Hormonal Weight Gain Causes (and How to Lose It!)

The body has an amazing ability to heal. We just need to give it the right resources.

In Overcoming Estrogen Dominance, my goal is to empower and give you the tools to take control of your hormones and health.

More than 70% of women experience estrogen dominance. The symptoms range from lumpy and fibrocystic breasts to thyroid nodules, hot flashes, fibroids, uterine polyps, painful, heavy or irregular periods to infertility and miscarriages, from mood swings to insomnia, weight gain to fatigue.

So many women have experienced the pain and frustration that comes when they feel their symptoms and complaints are dismissed or minimized. This is particularly true for women who are experiencing the symptoms of hormone imbalance. Even when doctors do offer treatment, its typically in the form of prescription medication or invasive surgical procedures.

In Overcoming Estrogen Dominance, I hope to show that those extreme interventions are often unnecessary, and to give women a roadmap to reverse estrogen dominance using food, herbs, supplements and natural protocols to rebalance hormones.

Hormones That Affect Weight Gain

The main hormones that control weight gain and weight loss are:

  • Cortisol
  • Estrogen
  • Thyroid hormones

Were going to look at each of these hormones more closely in just a moment.

But before we dive in, its important to remember that these hormones are not BAD.

They are our allies and they play very important roles in the body.

However, when theyre out of balance, theres a ripple effect that can cause rapid weight issues.

So, with that out of the way, lets look at how each of these hormones impact our weight.

Drug Treatment During Food Restriction

Adult wild-type C57BL/6 male mice were subjected to the same 60% food restriction protocol described earlier, except that they received twice a day i.p. injections of either mouse recombinant leptin , human GHR antagonist or control solution . Food deprivation-induced changes in energy expenditure and body weight were assessed as previously described.

What Are Hormone Diets And Can They Really Help You Lose Weight Quickly

As a registered dietitian, I have found that my clients are increasingly asking about books and programs that claim you can adjust your hormones with a diet to lose weight quickly and easily.

Search for hormone diet and there are more than 30 recent books on the topic. The authors allege that the reason people over 35 struggle to lose weight doesnt have to do with eating too much or not exercising enough. They say its your hormones working against you.

According to these books, you can trick your metabolism and feed your thyroid. They claim that all you need to do is eat the right foods and take the right supplements, and youll unlock the secret to lasting weight loss.

But is there any evidence these diets work?

In researching hormone diets, I found some that are sold at weight-loss centers, created by wellness experts who have no recognized credentials. They claim to promote rapid weight loss by affecting hormones such as insulin, which moves sugar from your blood into your cells cortisol, the stress hormone sex hormones such as testosterone and estrogen and thyroid hormones.

So, do hormone diets lead to quick and easy weight loss?

I dont know of any diet that will change hormone levels in a way that these hormone changes will be instrumental in promoting weight loss, Franck Mauvais-Jarvis, a professor of medicine at Tulane Universitys medical school, wrote in an email.

Metabolic Effects Induced By Food Restriction

Weight Management eNRG PerformanceeNRG Performance

To investigate the neuroendocrine and metabolic changes induced by weight loss, mice were initially single housed and their food intake was recorded. Then, mice were subjected to a 60% food restriction protocol, in which each mouse received 40% of their normal intake 2h before lights off for 5 to 7 consecutive days. During this period, the metabolic parameters were continuously assessed by the CLAMS, and their body weight, body composition and glycemia were monitored at the time the food was provided. Daily calculation of VO2 took into consideration the changes in body weight during food restriction to provide the value relative to body weight . Changes in oxygen consumption during food restriction were then reported as percentage of the values obtained from baseline . In addition, subgroups of adult control and AgRP GHR KO mice were killed at the beginning of the light cycle on the second day of food restriction. Mice with ad libitum access to food were killed at the same time. The hypothalamus, interscapular BAT and trunk blood were collected for subsequent analyses.

Use The Best Exercises For Hormonal Weight Gain

The best exercises for hormonal weight gain should help you do two things: First, they should get your heart rate and metabolism going. Boosting metabolic function means that your food intake is processed much more efficiently.

Secondly, the exercises you choose as part of your hormonal imbalance treatment regime should help eliminate the excess build-up of these hormones through the liver and the brain.

As hormones return to balance, the right ones will start firing for example, exercise stimulates the release of the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. But this also reduces your bodys stress hormones, cortisol and adrenaline.

So, what should you do? Heres our list of exercises for hormonal weight management:

Testing For Adrenal Fatigue It Can Be Tricky

If you go to a traditional doctor to see if your cortisol is skyrocketing or flat-lining, they will order a blood test. Unfortunately, this can give a very inaccurate or incomplete picture. It might show that your cortisol levels are fine in the morning, but wont show that your cortisol levels may be barely there by 3pm when you are having an energy crash. Also, blood tests only show the total value of cortisol and not the free value which is what your body utilizes.

Urine or saliva testing is a far more accurate way to check cortisol levels. Good tests will check your levels around four times over the course of the day.

Im also a fan of the DUTCH test.

Instead of collecting many samples, you need only one sample which involves placing urine on filter paper and letting it dry.

You can also check your adrenal function at home.

Hormones And Weight Loss

Scientists already know that a hormone called leptin plays a part in the bodys response to weight loss. Fat cells produce leptin, which inhibits hunger. When we lose weight, levels of leptin in the bloodstream drop, making us more likely to feel hungry.

Some people can develop leptin resistance , which means that they no longer respond to the hormone and, consequently, feel hungry more often.

As Donato explains, Leptin has hitherto been considered the main hormone that acts to conserve energy when were hungry.

However, despite scientists growing understanding of leptin, it has not led to any successful weight-loss interventions. The most recent study asks whether GH might be one of the missing pieces of the puzzle.

GH receptors are found in large quantities in muscle and tissue, in the liver, and in organs directly involved in growth metabolism, says Donato, but we found that the brain is also full of GH receptors. This is entirely new.

The scientists demonstrated that leptin levels decrease in response to a restriction in caloric intake, while levels of GH increase.

Can Extreme Anxiety Cause Weightloss

Women’s Wellness Chat: Hormones, Sexual Health, and Weight Loss

Yes it can cause you weight loss, but that is not a good reason to gain weight. Extreme anxiety can be a symptom of a lot of conditions, ranging from depression to hormonal imbalance, even thyroid problem. If you have extreme anxiety, you need to go to a doctor and have a full physical examination..

What Illnesses Can Cause Extreme Weight Loss

Generally, weight loss is not a symptom of an illness. It can be, but it is usually a symptom of malnutrition. Weight loss is the bodys way of adapting to situations in which either calories cannot be consumed or cannot be tolerated by the body. Either way, the body has adjusted by regulating weight loss. This is not an illness. The body is responding to a stressful situation. However, there are many illnesses that can cause extreme weight loss. Some of these illnesses are cancer, alcoholism, cancer, gastrointestinal disease, heart disease, endocrine disease, epileptic seizures, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS. Some things that can cause weight loss are poor diet, lack of exercise, decreased metabolism, and underlying mental health issues. Some common causes of weight loss include: depression, anorexia, bulimia, cancer, AIDS, diabetes, endocrine disorders, hyperthyroidism, and drug or alcohol addiction..

Do All Cancers Cause Weight Loss

No. Cancers dont always cause weight loss, but they often do. The reason is that cancers consume sugar at a rapid pace, while they also stop the body from using the sugar. So any cancer that is rapidly growing is probably using a lot of sugar, while starving itself to death at the same time. This is why it often leads to weight loss, although cancers can cause weight gain too, if they are releasing large amounts of the growth hormone..

What Is Hormonal Weight Gain

Hormones are chemical signals that control a wide variety of different functions in the body. Hormones influence everything from stress levels and mood, growth, sleep, reproduction, and yes, weight and appetite.

An imbalance in the hormone levels in your body, whether it is too many or too few, may cause a number of changes to your body and daily function. When looking at hormones and weight gain, these conditions may be worth discussing with your doctor:

How To Balance Leptin For Weight Loss:

A Weight Loss Hormone That Is Release During Exercise ...

A huge component to balancing your leptin levels is getting enough sleep. When you dont get enough sleep, your leptin levels are lower and you dont feel as satisfied after you eat. Harvard studies show that sleep deprivation reduces leptin levels and actually increases your bodys desire for fatty or carbohydrate-rich foods.

If you suspect a leptin imbalance is to blame for your weight gain, make sleep a priority each and every nightwe should all be prioritizing sleep anyway for its myriad of health benefits. But if weight loss is the kick in the pants you need to start catching more zzzs, then let that be your motivation.

Other ways to balance your leptin levels include:

  • Taking an Omega 3 supplement or eat more Omega 3 rich foods such as fatty fish, grass-fed meats, and chia seeds
  • Exercising regularly

Scientists Find Brain Hormone That Triggers Fat Burning

Biologists have identified a brain hormone that appears to trigger fat burning in the gut. Their findings in animal models could have implications for future pharmaceutical development.

Biologists at The Scripps Research Institute have identified a brain hormone that appears to trigger fat burning in the gut. Their findings in animal models could have implications for future pharmaceutical development.

“This was basic science that unlocked an interesting mystery,” said TSRI Assistant Professor Supriya Srinivasan, senior author of the new study, published in the journal Nature Communications.

Previous studies had shown that the neurotransmitter serotonin can drive fat loss. Yet no one was sure exactly how. To answer that question, Srinivasan and her colleagues experimented with roundworms called C. elegans, which are often used as model organisms in biology. These worms have simpler metabolic systems than humans, but their brains produce many of the same signaling molecules, leading many researchers to believe that findings in C. elegans may be relevant for humans.

The researchers deleted genes in C. elegans to see if they could interrupt the path between brain serotonin and fat burning. By testing one gene after another, they hoped to find the gene without which fat burning wouldn’t occur. This process of elimination led them to a gene that codes for a neuropeptide hormone they named FLP-7 .

Exercise Smarter But Not Harder

And the scenic stimulation of blue sky and nature, means that you come back from your walk usually feel uplifted, not depleted.

  • Move at a moderate pace: I recommend exercise like weight training, use of kettle bells and dancing.
  • Do more gentle forms of exercise: It may seem counter-intuitive to slow your exercise pace to get more benefit but it really is important. Think about animals they dont go on marathon runs or head to the gym every day.
  • Calm your brain with yoga: Yoga is like a moving meditation that connects your mind, breathe and body and induces a relaxation response which helps lower your cortisol levels. At the same time it boosts your alpha brain activity, which promotes greater calm.

What Happens If I Have Too Little Leptin

There is an extremely rare condition called congenital leptin deficiency, which is a genetic condition in which the body cannot produce leptin. In the UK, there are only about four families affected by this genetic condition.

Absence of leptin makes the body think it does not have any fat whatsoever and this results in uncontrolled food intake and severe childhood obesity. In addition, leptin deficiency may cause delayed puberty and poor function of the immune system. This condition can be well treated by leptin injections, which cause dramatic weight loss.

Hormones That Affect Body Shape And Weight Loss

What are the hormonal causes of weight gain?

Hormones are the most powerful chemical messengers in the body and can make or break your weight loss.

When we think of the word hormone, we tend to think of issues such as menopause, puberty, thyroid disease orbeing grumpy and craving sugar at that time of the month. Butdid you know the food you eat and the exercise you do has a huge impact on your hormonal health and weight? For weight loss, calories are not the entire picture. Hormonal balance is key to helping you burn belly fat and look and feel your very best at any age.

What are hormones?

Hormones are the most powerful chemical messengers in the body, and when it comes to weight loss and feeling well, can make it or break it. In addition to blood sugar control and insulin balance, hormones control metabolism and therefore are intricately connected to the amount of fat you gain or lose. In other words, burning fat and achieving successful weight loss is in fact partly a hormonal event.

The three little hormones I want you to know about are:

1) Insulin Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas whose main role is to regulate glucose levels and promote fat storage especially around the belly. Foods that promote the secretion of insulin include white refined flours and sugars.

2) Glucagon Glucagon and insulin are enemies and have opposing effects. In other words, when one is up, the other one is down. Glucagon is a fat burning hormone and is secreted by the consumption of protein.

Follow An Adrenal Fatigue Diet

Dont:

  • Live on caffeine: That cup of Joe may perk you up but have you stopped to think how? The reason a caffeine hit wakes you up is because it rapidly sends your adrenal hormones skyrocketing. This causes adrenaline to rise by around 32% and noradrenaline to spike by around 14%.

If you are caffeine sensitive, that adrenal rush may be accompanied by shaking, heart palpitations, difficulty sleeping and a general sense of anxiety. So if possible, cut caffeine out. Or at the very least, cut caffeine intake right back. Instead, try my matcha latte it has less caffeine so it is a much gentler stimulant.

  • Drop your carbs too low: Research shows that ketogenic-style diets that cut right back on carbs and increase protein, can increase cortisol levels by 18% while also reducing the thyroids T3 hormones.

You dont need extreme measures to ensure you are balancing hormones with food so make sure you eat some healthy carbs such as buckwheat, quinoa and sweet potato.

Adrenal Fatigue Treatment: How To Break The Cycle

Of all the hormonal balance problems that Ive worked with, adrenal fatigue takes the longest to heal and is the toughest to reverse. Thats why it is important to embrace solutions as soon as you can.

When combined, the following strategies can balance hormones naturally and increase your energy and calm, to break the cycle of adrenal fatigue:

High Blood Sugar Levels

Its normal for blood sugar levels to rise when you eat high-carb foods. But you may have insulin resistance if your blood sugar levels are always elevated.

Insulin is the hormone that helps transfer blood sugar into the cells. The cells tend to become insulin resistant when exposed to too much insulin for long, this leads to high blood sugar.

High blood sugar levels can cause weight gain and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.

My Stomach Is Usually Sore And Bloated Particularly After Food

When My Hormones Fluctuate, So Does My Weight

Blame it on: High adrenalin and cortisol

These two hormones can wreak havoc on your digestive system.

  • Reduction in stomach acid: You know how you just cant eat when stressed out? This is partly due to a primal response of your body to shut down the digestion so you are light to escape and deal with danger. In modern times, this low stomach acid can translate to feeling overly full and bloated after a meal, indigestion, seeing food particles in your poop, bad breath and nutritional malabsorption. This is some information about acid relux, stomach acid and some solutions.
  • Reduce blood flow to your gut: Your body doesnt need you to digest food or ovulate when youre stressed, so it quickly shuttles blood away from organs like your ovaries and gut, to organs like your heart. This means that your digestive system gets far less blood and oxygen to nourish it. This can lead to chronic inflammation, which compromises the protective functions of your gut wall. As a result, your stomach may become over-sensitive and develop food sensitivities or you may suffer discomfort every time you eat. Meanwhile, you are absorbing less nutrients, which only makes you more exhausted.
  • Encourage gut bacteria to grow: Studies show that when adrenaline is added to gut bacteria in a Petrie dish in a lab, the growth of bacteria like E.Coli increases substantially. This makes sense as low stomach acid creates a perfect environment for the pathogenic bacteria to grow.
