Beer Bellies & Low Testosterone

As men age their levels of testosterone are also going to go down and down . Now, this is considered to be a normal response to the aging process. But diet, lack of exercise and other lifestyle factors can drive testosterone levels down into the dumps.

Studies have found men with lower testosterone levels are more likely to develop belly fat . Then this excess belly fat can be converted into estrogen if theyre under high-stress levels. Then next thing you know theyre fighting belly fat caused by both low testosterone and high estrogen levels. But studies have also found belly fat to go down when testosterone was increased .

Many men also like to drink a lot of beer but unfortunately, the hops in beer also contain phytoestrogens . These phytoestrogens are similar to estrogen. This can cause men to have increases in estrogen which leads to belly fat and man boobs. Plus drinking alcohol itself has been linked in studies to cause increases in abdominal fat as well .

Some natural ways to increase your testosterone is to lift weights, lower stress, get enough sleep, take vitamin D3, and get enough minerals such as zinc and magnesium . If none of these are getting your testosterone levels up high enough then consider talking to your doctor about testosterone replacement therapy as well.

Trigger warning: Diet culture and disordered eating.

It would be best to view weight loss trends with a skeptical eye, especially those that require huge overhalls to your current eating patterns and are restrictive. Diets that require you to eliminate food groups or eat meager calories are often more harmful than good. As well, your weight isn’t always an indicator of your health or hormonal functioning, as several other factors make up a healthy lifestyle.

The Hormone Diet claims to reset your hormones through diet modifications, helping you become healthier and lose weight in the process. But does it work, and is it safe? Here, we ask dietitians and to share their opinions of the Hormones Diet, whether or not it works, and what the pros and cons are.

Understand How Insulin Impacts Weight

Insulin is one of the most important hormones when it comes to weight loss and weight gain. Made by the pancreas, insulin is responsible for storing blood sugar, or utilizing it, depending upon your bodys needs of the moment. After you eat a large meal, a substantial amount of insulin releases itself into the bloodstream. It also enters the bloodstream as needed throughout the day, ensuring that blood sugar levels remain stable.

Another key function of this essential hormone is fat storage. Insulin decides how much fat to store, and how much to convert for energy expenditure. Chronically high levels of insulin can lead to a condition known as insulin resistance, which is linked to an uptick in blood sugar as well as continued elevated insulin levels.

Preventing this insulin imbalance is crucial, as it leads to weight gain, and eventually type 2 diabetes. When insulin levels remain high over an extended period of time, obesity and metabolic syndrome are often the unfortunate outcome.

Be Wary Of Dairy Products

Dairy is an important source of nutrients for many people. However, females concerned about levels of reproductive hormones may wish to use caution, especially before consuming cream or yogurt.

A 2017 study notes that eating dairy can reduce levels of some protective hormones.

In addition, the authors point to an association between eating cream and yogurt and missing ovulation. The link is unclear, and the researchers call for further studies.

Don’t Forget Healthy Fats

How to Balance Your Hormones

Healthy fats are the building blocks of all hormonesand are especially helpful with stabilizing the production of the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline. Aim to get 15 to 30 grams of healthy fats every day.

Many people have trouble digesting fats and can spike triglycerides, so take a digestive enzyme with lipase to help metabolize the fats better.

Salmon And Albacore Tuna

Fat and cholesterol are the building blocks of hormones. You need enough cholesterol to make sex hormones like estrogen and testosterone. The key is to choose fats high in omega-3s and to limit saturated fats . Salmon, canned albacore tuna, walnuts, flaxseed, olive oil, avocados and chia seeds are high in omega-3 fatty acids.

“Salmon also stabilizes your hunger hormones and is high in vitamin D, which helps regulate female testosterone levels,” says Carrie Gabriel M.S., RDN, a dietitian and owner of Steps2Nutrition. “The good fats in fish improve overall hormonal communication. The endocrine system uses hormones to communicate with the brain, which in turn boosts our mood and gives us better cognitive skills.”

Goals For Your Personal Pcos Diet

As I mentioned earlier, there is no perfect PCOS diet.

Every womans PCOS presentation is going to be different. This means that every womans PCOS diet should be different as well.

Im not going to give you broad-sweeping diet recommendations that focus on removing certain foods or eliminating entire classes of macronutrients.

Instead, Im going to teach you how to eat for the three main pillars of PCOS: Blood sugar balance, inflammation reduction, and hormone regulation.

These are the three main physiological challenges behind most cases of PCOS. And when it comes to choosing the best diet for PCOS, eating to correct these top 3 imbalances is the way to go.

For some women though, dietary intervention isnt enough to give them relief from their PCOS symptoms. In these cases, I recommend working with a trained medical professional, like myself, to come up with a diet;and lifestyle protocol tailored specifically for you.

Fat Fiber + Antioxidants

Fat is essential for hormone production and balance. Typically I recommend a diet high in healthy fats like omega-3s and monounsaturated fats for those that are suffering from hormonal imbalance. Fiber is also essential because not only does it help to bind to toxins and excess hormones for excretion, but it also helps to promote a healthy gut .

Antioxidants help to fight stress and inflammation to the body, which supports cortisol reduction, and in turn reduces estrogen dominance.

Hot Tip: You can tell if the produce is organic or not by looking at the PLU # on the stickers. Anything beginning with a 9 is organic, with a 4 is conventional

Aristos Note: While eating organic and local is HIGHLY encouraged, if it is more expensive focus on the Clean 15 and Dirty 12 by EWG that updates their list every year, wash your produce, eat seasonally and definitely look out for any produce, even if non organic, that is NON-GMO!

Your High Estrogen Levels Are Expanding Your Fat Cells

The Best Meal Plan for Hormone Imbalances

Although estrogen is responsible for making women uniquely women, it’s also the hormone that can be the most troublesome in the fat department. At normal levels, estrogen actually helps keep you lean by goosing the production of insulin, a hormone that manages blood sugar. When estrogen gets thrown off, though, it turns you into a weight-gain machine.

Here’s how: When you eat, your blood sugar rises. Like a bodyguard, insulin lowers it by escorting glucose into three different places in your body. When insulin is in good working formnot too high and not too lowit sends a small amount of glucose to your liver, a large amount to your muscles to use as fuel, and little to none for fat storage.

If you’re healthy and in good shape, your pancreas produces exactly the right amount of insulin to have your blood sugar softly rise and fall within a narrow range . But when your estrogen levels climb, the cells that produce insulin become strained, and you can become insulin resistant.

That’s when insulin starts to usher less glucose to the liver and muscles, raising the levels of sugar in your bloodstream and ultimately storing the glucose as fat. Your fat tissue can expand by as much as four times to accommodate the storage of glucose.

What Should I Eat To Balance Hormones

Swap refined carbs for whole foods: Cutting back on added sugars and refined, or simple, carbohydrates will reduce insulin resistance. Refined carbohydrates are found in salty snack foods such as pretzels, crackers and chips, fast food, white bread and pasta, regular soda, and sweets such as cookies, cakes, candy and pastries.

Try replacing some of these processed carbohydrates with natural, whole foods such as vegetables, fruit, beans, chickpeas and lentils.

Try healthy fats: To support healthy leptin and ghrelin levels, incorporate foods with healthy fats into your eating plan. Examples include fish, walnuts, other nuts and seeds, and olive oil.

Look for protein: Eating protein at every meal, but especially at breakfast, can help reduce your ghrelin levels. Lower ghrelin levels, in turn, may reduce overeating later in the day. Try eggs or Greek yogurt for breakfast.

Relieve menopause symptoms: While you can’t get estrogen from your diet, foods containing phytoestrogenslike flaxseed and soycan help relieve symptoms.

Eat enough iodine: Fish, seaweed, iodized salt and eggs are good sources of iodine.

Feel fuller with fiber: Fiber can keep you full longer, too. Oatmeal, or a high-fiber, high-protein breakfast cereal will help you start the day in a healthy way.

Eat foods rich in vitamin D: Vitamin D, which is found in tuna, egg yolks, and fortified milks and cereals, is an important nutrient for women.
