- Older children and teens should avoid naps during the day.
- Set regular bedtimes and wake-up times to help regulate your child’s body clock.
- Avoid screen time at least an hour before bedtime. The blue light from tablets or monitors can make it harder to fall asleep.
- Have dinner at least 2 hours before bedtime and avoid food and drinks with caffeine.
- Make sure bedrooms are quiet and dark.
- Set your thermostat to a comfortable temperature. Bedrooms shouldn’t be kept too warm.
- Have a soothing bedtime routine to help children wind down before sleep.
If your child has trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, call your pediatrician for advice and ask if melatonin supplements might help.
Is Melatonin Safe For Babies
Melatonin is not recommended for infants. Melatonin concentrations are quite low in babies three months and younger, and their circadian systems are still developing. At this time, there are no long-term studies on melatonin use in babies.

How Do You Know If Melatonin Might Be Helpful
Children on melatonin should meet some criteria for insomnia, and in particular for difficulty falling asleep. But they also should have other things ruled out, experts said.
If you are worried about your kids sleep, talk to your pediatrician, said Craig Canapari, M.D., an associate professor of pediatrics at Yale University, director of the Pediatric Sleep Center at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Melatonin certainly may be on the table for a finite period of time, but you have to look and see is there an underlying problem that is causing your childs insomnia.
For example, melatonin is not appropriate for restless leg syndrome. Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Institutes of Health say that children should not take melatonin long-term, but neither organization defines what long-term means. Some children naturally fall asleep later than parents might like, but that doesnt mean they need melatonin.

Lots of adults regulate their sleep with melatonin supplements, but what about kids? Is melatonin safe for children? Does it work?
About 25% of children take a long time to fall asleepgetting out of their bed and infamously asking for one more drink of water, one more story. In medical terms we call this sleep-onset delay, settling difficulties, or bedtime resistance. Bedtime resistance is more than just annoying to tired parentskids who dont sleep well can have behavioral, attentional and emotional problems. Many kids diagnosed with ADHD really just have poor sleep. Kids who sleep well do better academically, and are less likely to be overweight, get sports injuries, and get sick. We know melatonin is key to regulating the bodys natural clock, or circadian rhythms. To fix bedtime resistance we need to fix melatonin regulation.
Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone that our bodies make. Healthy adults and children get a surge of melatonin about 30 minutes before they get sleepy. This melatonin surge seems to be trigged by a reduction of light. This is why we get sleepy when it gets dark. The trouble comes when our brain doesnt release the hormone at the right times, and our sleep cycles get out of whack, such as when we are jet-lagged. The same thing happens to toddlers who miss naps, get sick, or just grow out of their regular sleep routines. This is where I think melatonin supplements may help kidswhen they need to re-program their circadian rhythms.

Can Children Take Melatonin
Can children take melatonin? Most short-term studies show that melatonin is safe with little to no side effects and may help kids fall asleep faster and sleep longer. However, its long-term use is not well studied in children. For this reason, its not advised to give your child melatonin unless instructed by your doctor.
How much melatonin is safe for kids? Most children who benefit from melatonin even those with diagnoses of ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorders dont need more than 3 to 6 mg of melatonin. Some children benefit from as little as 0.5 mg before bedtime. Younger children tend to be given 1 to 3 mg and older children/teens a little more.
At what age is it safe to give a child melatonin? In general, melatonin should not be given to healthy, typically developing children under age 3, as difficulties falling and staying asleep in these children are almost always behavioral in nature.
Why you shouldnt give your child melatonin? Side effects from taking melatonin are daytime sleepiness, headaches, and giddiness. These may impair the childs school performance. Other rare side effects include abdominal pain, irritability, confusion, and depression. It is unknown how common or severe these side effects might be in children.
When To See Your Doctor
There have been no cases of harm in overdose with melatonin. If you have taken more melatonin than it said on the label, you might become very sleepy. Stay somewhere safe, with a friend or family member to watch you while you sleep off the effects. Tell your doctor or pharmacist as well. It should take about 12 hours for your body to deal with the extra doses. Do not try to drive or do anything that could be dangerous to yourself or others.
Stop taking melatonin and go to a doctor straight away if you get any of the following symptoms:
- fainting or losing consciousness
- dizziness or vertigo
- feeling mixed up and confused
- severe chest pain, or changes in heartbeat
- a flaky pink/red rash on your skin, particularly on your elbows and knees, called psoriasis

What Should Parents Be Concerned About
The parenting website of the A.A.P. has warned of concerns that melatonin might affect puberty, but so far there isnt any solid evidence of this.
In a 2019 review of recent studies about melatonin and puberty, the authors found it difficult to draw strong conclusions. Only a few studies have examined the topic on a long-term basis, and these had small sample sizes, incomplete follow-up and poor measures of pubertal timing, the authors said.
There are other concerns, too. Side effects can include morning sleepiness, nightmares, agitation, headaches and increased urination at night. And melatonin could interact with certain medications. But in general, Dr. Owens said, its pretty well tolerated among her patients.
More worrisome is the lack of strict regulation of melatonin products. A 2017 study tested 31 different melatonin supplements and found most of the supplements did not have the same amount of melatonin listed on their labels. In addition, 26 percent of the supplements contained serotonin, a hormone that can have harmful effects even at relatively low levels.
I was so shocked by that, and it completely changed my recommendations to families, Dr. Owens said. She now recommends the brand Natrol because it has been used in clinical trials that evaluated its purity.
Is Melatonin Safe For Kids

Can Melatonin Help With Insomnia
People with insomnia have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. When symptoms last a month or longer, itâs called chronic insomnia.
According to practice guidelines from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American College of Physicians , thereâs not enough strong evidence on the effectiveness or safety of melatonin supplementation for chronic insomnia to recommend its use. The American College of Physicians guidelines strongly recommend the use of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia as an initial treatment for insomnia.
Melatonin Could Help Kids With Adhd And Autism
Kids with attention disorders and autism commonly develop sleep problems that can be helped with melatonin. Additionally, medication used to treat ADHD can lead to difficulty falling asleep. That was the case for Jackie Botman,* whose son has ADHD. The eight-year-olds medication was keeping him up until 9:30 or laterhe was wired and couldnt settle down. He was resistant to calming down and having quiet time. He became chronically tired, says Botman, who lives in Toronto. Now her son takes a 5 mg dose of melatonin when hes brushing his teeth, then gets into bed and falls asleep in a reasonable amount of time.
Although Cummings agrees that melatonin can help kids with ADHD or autism, he says the downside is that theres a high relapse rate: Once you take your kid off melatonin, they are almost guaranteed to go back to having difficulty sleeping. It sets up a situation where those kids, to function well in life and in school, may need to use the melatonin on a longer-term basis, says Cummings.

Jet Lag And Shift Work
Melatonin is known to reduce jet lag, especially in eastward travel. But, if the time it is taken is not correct, it can instead delay adaptation.
Melatonin appears to have limited use against the sleep problems of people who work shift work. Tentative evidence suggests that it increases the length of time people are able to sleep.

What Is The Dose Of Melatonin For Children
Here is how we use melatonin in our clinic. In our clinic we follow the dosing recommendations in the Bruni article. We use a maximum dose of 3 mg for children less than 88 lbs 40kg. and 5 mg for children more than 88 lbs /40 kg. Often kids come to my clinic on higher doses if 10 mg doesnt work, sometimes lower doses or a different preparation work better! Also remember, not everyone responds to melatonin. Recognize that melatonin, unlike other medications, is a hormone, and that lower doses are sometimes more effective than higher ones, especially if the benefit of it reduces with time.
For assistance with sleep onset, usually dosing 30-60 minutes before the desired bedtime is best. I usually start at 1 mg and increase by 1 mg every 3-5 days to the maximum dose . Some children will actually do better with an earlier dose for example, around dinnertime. So you may want to vary this a bit. If one mg works, you might want to see if you can get away with less.
For shifting sleep schedules later , the dosing is different. You definitely want to work with a sleep doctor for this. That being said, we usually start with 0.25-0.5 mg four hours before bedtime and titrate up by 0.5 mg until you get a benefit.
Heres the critical part. Melatonin is not a substitute for good sleep hygiene practices and should only be used in concert with a high quality bedtime, limitation on light exposure, and an appropriate sleep schedule.

Melatonin Is Not Meant For Kids
In her sleep consulting practice, McGinn has met babies who have been on melatonin from as young as four months of age. But, of the more than 500 melatonin-containing products licensed for sale in Canada, only two are licensed for teenagers , and there arent any approved for kids under 12.
Cummings, who does recommend melatonin to some of his pediatric patients as a treatment for managing insomnia, says the average kid under five would not have developed the type of sleep disorder where melatonin could be useful, and therefore they wouldnt need it.
Does Melatonin Work For Shift Workers

How To Take Melatonin
You donât need a big amount of melatonin to see any benefit. Taking more of it doesnât make it work better or faster. Start with a small dose. If you find you need more, you can slowly take more over time.
When you take it may be even more important than how much you take. The best timing of your dose depends on the sleep issue youâre trying to solve:
- To deal with jet lag, take it when you arrive at your destination at the time youâd like to go to bed. Some studies have found that taking it as early as 3 days before your trip can help jet lag symptoms. Keep in mind, though, that melatonin is best when youâre traveling east. Thereâs no evidence that it helps you adjust to westward travel.
- If you work the night shift, take it at the end of your workday, but never before you drive home.
Side Effects You Must Do Something About
Rarely, melatonin can cause problems with your childs heart. If your child develops chest pain or has a fast heart rate , contact your doctor straight away or take your child to hospital.
If your child seems very unwell in any way that is unusual for them and you are concerned, take them to hospital.
