Could Your Hormones Be The Reason Behind Your Premature Hair Loss

Whether you like it or not, your hormones are responsible in a big way for how your skin and hair feel and behave. Breaking out heavily on your jawline? Or are you finding hair growing in places on your face its not supposed to? Or perhaps, you feel like your hair simply doesnt have the volume it used to have? Most likely, its your hormones to blame. While many hormonal changes and imbalances are just a part of getting older, the effect they have can be reduced or aggravated based on your diet and lifestyle. We got Dr Harshna Bijlani, celebrity skin expert and medical head of The AgeLess Clinic, to break it down for us and share everything you should know about how your hormones affect your hair at every stage of your life.

Your overall metabolic process, muscle to body fat percentage, hair conditions are influenced by Human growth hormone.

Growth hormone is typically thought to be the most important of all hormones within your body. One of its many functions is to activate the liver to release yet another chemical Insulin Growth Factor 1.

These two hormones manage a process known as cellular regeneration the reproduction of vital new cells needed to change the old ones from the muscle groups, bones, organs, and yes, the hair.

When an individual is dealing with a GH deficiency, the amount of cellular regeneration will reduce and all places relying on a reliable supply of new cells will suffer. Human growth hormone growth hormone is used to reverse this deficiency to enable the body the capability to rejuvenate on its own through elevated cellular reproduction.

Each hair strand is made up of cells that begin their growth in the hair bulb at the lower hair follicle. Hair cells comprise keratin, a substance created by keratinocytes . The keratinocytes are nourished by blood vessels that deliver important hormones like Human growth hormone to the hair follicle. When lower HGH ranges reduce the cell reproduction process, the hair shaft weakens and will become thinner.

Male Sex Hormones And Hirsutism In Women

The female sex hormone oestrogen makes body hair fine and soft. Androgens are male sex hormones, including testosterone, which are responsible for masculine characteristics such as facial hair and coarse body hair. A womans ovaries and adrenal glands naturally make a small amount of androgens.

In most cases, hirsutism in women is thought to be caused by an abnormally high level of androgens. Other masculine features such as a deepened voice and increased muscle mass may also develop, and menstrual periods may cease . In other cases, womens androgen levels are normal, but their hair follicles are overly sensitive to the effects of male sex hormones.

Key Points About Hairiness

  • Excess body hair may run in families, and what is considered excessive may vary with ethnic background and culture.

  • Hirsutism, which occurs only in women, causes excess body hair to grow in a male pattern and differs from hypertrichosis, which occurs in men and women and causes excess hair to grow anywhere on the body.

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome is the most common cause of hirsutism.

  • If women also develop male characteristics , they may have a hormone disorder that requires prompt evaluation by a doctor.

  • If excess body hair appears suddenly and grows rapidly, the cause may be cancer.

  • Treatment may include hair removal and/or hormonal therapy.

Three Phases Of Hair Growth

Does HGH Cause Hair Loss?

To understand male pattern hair loss, we need to understand hair growth.

Hair growth is split into three phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen:

Anagen is the growth phase. Hairs remain in this phase for 2 to 6 years. The longer it lasts, the longer the hair grows. Normally, around 80 to 85 percent percent of the hairs on the head are in this phase.

Catagen lasts only 2 weeks. It allows the hair follicle to renew itself.

Telogen is the resting phase. The follicle lies dormant for 1 to 4 months. Normally between 12 and 20 percent of hairs are in this phase.

After this, anagen begins again. The existing hair is pushed out of the pore by the new growth and naturally sheds.

Excessive Hair Growth Hirsutism

Hirsutism is when women experience excessive hair growth on parts of the body where men usually grow hair. About 8 percent of women in the United States have some form of excessive hair growth.

Women of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and Mediterranean ancestry are more likely to develop hirsutism than women of other ethnicities. About half of women with hirsutism produce high levels of male hormones called androgens from their ovaries and adrenal glands. Hormonal disorders, such as polycystic ovary syndrome , may cause this to happen.

Hirsutism occurs in 80 percent of women who have PCOS.

The Role Of Hormones On Hair Loss

Androgen hormones, sometimes referred to as male hormones, like DHEA and testosterone, play the largest role in your overall hair growth. When your levels of these hormones are too high, you may experience excess hair growth, especially on the body or face. However, when your hormone levels drop, the reverse occurs and can lead to thinning hair and even hair loss.

The hormones produced by your thyroid also play an important role in hair growth and hair loss. When your thyroid isnt active enough , your metabolism slows. To compensate, your body begins to shut down less important functions, such as hair growth.

Menopausal women and women with polycystic ovarian syndrome or who are pregnant may also notice changes in their hair growth. This is typically because of changes or imbalances in estrogen and progesterone levels. The largest drop in estrogen occurs in perimenopause and menopause. Stress can exacerbate the effects of the loss of estrogen, causing further hair loss and thinning

There arent yet studies that show the benefits of serums as opposed to supplements. However, in general, topical treatments tend to work quicker than oral treatments.

Hair Follicles Cycle Between Rest And Growth

Before we jump into endocrine logistics, lets review some anatomical considerations. Hair changes can occur due to alterations of the hair fiber itself, the hair cycle, and/or the hair follicle the portion of hair beneath the surface of the skin. This human hair follicle is an intriguing structure! Hair follicles are incredibly productive, constantly undergoing cyclical rounds of rest , regeneration and degeneration , and they are unique in this ability to dynamically alternate between rest and active growth.

Hormones And Hair Growth

We say it all the time at Beardbrandtime and genetics are the two most significant contributors to growing a thick, full beard. Unfortunately, there isnt really anything you can do to alter those two things.

That said, when it comes to your genetics, namely your bodys production of testosterone, there are ways that you can help set yourself up for success.

But how exactly do genetics affect your beard? It all comes down to your hormones, specifically testosterone and dihydrotestosterone . The amount of DHT you have in your reproductive system plays an essential role in your beard and hair growth patterns.

Hormone Replacement Therapy As A Hair Loss Treatment

HORMONES AND HAIR REGROWTH FOR WOMEN| DR DRAY

Menopausal women may have another treatment option for their hair loss: hormone replacement therapy. Although controversial, these hormones available in estrogen and progesterone creams, pills, and patches can help prevent hair loss as well as ease menopause symptoms.

When women experience thinning hair and balding on the scalp, they have a number of options.

Women may opt for a topical treatment like minoxidil or ketoconazole shampoo as their hair loss treatment.

But women who are menopausal, experiencing severe hot flashes, and are prescribed hormone replacement therapy for their menopausal symptoms may get a double-whammy benefit: HRT can be a good treatment for hair loss, as well.

About Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone replacement therapy involves taking female hormones, typically estrogen and progestin together. Women may get these hormones in varying forms, including estrogen and progesterone creams, pills, and patches.

HRT is most often prescribed to help women combat the uncomfortable symptoms of menopause, including:

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Moodiness
  • Loss of libido

Menopausal women may also take hormone replacement therapy to ward off osteoporosis, a bone-thinning condition that is common in women after menopause due to a drop in estrogen levels.

HRT and Hair Loss

So for women who have hair loss caused by low estrogen levels, hormone replacement therapy may restore estrogen levels, ward off menopausal symptoms and slow hair loss.

During What Season Does Human Hair Grow The Fastest

Theres very little research on seasonal hair growth. One older 1991 found that for 14 white men in the UK, hair growth peaked in March and was at its lowest point in September. However, larger, more diverse studies are needed to support this.

Contrary to popular myth, there is no scientific evidence that hair grows faster in the summer.

Support Balanced Hormones For Healthy Hair Growth

Weve discussed how protein intake and digestion influence hair growth, but healthy hair also depends on hormone balance. Hormone balance, as you likely know, is an extraordinarily complex topic. Here are some of the key hormones at play in hair growth, highly simplified:

  • Cortisol This stress hormone spikes in response to chronic and acute stress, but it is also required to regulate daily physiological functions. Chronically elevated cortisol and chronically low cortisol both impair metabolism and, in turn, impede hair growth.
  • Estrogen Estrogen dominance is a highly common hormone imbalance for women and men of all ages. Toxins in our environment, such as pesticides and BPA, act like estrogen in the body. Further, foods such as soy throw estrogen out of balance. Elevated levels of estrogen can significantly contribute to hair loss for both men and women. My book Quit PMS discusses how women can naturally reverse estrogen dominance.
  • Thyroid hormones Adequate thyroid hormone levels mean a healthy metabolism, and a healthy metabolism means improved hair growth. Im discussing thyroid and hair growth in more detail below.

While hormone balance is multi-faceted, the good news is that the same steps help balance hormones across the board. If you havent read them already, check out my posts 15 Ways to Balance Hormones Right Now and my book Quit PMS.

How Is Hirsutism Diagnosed

Thereâs no doubt about the connection between estrogen and hair loss ...

Your healthcare provider will conduct a physical examination to determine the extent of the uncommon hair growth. Theyll also note any other physical signs that may accompany the hair growth, such as acne.

Once your healthcare provider has diagnosed hirsutism, they may use the Ferriman-Gallwey scale to grade its severity. The Ferriman-Gallwey scale examines nine areas of your body: your upper lip, chin, chest, upper abdomen, lower abdomen, upper arms, thighs, upper back and lower back/butt .

These areas receive a 0-4 score based on hair growth. A low number means your hirsutism is mild, and a high number means your hirsutism is more severe.

After examining the areas, your healthcare provider will add the scores together. If youre Black or white, a total score less than 8 is common. If youre Mediterranean, Hispanic or Middle Eastern, a total score less than 9 or 10 is common. If youre Asian, a total score less than 2 is common.
