We know that melatonin is crucial to health, but flooding your system with melatonin doesnt automatically mean less free radicals and a better immune system. Its all about melatonin balance.

Side effects of melatonin supplementation are relatively common and highly problematic. According to Dr. Breus, melatonin side effects include:

What Exactly Is Melatonin

Melatonin is a natural hormone produced in the pineal gland of your brain. It helps regulate our circadian rhythmstelling the body when to sleep, wake up and eatand is usually released at night as a signal its time to go to bed. When your circadian rhythm gets disruptedfrom things like jet lag, anxiety or insomniait can affect your melatonin rhythms.

The over-the-counter melatonin is a synthetic version that mimics the effects of your natural melatonin, letting your brain and body know that its time to shut your eyes so you can relax and fall asleep easier.

For exhausted kids and parents, this hormone has become quite popular. Melatonin is the second most popular natural product used by children in the United States, second only to fish oil. Although there has been a growth in popularity, since its not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration , you may wonder if its safe.

Is Melatonin Safe For My Child

Does a big school presentation have your little one up again? Are they having a hard time counting sheep? If your child is having trouble falling and staying asleep, they arent alone.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 15 to 25% of children and adolescents have trouble with sleep. It may not only impact your sleep but it can also lead to some difficult behavioral and health problems in your child.

If youve tried everything in the book, from limited technology use before bed to regularly scheduled bedtimes and calming sleep routines to no-avail, you may wonder if melatonin is the answer.

We spoke with Bryan Kuhn, a clinical pharmacist and poison information specialist with Banner Poison & Drug Information Center, to discuss the supplements risks and benefits.

Is Melatonin Safe For Babies

Melatonin Isn

Melatonin is not recommended for infants. Melatonin concentrations are quite low in babies three months and younger, and their circadian systems are still developing. At this time, there are no long-term studies on melatonin use in babies.

If your infant struggles to sleep, talk to your pediatrician. They can help you identify possible causes and develop a treatment plan.

Melatonin Not Recommended For Children Or Teens As Sleep Aid

Is it okay to give my teenage daughter melatonin to help her sleep better? I have read that it’s a safe alternative to sleep medicines.

Answer:

Although melatonin has been shown to be useful for treating sleep problems in adults, it has not been carefully studied in children. Due to the lack of scientific evidence, and because of some potentially harmful side effects, melatonin is not recommended as a sleep aid for children and teens. Making lifestyle changes that can enhance healthy sleep is a better alternative for most people your daughter’s age.

Melatonin is a hormone produced by your brain’s pineal gland. Melatonin appears to be linked to the body’s sleep/wake cycle, or circadian rhythm. The release of melatonin is stimulated by darkness and suppressed by light. The levels of melatonin in your blood are highest just before you go to sleep.

Some research suggests that, in adults, melatonin supplements might be helpful in treating jet lag or reducing the time it takes to fall asleep. The most common side effects from taking melatonin are daytime sleepiness, dizziness and headaches. Less common side effects can include abdominal pain, mild anxiety, irritability, confusion and feelings of depression. It is not known how common or severe these side effects might be in children.

Is Melatonin Safe To Take Every Night

Americans arent sleeping well. Roughly 80% of U.S. adults say they struggle to fall asleep at least one night a week, according to a recent Consumer Reports survey. And research has found that sleep problems are also on the rise among adolescents.

While the causes of Americas sleep woes are up for debate, theres little disagreement about Americas favorite remedy: Melatonin, the countrys most-used sleep aid.

Melatonin And Kids With Adhd

Attention deficit hyperactivity is commonly associated with sleep problems, just as sleep problems can cause attentional issues. As many as 70% of children with ADHD may have sleep problems. Sleep problems include difficulty falling asleep, abnormalities in sleep architecture , and daytime sleepiness. Trials of melatonin showed that it helped children with ADHD to fall asleep more quickly, although there was no evidence of improvement in attentional symptoms during the day. Side effects reported included problems with waking up at night and daytime sleepiness in some children. There is a nice review article here.

What is Melatonin? Melatonin for Kids and How to Sleep with Melatonin

The parenting website of the A.A.P. has warned of concerns that melatonin might affect puberty, but so far there isnt any solid evidence of this.

In a 2019 review of recent studies about melatonin and puberty, the authors found it difficult to draw strong conclusions. Only a few studies have examined the topic on a long-term basis, and these had small sample sizes, incomplete follow-up and poor measures of pubertal timing, the authors said.

There are other concerns, too. Side effects can include morning sleepiness, nightmares, agitation, headaches and increased urination at night. And melatonin could interact with certain medications. But in general, Dr. Owens said, its pretty well tolerated among her patients.

More worrisome is the lack of strict regulation of melatonin products. A 2017 study tested 31 different melatonin supplements and found most of the supplements did not have the same amount of melatonin listed on their labels. In addition, 26 percent of the supplements contained serotonin, a hormone that can have harmful effects even at relatively low levels.

I was so shocked by that, and it completely changed my recommendations to families, Dr. Owens said. She now recommends the brand Natrol because it has been used in clinical trials that evaluated its purity.

It had often been reported that the blind children face a lot of problem in sleeping and staying asleep. This is probably because the natural light that regulates the generation of melatonin cannot be perceived by them. Oral doses of melatonin have helped in maintaining the sleep wake cycle in children.

What Do Melatonin Supplements Do

People produce the hormone melatonin in the evening as a signal to the body that its time to go to sleep; higher levels of melatonin make people feel tired and ready for bed. If you give your child melatonin at the right time during the evening, it may make it easier for them to fall asleep.

Melatonin doesnt help everyone fall asleep, although many people do find it useful, says

Some research suggests that it may also be helpful for kids with ADHD or autism who struggle with sleep when used for short periods. However, long-term usage of melatonin supplements as sleep aids hasnt been well-studied in children.

Because melatonin is a type of dietary supplement, its production isnt regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. This means that any melatonin gummies that you purchase may contain more or less of the active ingredient than the label says. Always do research first and make sure to purchase supplements from reputable manufacturers that are lab-tested. Consult your childs doctor for advice. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, U.S. consumers should look for the USP Verified mark, which indicates that the products makeup meets the requirements of the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention, an independent global testing organization.

What To Know About Dietary Supplements And Safety

The FDA classifies melatonin as a dietary supplement, meaning that its regulated less strictly than a regular drug. For dietary supplements, label claims and product safety dont have to meet FDA approval before theyre marketed.

A 2017 study of 31 different melatonin supplements found that the actual melatonin content of 71 percent of the products didnt match the claim on the label. Additionally, 26 percent of products contained serotonin, which can be potentially harmful even in small doses.

When shopping for melatonin supplements, look for products that are USP verified. United States Pharmacopeia is an independent organization that works to ensure proper quality and dosing of dietary supplements.

If you experience side effects from melatonin, stop taking it and speak with your doctor. They may recommend using a lower dose or trying out an alternative medication or sleep aid.

Melatonin In Autism Effects On Sleep And Behavior

Introduction:Children with autism spectrum disorder often experience problems with getting to sleep as well as sleep maintenance. The consequences of this poor sleep quality may include alterations in daytime behavior, memory, and learning. One of the possible reasons for the sleep issues is disturbance in the manufacture of melatonin. Several clinical studies have also shown that melatonin supplementation at dosages ranging from 0.75 mg to 6 mg prior to bedtime produces significant benefit in improving sleep quality in ASD.

Background information:Abnormally low levels of melatonin in ASD have been documented in several studies. Melatonin plays a critical role in influencing the onset and length of sleep. A genetic defect in proteins signaled by melatonin has also been noted in these patients.

The clinical studies that have been conducted with melatonin in ASD include three double blind studies which all showed a significantly shorter time to fall asleep and longer sleep duration with melatonin at dosages of 2-5 mg compared to placebo.

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; In an open trial, after initiation of melatonin, 86% parents of autistic children reported either complete elimination or significant improvement of sleep disturbance. Of the 107 children treated with melatonin only 3 children had mild side effects .

These findings contribute to the growing medical literature on supplemental melatonin for sleep quality and behavior in ASD.

It Sounds Great Why Should I Worry About Melatonin

There are several areas for concern, specifically known and theoretical side effects, and problems with preparations.

A 2020 study of the PedPRM long acting melatonin formulation followed 80 children for 2 years, and did not show any evidence of effects on weight, height, body mass index, or Tanner staging .This is the best long term study of melatonin safety and is quite reassuring.;

Melatonin is considered relatively safe for short-term use and has few risks. However, some children who take melatonin supplements may experience mild symptoms. These symptoms may include bedwetting, drowsiness, headaches, and agitation.

Currently, there is little research on the long-term effects of melatonin use in children. Some experts question if melatonin, because it is a hormone, can affect other hormonal development in adolescents. Further research must be conducted to more clearly understand the long-term effects of melatonin on children.

Can You Overdose On Melatonin

While melatonin is generally considered safe, it is possible to take too much. There is no official recommended melatonin dosage, and people can have different sensitivities to melatonin, so finding an appropriate dose can be challenging. Moreover, because melatonin is not regulated in the U.S., the actual melatonin content of supplements can vary significantly. Studies have found that some melatonin products can have nearly five times as much melatonin as their label claims, or much less.

The first sign that youve taken too much melatonin is that youll continue feeling its soporific effects the following day. You may feel especially drowsy or groggy. Doses of 10 milligrams or higher can cause side effects like drowsiness and headache. Other symptoms of melatonin overdose include:

  • Changes in blood pressure
  • Vivid dreams or nightmares

Side Effects Of Melatonin Interactions

  • Sleepiness and drowsiness with sedative medication the interaction between;sedative medications;or depressants and melatonin can lead to excessive daytime sleepiness and drowsiness. It is essential you avoid taking melatonin with medications like lorazepam, clonazepam, zolpidem, etc.
  • Wakefulness with caffeine combining melatonin with caffeine may result in decreased melatonin effects. Caffeine will overpower melatonin, so instead of sleepy, one might feel more wakeful and alert.
  • Increased blood sugar with diabetes medication because melatonin increases blood sugar levels, and the diabetic medication lowers it, it can completely overpower the effectiveness of diabetes medication. This can lead to some serious issues in diabetic patients, who should avoid taking melatonin with insulin, glimepiride, glipizide, rosiglitazone, etc.
  • Bleeding risk with anticoagulants because melatonin slows down blood coagulation, it should be smart to avoid taking it together with medication that has the same effects. The combination of anticoagulants with melatonin may cause bleeding and bruising. Such medications include aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, enoxaparin, heparin, diclofenac, etc.
