Weight Loss and Menopause: Does Hormone Replacement Therapy Work?

But before you run to your doctor to ask for hormonal therapy, the authors note that the effect on weight loss is pretty small, so its not a replacement for other lifestyle changes, like exercise. In fact, to reap the benefits of a lower BMI, women had to be currently on hormone therapy. After stopping, the women instead rebounded by gaining fat, the study found.

Can Hormone Therapy Be Used To Prevent Breast Cancer

Yes. Most breast cancers are ER positive, and clinical trials have tested whether hormone therapy can be used to prevent breast cancer in women who are at increased risk of developing the disease.

A large NCI-sponsored randomized clinical trial called the Breast Cancer Prevention Trial found that tamoxifen, taken for 5 years, reduces the risk of developing invasive breast cancer by about 50% in postmenopausal women who were at increased risk . Long-term follow-up of another randomized trial, the International Breast Cancer Intervention Study I, found that 5 years of tamoxifen treatment reduces the incidence of breast cancer for at least 20 years . A subsequent large randomized trial, the Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene, which was also sponsored by NCI, found that 5 years of raloxifene reduces breast cancer risk in such women by about 38% .

As a result of these trials, both tamoxifen and raloxifene have been approved by the FDA to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer in women at high risk of the disease. Tamoxifen is approved for this use regardless of menopausal status. Raloxifene is approved for use only in postmenopausal women.

Does Hormone Replacement Therapy Help Depression

Yes, HRT may help women reduce and prevent depression. Fluctuating hormone levels during menopause can often lead to irritability, mood swings, and mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression. Unpleasant menopause symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and loss of sexual libido can also contribute to depression in women who are going through menopause. Hormone replacement therapy can help treat depression by regulating estrogen levels and improving many unwanted symptoms related to menopause.

How does Hormone Replacement Therapy affect weight loss??
    Media Release: 24 November 2008

Weight and appetite experts from around the world met at a conference in Bangkok 1 earlier this year to discuss sex differences in obesity. One line of discussion looked at factors leading to womens weight gain during menopause, and how it might be avoided.

Co-chairs of the conference, Dr Amanda Sainsbury-Salis from Sydneys Garvan Institute of Medical Research and Dr Jennifer Lovejoy from the University of Washington, Seattle have summarised the conference consensus for the December issue of Obesity Reviews. The paper is available online.

One of the most interesting things that came out of the conference with applicability to large numbers of women was the discussion about why women gain weight during menopause, said Dr Sainsbury-Salis.

So many women get confused when they start to gain weight during menopause, because their eating habits havent changed.

Sue: Fatigue And Brain Fog Relief After Testosterone Therapy*

When the hot flashes started, my plan was to just deal with them and let them run their course. However, I did not expect the fatigue or the brain fog. I was struggling through my workouts and struggling even more with finding words during presentations and meetings. I met with Dr. Scinta and discussed BHRT pellets as an option for me.

Honestly, I left the office not really sure this would help me and wasnt convinced a bioidentical hormone is what I needed. UntilI received the results of my blood work and found out my testosterone was down to an 8. I now realized I needed to do something and scheduled an appointment for the insertion.

The results for me were immediate and I felt strong for the first time in over a year. I also noticed my brain was not scrambling for words and I was able to articulate my thoughts without a struggle. Who knew these symptoms were all interrelated? I now know when Im due for another insertion just by listening to my body. When I feel really tired for no obvious reason or the word struggle starts, I know it is time to call the office for a blood draw and schedule the next insertion.

I would recommend this therapy to anyone experiencing symptoms to see if hormone replacement is right for them. The staff at the office are wonderful and always take the time to answer all of your questions and concerns.

  • Reprimo treatment is an innovation in the genetic sphere reported by UCLA researchers and introduced in the Nature Metabolism journal. Scientists believe that this gene can become an effective tool in menopause treatment, though this approach is still on the experimental stage. Researchers provide a theory that it participates in the process of cancer prevention that is a rare but possible side effect of hormone therapy for weight loss.

Hrt For Weight Loss In Women: How It Works

By SynergenX Health & Wellness Clinic

Who wants more belly fat, hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia and irritability? That would be no one. But women going through menopause experience these symptoms, which can last for years, as their menstrual cycles end. As hormones shift, specifically, a decrease of estrogen, many women gain fat around their bellies and even notice muscle loss.

But theres hope for relief from the increased belly fat and weight gain that comes along with menopause. A recent study of postmenopausal women, ages 50 to 80, found that those who took hormones had significantly lower levels of belly fat than women who did not take hormones.

    Putting The Pieces Together

    Pin on Healthy Weight Loss

The obvious answer to weight loss is reducing calorie intake and exercising more. But if you have maxed out your capacity to diet and exercise without seeing the desired results or have hormone-related symptoms that interfere with your ability to make healthy lifestyle changes, its time to do more. For many, the answer could be hormone replacement therapy .

For women experiencing menopause or perimenopause, HRT under the guidance of a hormone health specialist can be life-changing. Researchers have found strong evidence that estrogen or combined estrogen-progesterone replacement therapy may help to prevent menopause-related changes in body composition and the associated metabolic consequences. Additionally, many women find that HRT alleviates symptoms that interfere with weight losssuch as fatigue, sleep disturbances, and mood symptomsand allows them to make the choices necessary to shed unwanted pounds.

If a thyroid condition is thwarting your efforts for weight loss over 40, getting a specific and accurate diagnosis is critical. If your lab results and symptoms point to hypothyroidism, hormone therapy is the gold standard in treatment and can help you restore balance and take control of your health. A hormone specialist can devise a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs and provide nutrition and lifestyle recommendations to support greater ongoing health.

Hormone Replacement May Fight Belly Fat Study Says

Hormone replacement may prevent belly fat in postmenopausal women

The effects last only as long as the woman is on hormones

If youre a woman of a certain age, you might have wondered: Where did this belly fat come from? Youre eating and exercising no differently than you did before menopause struck, but suddenly, your tummy has ballooned.

    Welcome to life without estrogen.

Preclinical data has shown that either surgical menopause or declines in estrogen accelerates fat accumulation, primarily visceral or abdominal fat, said Dr. JoAnn Pinkerton, executive director of the North American Menopause Society. Changes over time in how women look such as noticing more abdominal fat, having increases in waist size, pants no longer fitting in the waist or increases in breast size all may be signs.

Unfortunately, that extra fat can be life-threatening.

A body fat percentage of 35% or more for postmenopausal women means a higher risk of obesity-related heart and diabetes risks, Pinkerton explained, including higher total and LDL cholesterol and insulin resistance.

To combat those health risks, women are encouraged to eat healthy, watch their weight and exercise. Now, there may be another weapon in the arsenal: menopausal hormone therapy.

    Monica: My Ability To Multi

DHEA Supplementation | Fountain of Youth | Testosterone | Weight loss | Does it work?

Dr. Scinta and staff are amazing!! Prior to the pellets, I felt like I was slowly losing my mind and no energy to try to find it. The brain fog that I was experiencing was affecting my daily living and was starting to become a bit scary for me. I am very good at multi-tasking and was finding it increasingly difficult to remember even the simplest things to do. My energy level was at an all-time low- just getting out of bed was a taxing effort. Lack of sleep was becoming routine and night sweats were the norm. I saw the information during a visit for my husbands weight loss program and thought it couldnt hurt to give it a try. Reviewing my first set of labs with Dr. Scinta revealed so much that I couldnt believe that I was even functioning on a day by day basis. Within a week and a half after my first insertion of the pellets I knew I made the best decision ever. I actually began to sleep through the night, awake with energy and dry clothes . My ability to multi-task and plan ahead improved greatly that I felt like a human being again. I will continue to take the pellets for as long as I can and highly recommend and encourage others to give it a try.

How Is Hormone Therapy Used To Treat Hormone

Hormone therapy may be used in several ways to treat hormone-sensitive prostate cancer, including:

Early-stage prostate cancer with an intermediate or high risk of recurrence. Men with early-stage prostate cancer that has an intermediate or high risk of recurrence often receive hormone therapy before, during, and/or after radiation therapy, or after prostatectomy . Factors that are used to determine the risk of prostate cancer recurrence include the grade of the tumor , the extent to which the tumor has spread into surrounding tissue, and whether tumor cells are found in nearby lymph nodes during surgery.

The use of hormone therapy before prostatectomy has not been shown to be of benefit and is not a standard treatment. More intensive androgen blockade prior to prostatectomy is being studied in clinical trials.

Relapsed/recurrent prostate cancer. Hormone therapy used alone is the standard treatment for men who have a prostate cancer recurrence as documented by CT, MRI, or bone scan after treatment with radiation therapy or prostatectomy.

Hormone therapy is sometimes recommended for men who have a “biochemical” recurrencea rise in prostate-specific antigen level following primary local treatment with surgery or radiationespecially if the PSA level doubles in fewer than 3 months.

Can Bioidentical Hormones Help Me Lose Weight

During menopause, a woman can put on up to 20 pounds just through hormonal imbalance. Estrogen deficiency triggers the production of more fat cells in order to try and boost estrogen levels in the body, while testosterone causes the redistribution of fat to settle on the stomach area.

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy may help you to put on less weight at this time. However, depending on the combination of hormones, side effects can also include weight gain. You should consult a medical professional before choosing any treatment, to ensure that the right combinations of hormones is prescribed, to effectively balance your hormones, and minimize menopausal weight gain.

But bioidentical hormone therapy may have dangerous side effects. Click on the following link to learn more about bioidentical hormones risks, and to learn about other ways to help combat symptoms of menopause.
