Number : Do You Even Need A Menstrual Period At All

CAN BIRTH CONTROL PILLS CAUSE INFERTILITY

Here’s a fun fact: Monthly menstruation isn’t really necessary. In hunter-gatherer times, women were having babies one after the other, and they breastfed for long intervals, which suppresses ovulation and menstruation. Prehistoric women had about 50 menstruations, while modern women have about 450 periods!

With a 28-day cycle , the traditional birth control pill has no basis in biology. The makers of the pill decided to go this route to mimic the natural menstruation cycle to be more acceptable to society.

We know what you’re thinking: Can I just take birth control pills and not have my period at all? The answer is yes you’re allowed to skip your periods using birth control pills. You should ask your doctor if you’re interested. We got all the information in our previous article on how to delay your period.

Does hormonal birth control cause cancer?

It is not known if hormonal birth control pills cause breast cancer. Some studies, but not all, suggest that there could be a slight increase in the risk of breast cancer among current users with longer duration of use.

If you have breast cancer now, or have had it in the past, do not use hormonal birth control because some breast cancers are sensitive to hormones.

Women who use birth control pills may have a slightly higher chance of getting cervical cancer. However, this may be due to other reasons such as having more sexual partners.

Do You Ovulate On Birth Control

Each type of hormonal birth control affects ovulation in a different way. Depending on the hormones and the dosage found in your particular type of birth control, you may or may not ovulate when using birth control.

In general, combined forms of birth control containing both progestin and ethinyl estradiol work to prevent ovulation as long as you use them consistently and effectively. Progestin-only forms of birth control usually halt ovulation but do not do so in a consistent manner. About 4 in 10 women using progestin-only birth control still ovulate.

You will DEFINITELY NOT ovulate if you are using:

  • Combination oral contraceptive pills

You will PROBABLY NOT ovulate if you are using:

  • Birth control shot/injection
  • Progestin-only oral contraceptive pills
  • Hormonal IUD
  • Contraceptive implant

How To Choose The Best Birth Control Pill For You

Because every woman is different, your body may tolerate some brands of birth control pills better than others.

Here are a couple of steps we suggest you consider when thinking about what birth control is best for you:

What are the side effects? Most doctors recommend staying on a new birth control pill for at least 2-3 months. However, different women experience different side effects, so if you try one and it’s not the right fit, be sure to tell your doctor so you can try a different pill.

What hormones would work best in my body? Most doctors will probably recommend a combined contraceptive, but if estrogen is a concern , you may want to consider a progestin-only pill.

Is it name-brand or generic? In general, when you are looking at name-brand birth controls, they will be more expensive. Depending on your insurance or budget, you may want to ask about the generic version of birth control

Why do I want to be on birth control? If you are simply looking for a contraception method, the pill you choose may be different from if you are looking for birth control for acne, or PMDD, etc. Be mindful of the fact that the pill does not protect against STDs.

What if I’m still not sure? Birth control is different for everybody, if you have any questions you should contact your doctor, or sign up for Pill Club to get in touch with an expert.

Most women take birth control pills that contain both progestin and estrogen to prevent or decrease breakthrough bleeding.

Also, taking birth control pills continuously over a long time can cause breakthrough bleeding. This is why health care providers sometimes recommend taking a break from contraceptive pills to avoid health complications.

How Do I Use The Different Types Of Birth Control Pills

    Combination Pills :

As long as you take 1 pill every day, youll be protected from pregnancy. You dont have to take your combination pill at the exact same time every day. But taking it at the same time is a good idea because it helps keep you in the habit of remembering your pill. You can also use an alarm, calendar reminder, or our birth control app to help you remember. Most combination pills come in 28-day or 21-day packs.

    If you have 28-day packs:

Take 1 pill every day for 28 days in a row, and then start a new pack on day 29. The last pills in 28-day packs of combination pills do not have hormones in them. These pills are called “reminder” or placebo pills they help remind you to take your pill every day and start your next pack on time. How many days you take hormone-free reminder pills depends on the brand of pill. Most pill packs have hormone-free pills for 7 days, but sometimes there are less. The reminder pills may contain iron or other supplements. You get your period during the week you take these reminder pills. Youll still be protected from pregnancy even if you dont take the reminder pills just remember to start your next pack on time.

Switch To Another Form Of Birth Control

If you have persistent vaginal discharge after starting the pill, or if you have a large amount of vaginal discharge thats causing discomfort or annoyance, its best to talk to your healthcare provider about switching to another form of birth control.

Sometimes, switching from a combined birth control pill to a progestin-only pill is enough to get any increase in vaginal discharge under control.

Other forms of birth control, such as the IUD, Depo-Provera® injection, dont use estrogen, meaning theyre less likely to trigger an increase in cervical fluid than the combined pill.

How To Avoid Having Expired Pills

It can be easy to let birth control pills expire without even realizing it. If you receive more than one months supply at a time, be sure to use the oldest pack first. You can also maximize your pills effectiveness by taking it at the same time every day.

Birth control pills are up to 99 percent effective when taken at the same time every day without missing a dose. This is considered perfect use. If you miss a dose or take the pill at a different time each day, the pill is about 91 percent effective. This is considered typical use.

Combination birth control pills are available in 21- or 28-day packs. In both types of packs, there are 21 pills that contain hormones. In the case of 28-day packs, there are seven reminder pills that dont contain hormones.

When taking 21-day packs, one pill is taken every day around the same time for three weeks. The following week no pills are taken, and the week after that you start a new pack.

Twenty-eight day packs are taken the same way, but you take the seven inactive pills the last week. If you skip this week of inactive pills, you may forget to start your new pack on time. This can affect the level of hormones present in your body and may affect your birth controls effectiveness.

Progestin-only pills come in 28-day packs. All pills contain progestin and are taken once daily around the same time. There are no placebo pills in a progestin-only pill pack.

Vaginal Dryness & The Birth Control Pill

Birth Control 101: Everything you need to know about the pill

Depending on the type of birth control pill you are on, some may be better than others. Pills with low levels of estrogen AND that contain drospirenone, desogestrel or norgestimate seem to have a largely negative impact on libido and vaginal dryness. Testosterone contributes to lubrication in the vagina but birth control pills lower a womans testosterone levels produced by the ovaries, which leads to vaginal dryness. Estrogen also helps keep your vaginal tissues lubricated so when there is less of it, meaning less blood flow to the tissue, the result is dryness of either the vagina or vulva. Quick tip: use a silicone-based lubricant and hormonal creams to apply to the opening of the vagina to reduce the dryness.

    Smoking And Birth Control

If youre a smoker and over 35, taking a birth control method that contains estrogen can increase your overall risk, so a doctor can assess whether a progestin-only pill would be a good fit instead. If youre younger than 35, a doctor can probably prescribe a combination method, like the pill, patch, or ring. Of course, you can also consider non-hormonal birth control options that wont put you at increased risk .
