When Should You Get A Hormone Blood Test

How Stress Blocks Fat Loss (Test Your Stress Hormone Level at Home)

If you have symptoms of a possible hormonal imbalance, you might need to get a hormone blood test. According to the Society for Endocrinology, it’s usually best to have your blood drawn for a hormone test in the first half of your menstrual cycle, because levels are more distinct at that time. However, if you’re having a progesterone test to see if you’re ovulating properly, it will likely be measured on day 21 of your cycle, which is in the middle of the second half.

What Is An At

Most at-home testosterone tests measure your testosterone levels by analyzing your saliva. Your body naturally secretes hormones like testosterone in your saliva, and laboratories can use different methods to test the amount present.

People have used at-home testosterone tests as an alternative to a blood test for detecting the amount of testosterone present in your body. To do this, purchase a test kit, follow the directions, and send it to the laboratory via mail. The laboratory tests the saliva and provides your results.

Other at-home test kits require blood samples for testing, which usually involve a finger stick and applying the blood to a spot or tube for collection.

The American Urology Association recommends collecting a testosterone sample first thing in the morning. This is when testosterone levels are likely to be at their lowest.

What Are Hormone Test Kits

Hormone test;kits can give you an indication of whether the hormone levels in your body are within;a healthy range and whether your hormones are able to;function properly.

Hormones are messenger substances in your body that carry out important processes. They travel with the blood to pass chemically encoded information from one part of the body to another. Depending on the hormone, this information transfer takes varying lengths of time, from a few seconds to several hours. Once they have reached their destination, hormones usually trigger a complex chain of reactions.

What Are Female Hormones

Estrogen and progesterone are the primary sex hormones in females. Most of the body’s supply of these hormones is produced by the ovaries, although small amounts are supplied by other tissues in the body. While best known for their primary function of regulating the reproductive system, female hormones also play a role in other aspects of women’s health, including cardiac function, metabolism, bone health, skin thickness and elasticity, urinary tract health, emotional health and brain function, among others.

Cortisol and the thyroid hormone can become imbalanced for various reasons and affect both men and women. Ensuring a healthy profile means keeping abreast of your body’s levels. A comprehensive hormone test can provide much needed insight.

The three primary sex hormones in women are estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.

What Causes A Hormone Imbalance

Estrogen Tests

Hormonal imbalance can occur when the endocrine glands are not functioning properly, for example, the thyroid gland and pituitary gland.; An overactive or underactive thyroid can cause a hormonal imbalance.

If you suffer from chronic stress, then high levels of the stress hormone cortisol will impact the production of other key hormones such as progesterone. The body will create more cortisol by using available progesterone, thus depleting progesterone levels.; Progesterone is a key balancing hormone so will impact the production of other hormones such as oestrogen.

Conditions such as type 1 and 2 diabetes and Cushings syndrome can also result in a hormone imbalance.

And finally, a poor diet and lack of good nutrition will also have an impact, as well as your age.; As women enter the menopause around their mid-forties their hormones will begin to fluctuate.

What Is High Estrogen In Men

Too much estrogen in the male body can interfere with fertility, sexual function and even raise the risk for chronic diseases. One cause of hormone imbalance in aging men is that is testosterone is converted to estrogen, which can result in an excess of estradiol. Lab testing can reveal hormonal imbalances of estrogen and testosterone.

Symptoms Of Low Progesterone Levels

Progesterone is primarily responsible for keeping your reproductive system healthy. Low levels of progesterone can mean estrogen dominance. So, you need to keep an eye out for the following symptoms:

  • Migraines or Headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Bloating

There are two main problems associated with low levels of progesterone. You may either have trouble conceiving or you may experience heightened symptoms of menopause. High progesterone levels not only increase your chances of conceiving, but it can also help in relieving the symptoms of menopause in some cases.

Symptoms And Potential Complications

Imbalances in female hormones can have far-ranging effects on the body, producing a variety of physical, emotional and cognitive changes. These changes can cause symptoms that may include:

  • Menstrual cycle changes, including shorter or longer times between periods, and periods that are longer, shorter, heavier or lighter than normal.
  • Hot flashes and night sweats.
  • Insomnia and other sleep disturbances
  • Diminished sex drive
  • Unexplained weight gain, especially in the abdominal area, hips and thighs
  • Skin changes, such as thinning, dryness and wrinkling
  • Dry, brittle hair

Female hormone imbalance can increase a woman’s risk of a number of diseases and health problems. Among the most serious of these is heart disease, with risk increasing as estrogen levels decrease. Women with hormonal imbalances are also at greater risk for osteoporosis, since low levels of estrogens can interfere with the absorption of calcium and other nutrients essential to the maintenance of bone health and density.

How Is Low Testosterone Diagnosed What Treatments Are Available

How To Test Estrogen Levels

Most healthcare providers will measure their testosterone levels by having a blood test, doing a physical exam and having the patient describe his symptoms. Finally, they may order additional tests to rule out other possible diagnoses.

Testosterone is sometimes prescribed for men with low testosterone. Almost all hormone supplements and testosterone treatments are available in different forms, including lozenges, patches, gels and creams.

Because of the limited knowledge regarding this condition, challenges in having a proper diagnosis, as well as the possible side effects of treatments, HRT should not administer for men without proper testing, retesting and consultation with a healthcare provider to discuss the pros and cons. One may want to consider an endocrinologist who specializes in hormones.

Youre probably familiar with testosterone, the primary sex hormone in men, but did you know its also important in women? If youre a woman, your levels of testosterone will be low, but if these levels become too high you may have difficulties becoming pregnant.

Cortisol is well known as the stress hormone, but its job doesnt stop there. Its also involved in controlling blood pressure, reducing inflammation and metabolising glucose.;;

For women, during your menstrual cycle, the hormone progesteroneprepares the uterus for implantation of the embryo and helps to maintain pregnancy.

Lastly, one you may not be familiar with is 17-hydroxyprogesterone . Yes, big long name but its just as important too. A 17-hydroxyprogesterone blood test can identify if you have a disorder of the adrenal glands which can also interfere with your ability to get pregnant. The adrenal glands are small organs which produce important hormones that regulate many vital processes in your body.

Is This Test Still Useful If I Am Using A Form Of Contraception

If you are taking a progesterone only form of contraception such as progesterone-only pill, progesterone implant, or Minerva coil then this test is still useful as these forms of conception do not suppress normal production of FSH, LH, or oestradiol. This test is not useful if taking a combined form of conception e.g the combined oral conceptive pill .

How Do The Tests Work

Estrogen Tests

A person can purchase a home hormone test online from various labs. Most do not accept direct billing from health insurance providers. Before buying a test, it may be a good idea to check whether the insurance provider will reimburse the cost. If so, a person can forward an invoice from the lab to their insurance company with their claim for reimbursement.

Once a person makes a purchase, the lab ships their testing kit.

Men And Estrogen: What You Need To Know

Estrogen is known primarily as a female hormone that helps regulate menstrual cycles, yet the hormone plays a bigger role in mens health than most people realize. Men produce small amounts of estrogen as part of their normal functioning male reproductive system, along with the male hormone testosterone. As they age, less testosterone is produced.

Yet questions are beginning to emerge as to what specific part estrogen plays in male development, especially as a man ages. Once largely ignored, estrogen levels in men are now under the microscope as researchers are trying to determine this hormone’s role in men and how it affects the body’s different hormone levels.

A decrease in estrogen, for example, may be a factor in fat accumulation in men as well as women. One endocrinologist at Harvard Medical School reported in a 2013 study that some of the symptoms of testosterone deficiency in males, including a decline in libido, were at least partially caused by lower estrogen production.

Hormone Testing: What To Check And Why

Questions about hormone testing are common among my patients and on social media. Women want to know which hormones they need to check and why. They also want to know what hormones and other biomarkers can be tested at home. In this video and accompanying article, I cover the biomarkers that I check for myself and my patients approximately once per quarter. Note that not all biomarkers I discuss below have been validated for blood spot testing versus the gold standard of a blood draw for serum testing, which is what I use for treatment decisions. Still, one can infer trends and screen for problems to investigate further. My highest recommendation is to perform serum testing for all treatment decisions, though that may be difficult during quarantine and lockdown. I created this video to show the blood spot test that I am performing in lockdown, even with the caveat that it is not considered the gold standard for all tests mentioned in this article.
