Research On Melatonin And Blood Clotting
As far back as 2008, the Journal of Pineal Research published a study that showed the relationship between taking oral melatonin and blood coagulation. The study included 46 healthy men between 21 and 29 years of age. The subjects were given a placebo containing no medication or 3mg of oral melatonin. The study results reported: A single dose of oral melatonin was associated with lower plasma levels of procoagulant factors 60 mins later. Procoagulant factors promote blood clotting, and melatonin had lowered their levels, making clotting less likely. A 2013 research paper published by Arushanian described melatonin as a natural inhibitor of aggregation that is potentially impactful in cardiovascular disorders so may be recommended for use in pharmacotherapy. A 2020 review of studies, published by Otamas, Grant and Aijan supported previous evidence, suggesting that, melatonin inhibits platelet aggregation and might affect the coagulation cascade, altering fibrin clot structure and/resistance to fibrinolysis. In laymans terms, melatonin inhibits bodily functions that lead to blood clots. This more recent study recommended further study to confirm and progress the research findings. The research on melatonin in this area is ongoing and more is needed in the future.
Consistent Vitamin K Intake Is Key
I think all warfarin-treated patients would benefit from increasing their daily vitamin K intake, Ferland said in a statement.
She added that given the direct interaction between dietary vitamin K and the action of the drug, it is important that daily vitamin K intakes be as consistent as possible.
Our hope is that healthcare professionals will stop advising warfarin-treated patients to avoid green vegetables, she said.
Clinically, this may prevent patients on warfarin from having too many highs and lows on their INRs, the International Normalized Ratio blood test used to monitor how thick or thin the blood is, she said. This could give more consistency to the patients blood clotting ability.
But she cautioned that while the information in this trial is thought-provoking for physicians, larger studies will need to be conducted before significant changes can be made in patient care.

Melatonin may also be effective at regulating other bodily functions aside from sleep. Circulating IMA was negatively correlated to melatonin in these patients.
Effects Of Daily Melatonin Use
Studies show serious adverse affects and toxicity of melatonin is relatively rare. However, more long-term human research needs to be conducted to conclusively prove this.
What this means, is that itâs relatively safe to use melatonin daily. However its advisable to only do this for a short period. While no current research points at the toxicity of using melatonin long term, you can have side effects when you take it at too high a dose.
Most doctors recommend a dosage of 1 to 3 milligrams . In some people, an overdose of melatonin may cause excessive sleepiness while in others it might produce the opposite of the desired effect and trigger over alertness.
Signs of an overdose include nausea, diarrhea, headaches, and anxiety. In some cases, some people might also experience a spike in their blood pressure.
