severe allergic reactions, blood clots, or an ectopic pregnancy will require emergency medical treatment. Some, such as severe blood clots or heart attack, could have lifelong complications.

How The Hormones Work In Nexplanon

If you get a Nexplanon implant during the first five days of your period, it is immediately effective at preventing you from becoming pregnant. If you get the implant at any other time in your cycle, you will need to use another form of birth control for the first week. After that, the implant becomes effective at protecting you from pregnancy for up to three years.

After the first year, the etonogestrel levels decrease slightly. The levels continue to decrease through the third year, but it remains above the threshold level necessary to prevent pregnancy.

The hormones in Nexplanon prevent pregnancy in three ways: 1) it stops your ovaries from releasing one of your eggs, 2) it thickens the mucus of your cervix so sperm cannot swim through it and reach an egg, and 3) it changes the lining of your uterus to prevent attachment by a fertilized egg.

If you have the device removed during the three-year period, most women become fertile within one week and resume regular menstrual cycles within six weeks.

    What Is The Contraceptive Implant

The contraceptive implant is a small, flexible rod about the size of a match stick. The implant is put under the skin of the upper arm. It can stay there for up to 3 years. The implant slowly releases a progestogen hormone called etonogestrel into the blood stream. This can prevent pregnancy for up to 3 years.

Progestogen hormones are also used in the contraceptive pill and are like the natural hormone progesterone that is made by the ovary. The contraceptive implant available in Australia is called Implanon NXT.

Among the most common risks associated with Nexplanon are potential problems with insertion or removal of the implant. If the implant is placed improperly, women may not be protected against pregnancy.

Women should be able to feel the implant under the skin to ensure proper placement. Removal of the implant can be complicated if the implant has moved after placement, sometimes resulting in surgery or special procedures to remove it. In rare instances, the implant has been found in the pulmonary artery of some patients.

Like other forms of hormonal contraception, there is a higher risk of serious cardiovascular events in women who smoke while using Nexplanon. Stroke, blood clots, heart attack, and high blood pressure are examples of the types of cardiovascular events that are more likely to occur in women who smoke while using Nexplanon.

As the age of the woman and the number of cigarettes smoked increases, the corresponding risk of experiencing cardiovascular issues also increases. Although smoking while using Nexplanon is to be avoided by women of all ages, women ages 35 and older are considered to be at especially high risk.

Hormonal forms of birth control cause an increased risk of experiencing blood clots, which can be life threatening women with a history of blood clots or blood clotting disorders should discuss their medical history with their healthcare provider before using a hormonal contraceptive like Nexplanon.
