Why You Shouldn’t Give Your Child Melatonin
Putting your child to sleep may be your favorite routine or your worst nightmare depending on your kids inclination to sleep! Often, you are exhausted, your child refuses to sleep or sleeps fitfully through the night and you are tempted to give them something.
Many parents consider over-the-counter medications to help with their kid’s 40 winks, but is that really a good idea? Most doctors do not agree, and their reasons are fair! Although doctors prescribe melatonin in kids who have insomnia along with autism spectrum disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder , melatonin should not be used in the following cases:
- Healthy children without sleep problems to promote restful sleep
- Teenagers in an attempt to force;sleep onset to accommodate early school start times
Melatonin Uses For Children
In some countries, melatonin;is available as an over-the-counter supplement to help regulate our circadian rhythm and influence our sleep-wake patterns. Supplemental melatonin is not necessary for children with occasional sleep problems or children who can fall asleep within 30 minutes after lights are out.
But if the child has attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder , autism, restless legs syndrome, or anxiety disorders that keep him awake for hours at night, melatonin can help. Sleep dysfunction can have a severe effect on the childs health, and if your childs sleeplessness is affecting his performance during the day, the doctor may recommend giving him melatonin supplement.

Thus, a small dose a few hours before bedtime can have more of an effect than a large dose given at bedtime. In some situations dosing may the opposite effect. This is a special case and should be addressed with your physician. A couple of rules of thumb.
- Timing: For shifting sleep schedules earlier 36 hours before current sleep onset is best. For the sleep onset effects, 30 minutes before bedtime is recommended. Remember, not every child gets sleepy with melatonin.
- Dosing: In general, I would start at a low dose and increase slowly. Recognize that melatonin, unlike other medications, is a hormone, and that lower doses are sometimes more effective than higher ones, especially if the benefit of it reduces with time.
- Good Sleep Hygiene is Critical: Melatonin is not a substitute for good sleep hygiene practices and should only be used in concert with a high quality bedtime, limitation on light exposure, and an appropriate sleep schedule.
- When possible, purchasing a USP Verified preparation;may indicate that the product is manufactured to the;requirements of the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention, which could mean that the quality controllers are tighter.
Melatonin Supplements Arent Subject To Safety Standards
Because melatonin is licensed as a natural health product, companies are not subject to the same manufacturing scrutiny when making melatonin supplements as they are when producing pharmaceuticals. That means you dont have any reassurance that the package of 3 mg melatonin pills you picked up actually contains 3 mg doses. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine in January looked at 31 products and found that 71 percent of them actually contained doses that were more than 10 percent off what was stated, and 26 percent contained unlabelled serotonin, which is not authorized for sale as a supplement.
