Sugary foods and refined carbohydrates, which have a high GI level, are such foods . High-GI foods will have a more immediate and drastic effect on your blood sugar, with blood glucose spikes contributing to poorer skin and more chance of flare-ups.
Chocolate may also be a trigger for acne. According to a study published in The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, participants who ate dark chocolate daily for four weeks appeared to be more prone to developing acne at the end of the period. This is all important because research has shown there are androgen receptors in the base of the oil gland and also in the cells that line the pores! If there are high levels of testosterone floating in the body, they are highly capable of binding to these receptors.
To put it simply, when these hormones attach to the oil glands in the skin, they trigger the gland to produce more oil as well as feed the bacteria. Then, an inflamed acne lesion is well on its way to the surface of your skin.
The key takeaway is that by lowering androgen and testosterone levels in the body, the skin will not produce as much acne or not produce ANY at all.
So how does Estrogen play into all this?
Estrogen and testosterone frequently act like a teeter totter. As one goes up the other goes down.
Hormonal acne is an elevated androgen/testosterone and low estrogen issue. It is not an elevated estrogen problem. Therefore, taking herbal supplements that block estrogen, such as DIM, will make your acne worse and increase testosterone causing cystic breakouts. I do not recommend DIM for hormonal acne for these reasons.
So it makes sense that if you lower androgen levels, the skin will not produce as much oiland your acne will improve!

Now if youre like the hundreds of young women Ive consulted with then youve probably already started to clean up your diet. And rightly so!
It seems pretty logical that if you put junk food into your body then your skin is going to reflect this.
If your diet is made up of greasy, high carb, high sugar foods then your skin is going to get greasy, your pores are going to clog up and youre going to get nasty looking pimples.

Can Nutrients Affect Acne
However it is very obvious that Hippocrates ancient but very wise statement should hold some truth when applied to acne, given that the most efficacious current therapies for acne are retinoids. Oral administration of isotretinoin or topical application of its isomer and natural retinoid, tretinoin, are used as anti acne therapies14,15 13-cis-retinoic acid is the only drug that targets all four pathogenic factors of acne and is the most efficient in sebum suppression.16 13-cis-RA is a retinoid that could derive from the metabolism of Vitamin A. Although several websites proclaim that it is found in small quantities naturally in the body without citing a reference,17 we know that at least the natural isomers of retinoic acid also affect the disease. With that in mind, we can certainly predict an association between diet and acne.
Therefore how could we ever rule out the possibility that diet has no effect on acne? Especially when diet influences the absorption of a nutrient or a drug that affects the mitigation of that disease? May be we cannot treat acne with nutrition but we can certainly influence it. Perhaps no single food does causes acne or effectively treats its symptoms, but certainly we can advocate that it could ameliorate or worsen its severity.
Foods That Can Cause Acne
One common myth about food and acne is that eating oily food causes acne. That all depends on how you define oily. There are many foods that are high in healthy oils that dont cause acne to worsen or break out. The main action of foods that cause acne is that they cause your blood sugar to elevate quickly. While fast food and fried foods do of course raise blood sugar, its not the oil in them that contributes to acne specifically. Many of these high-glycemic foods dont contain any oils at all. High sugar foods and drinks like pastries, desserts, and sodas are all foods that can greatly contribute to acne. While eating foods like this every once in a while wont impact your skin much, frequently eating unhealthy fast food and high-sugar desserts and drinks can wreak havoc on your complexion. Could Diet Affect Acne
The fact that Western diets are often deficient in the longer chain omega-3s and their precursor LA, raises an additional issue for this discussion. It is known that the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in a typical Western diet can be 10:120:1,43,44 versus a 3:12:1 in a non-Western diet44 or primitive, non-industrialized populations.45
These findings were the basis for population-studies that revealed that non-Western diets correlated with the absence of acne.45 Several studies have suggested that inflammatory markers correlate with an increase of the omega-6/omega-3 ratio.43 The Omega-6 fatty acids are thought to induce more pro-inflammatory mediators and have been associated with the development of inflammatory acne.46,47 On the other hand, intake of high levels of omega-3 fatty acids is associated with decreases in inflammatory factors.48 In addition there are epidemiological studies that demonstrate that increasing the intake of omega-3 fatty acids through a diet rich in fish and seafood results in lower rates of inflammatory disease.43,49 There are also studies claiming that sebum production is increased by the consumption of dietary fat or carbohydrate50 and that variations in carbohydrates could also affect sebum composition.51,52
In addition, to these reports two previous studies54,55 had reported on how caloric restriction can change sebum composition. However we do not know if this could relate to the pathological condition of acne.
