Testosterone Therapy Often Makes Them Feel Better

FTM Testosterone GEL Everything You Need To Know | Switching From IM

There appears to be little argument to the fact that men with below normal testosterone levels experience a benefit from testosterone gel and at times multiple benefits.

The biggest benefit is usually in how men feel, Anawalt says. For hypogonadal men, testosterone therapy often makes them feel better. Many men will report improved sexual function and pleasure and some will report improved energy and vitality.

The Testosterone Trials proved these outcomes. The most striking and consistent improvements were in sexual function, Bhasin says. Men who received testosterone reported better sexual function than those in the placebo group. This included more sexual activity, improved sexual desire, and increased erectile function.

In the Physical Function Trial, the mens six-minute walking distance was measured. There was some improvement in the walking speed in all men who were included in the trial. The percent of men whose six-minute walking distance increased by at least 50 m did not differ significantly between the two groups. However, when men were asked whether their walking ability was better, they perceived that it had improved, according to Bhasin.

Testosterone Assays Interpretation Of Results

Although it is not mandatory to perform testosterone level estimation prior to or for monitoring treatment, it can be useful. A low FAI < 1.0% in women with symptoms of low sexual desire and arousal, supports the use of testosterone supplementation. Repeat estimation at the 2-3 month follow up visit can be performed to demonstrate if there has been an increase in levels, though clinical response is of paramount importance. It is also useful to demonstrate that values are being maintained within the female physiological range, typically < 5%, thus making androgenic side effects less likely.

Hemoglobin Hematocrit Clinical Chemistry

Serum hemoglobin and hematocrit concentrations increased with T gel replacement, compared with month 0 and month 6 and then plateaued at 12 months after initiation of treatment . The increases in hematocrit and hemoglobin were statistically significant in both younger and older subjects . At 12 and 18 months after treatment, the increase in hemoglobin and hematocrit concentrations was higher in the group applying 10 g T gel per day , compared with those applying less T gel. The increases were not different between the groups at months 30 and 36. Fourteen patients had hemoglobin over 18 g/dl or hematocrit greater than 56% at some time during the study. The T gel dose was reduced or temporarily discontinued in these patients. Serum total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels did not change significantly throughout the T gel treatment period. Serum high-density lipoprotein showed a very small but statistically significant increase across time with T gel. The increase was not clinically relevant. Mean serum creatinine was statistically increased across the treatment period. The mean increase varied from 0.08 to 0.20 mg/dl. Serum total bilirubin also showed a small but significant increase with T gel treatment that was not considered to be clinically significant. There were no significant changes in serum liver enzymes or other clinical chemistry parameters.

Note 2: Although the NICE NG23 guideline recommends that systemic HRT should be prescribed before a trial of testosterone, there are trial data in women with HSDD which indicate that testosterone used without systemic estrogen, is equally effective and safe.

Note 3: Tibolone is weakly androgenic, progestogenic and estrogenic although it is an option for women with low sexual desire it is not sufficiently androgenic nor estrogenic in many women. The progestogenic effect is not required in hysterectomised women and may cause unnecessary adverse effects.

Note 4: Compounded bioidentical testosterone preparations are not recommended by the regulatory authorities or the menopause societies.

A Year After Treatment: What Can I Expect

After a year of TRT, men tend to experience the full benefits of treatment.

Patients mental state is much more balanced and their brains are able to think much clearer. They are much more positive, happier, and see an increase in their overall well-being.

Their sleep habits are fully restored. This also boosts morale and greater feelings of enjoyment.

Mens sex lives reach a peak, and they continue to experience great levels of sexual intimacy. Not only does sexual desire increase, but their physical attractiveness continues to develop.

Men will see continued growth in their muscle strength and have much stronger bones.

Their lean body mass is much more developed than it was at the 3-month mark. This leads to a reduction in overall body fat.

Prostate levels do not continue to grow after its initial spike. They have leveled out at this point in treatment.

Blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels are also at a healthy state. Lastly, patients will see increased red blood cell formation.

Response To Testosterone Therapy And Duration Of Use

The loss of sexual desire is complex and may have hormonal, medical, psychosexual and psychosocial aetiologies. In clinical trials of women with HSDD, approximately 2/3 of women responded positively to testosterone therapy . The trials demonstrated that response may not be immediate, taking 8-12 weeks in some instances for the effect to become clinically significant. It is therefore advised that treatment should trialled for a minimum of 3 months and maximally for 6 months before being discontinued due to lack of efficacy. Duration of use should be individualised and evaluated at least on an annual basis, weighing up pros and cons according to benefits and risks, as per HRT advice from all menopause societies.

So How Soon Will I See Results

It isnt uncommon for patients to feel impatient waiting to see results. Days? Weeks? Months? The trouble is, the signs and symptoms of low testosterone vary from patient to patient, as do the treatments and the expected time it will take for results to be seen.

For most men, treatment is a gradual process with no definitive timeframe. With that in mind, youre most likely to record positive results within the first 3 to 6 months, though a majority of men report an easing of symptoms and a return to health much sooner. Often as little as 3 to 6 weeks.

Based on our experience here at Genesys Mens Health, weve found that certain symptoms respond to treatment quicker than others. Its not uncommon for your libido and sex drive to return to healthy levels within 3 weeks, while other symptoms such as chronic illness or obesity may take a little longer.
