Testosterone Deficiency And Ed

Testosterone deficiency and ED have been studied extensively . Testosterone deficiency causes ED using castrated animal models . Furthermore, the erectile function is discussed by the endothelial NO synthase and neuronal NOS signalings. In some studies, testosterone administration to the castrated animals improved NOS expression in the penis and restored the erectile function . Li et al. showed that testosterone deficiency decreases the upregulating reactive oxygen species production and it decreased eNOS activity . They also showed the reduction in eNOS activity induced cGMP levels decreased in the penis. Testosterone also alters phosphodiesterase type 5 expression in the penis. Traish et al. showed that testosterone deficiency decreases PDE-5 activity using the rabbit model . Additionally, Zhang et al. showed that PDE-5 expression was decreased by castration in the rat corpus cavernosum and that testosterone replacement therapy to the rats improved the expression . These results indicate that testosterone is important for regulating PDE-5 expression. Traish et al. also suggested testosterone regulates not only NOS but also PDE-5 .

Physiological Effects Of Sex Hormones On Athletic Performance

How Hormones Affect Acne

Testosterone therapy does not create a competitive advantage in sports for trans men compared to cis men.

However, there is controversy around whether trans women or women with high testosterone concentrations have a competitive advantage in elite athletic events.

To help define their inclusion criteria, the U.S. National College Association of Athletics Diversity and Inclusion Committee and NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports recently asked a small group of researchers – including Drs. Bradley Anawalt and Alvin Matsumoto – to prepare a report summarizing what is known about the physiological effects of sex hormones on athletic performance.

S For Taking Estrogen

Estrogen can be taken in a number of different ways. People receive estrogen through a pill, injection, patch, or even a topical cream. It’s not just a matter of preference. The route by which people take estrogen affects some of the risks of estrogen treatmentestrogen is absorbed by the body differently depending on how you take it.

Much of the research on the risks of estrogen treatment focus on oral estrogensthose taken by mouth. What research has found is that oral estrogen seems to cause an increased risk of a number of problematic side effects when compared to topical or injected estrogens. This is because of the effects of ingested estrogen on the liver when it passes through that organ during the process of digestion.

This is referred to as the hepatic first pass effect and it is not an issue for estrogen treatment that isn’t taken in pill form. The hepatic first pass effect causes changes in a number of physiological markers that affect cardiovascular health.

These changes may lead to an increase in blood clotting and reduced cardiovascular health. They are not seen as often, if at all, with non-oral estrogens. Therefore, non-oral estrogens may be a safer option.

Transfeminine People And Blockers

The fact that testosterone is more efficient at masculinizing someone than estrogen is at feminizing makes transitioning more difficult for transgender women. They can’t just take estrogen to develop more feminine characteristics.

They must also reduce their natural testosterone. This can be done using either testosterone blockers or surgery. The two testosterone blockers most often used for transgender women are spironolactone and cyproterone acetate.

Currently, cyproterone acetate is not used in the United States due to concerns about liver toxicity. However, it is widely used in Europe. Some transgender women who transition early using puberty blockers may remain on those blockers to suppress their testosterone once they start gender-affirming hormone therapy.

Leuprolide acetate is also sometimes used as a testosterone blocker. There are a variety of others as well.

When Can People Take It

The age at which people can access gender affirming hormone therapy varies globally.

For example, in Europe, many countries allow people aged 1418 to access it. However, in some countries, such as the Netherlands, people can access it from the age of 12 years with parental consent.

In some other European countries, access depends on the maturity of the person who would like to receive the therapy.

In the U.S., most people can access estrogen hormone therapy at the age of 18 years, when they are capable of consent. At 17 years old, a person may have access, but they will require a parent or guardian to accompany them to appointments. At the age of 16 years or younger, additional paperwork is necessary to access such therapy.

People using estrogen and anti-androgens as part of their hormone treatment may notice:

  • drier and thinner skin with smaller pores
  • changes in the odors of sweat and urine
  • a reduction in sweat production
  • the development of breast buds beneath the nipples that will develop into breasts as treatment progresses
  • a more feminine facial appearance
  • an increase in fat around the hips and thighs
  • a loss of muscle mass in the arms and legs
  • a reduction in strength

Research also indicates that cross-sex hormone treatment changes the structure of the brain to bring trans people closer to their identified gender.

These changes could potentially affect a persons verbal and spatial abilities and the way they interact with others.

Side Effects Of Hormone Therapy In Men

Many men find that the side effects are often worse at the start of treatment. They usually settle down after a few weeks or months.

The side effects you might have depend on the type of hormone therapy that you are having.

Some side effects are common to all hormone therapies. Some vary from drug to drug. You might not have all of these side effects.

Testosterone Blockers For Males Transitioning Tofemale

Testosterone blockers come in many forms and strengths butfall in either one of two categories.

  • There are testosterone blockersthat block the actions of the testosterone hormones in your body.
  • Testosterone blockers that preventthe production of testosterone all together.
  • Most testosterone blockers used in the male to femaletransition process is very safe, but some can have side effects.

The most used test blocker is spironolactone which is a prescription only medication. Though it is very effective, spironolactone can be very harsh on the body and comes with its fair share of adverse effects.

This prescription-based testosterone blocker can cause excessiveurination, dizzy or lightheadedness when taking it. Its very important thatyou consume at least twice your normal daily intake of water in order to keep aconstant flow of fluids through your body.

Spironolactone is dangerous for people with a prior history of kidney stones because it affects how your body reacts to blood pressure medications.

Spironolactone can also lead to a higher production ofpotassium in the body, which could cause heart failure.

While there is many risks associated with taking spironolactone, there is a healthy more effective and cheaper alternative testosterone blocker.

Naturally testosterone blockers, commonly referred to as Over the counter testosterone blocker have been proven to work time and time again over the years.

Diseases And Conditions That Affect Testosterone

Men can experience a drop in testosterone due to conditions or diseases affecting the:

    • Testes direct injury, castration, infection, radiation treatment, chemotherapy, tumors
    • Pituitary and hypothalamus glands tumors, medications , HIV/AIDS, certain infections and autoimmune conditions

Genetic diseases, such as and hemochromatosis can also affect testosterone.

Women may have a testosterone deficiency due to diseases of the pituitary, hypothalamus or adrenal glands, in addition to removal of the ovaries. Estrogen therapy increases sex hormone binding globulin and, like aging men, this reduces the amount of free, active testosterone in the body.

Hormones To Transition From Male To Female

Lets take a deeper more in depth look at some of the majorhormones necessary to make your transition from male to female smooth andsimple.

Before we get started, its important to note that male tofemale transition using hormone therapy is not an overnight, one and donething.

Instead, it is a long-termprocess that allows your body to produce hormones and re-enter a state similarto that of puberty to facilitates the changes you desire.

During puberty, your body takes several years to define your dominant features. Using MTF hormones is a method that tries to replicate the phases of puberty but to your liking.

The majority of people who seek to transition using medication are on the more eager side of things, but hormonal changes do not present themselves at a rapid pace.

Everyone is built differently, meaning that we all havedifferent genetic setups, therefore our bodies respond to hormones andtreatment at completely different rates. And because everyone is different, your medicines or dosages may vary widely from those of your friends, or whatyou may have read in books or online.

What Are The Benefits Of Taking Estrogen Pills

The First Step Toward Male Breast Enlargement: Know Your Hormones

When you are a man trying to grow breasts, the first thing you want to get to know are the various hormones involved in breast enlargement. This is because hormones are a proven way for men and women to develop bigger, fuller breasts.

This is why all of the male breast enlargement pills focus on increasing breast enhancing hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone, in the male body. By bringing about the hormonal conditions of an adolescent girl in the male body, hormones make it possible for men to grow female breasts.

Many of the breast enhancement pills on the market, however, concentrate on one hormone as the main cause of breast development.

This hormone is usually estrogen and whereas estrogen does play a huge part in male breast enlargement, you should know that there is more to the equation than estrogen alone.

Breast growth actually depends on a combination of hormones, all of which are essential for breast growth.

Lets explore some of the essential hormones involved in male breast enlargement and how they can help you grow male breasts.

Were Often Told That The Pill Contains Oestrogen And Progesterone But No Pill Contains Either Hormone

Were often told that the pill contains oestrogen and progesterone. But no pill contains either hormone.

That is because, when taken orally, oestrogen and progesterone break down too quickly to be practical. Instead, the pill contains synthetic versions, which are built from more stable hormones that have been altered to mimic the hormones.

Every brand of combined pill on the market contains the same type of synthetic oestrogen, ethinyl estradiol, and one of eight synthetic progesterones, called progestins. Ethinyl estradiol prevents the body from releasing an egg every month, while progestins thicken the mucus at the entrance to the cervix and conspire to make the womb inhospitable. Even if an egg slips out and becomes fertilised, it wont be able to settle down and start growing.

So far, so good. But though the hormones are effective at preventing pregnancy, they arent perfect matches for our natural hormones. The end result is that these synthetic versions also have effects that you would never get from raw progesterone.

Because the contraceptive pill uses synthetic versions of female hormones, it can have side effects you might not expect such as facial hair

Find out more: eight women open up about the side effects they struggled with from the pill in our recent video, below.

The male hormone that these pills use is a close relative of testosterone called nandrolone. A potent androgen , it can lead to the development of typically male characteristics.

    • Feeling more like myself when taking a hormone that aligns with gender identity feeling more comfortable in ones body

What Hormones Are Used For Male To Female Transition

Hormone replacement therapy: Who needs to take what?

Lupron, spironolactone, bicalutamide, flutamide, finasteride are normally prescribed hormones for a male to female transition.

Lupron is given intramuscularly every sixty days to block total testosterone levels. This is an expensive treatment and insurance rarely pays for this.

Finasteride reverses male pattern baldness because it blocks dihydrotestosterone , it does not block overall testosterone.

We recommend using Transfemme® to cause your testosterone to aromatize into estrogen naturally to create MTF estradiol.

What happens when a man takes female hormones?

Female hormones can cause side effects in men, before taking prescription drugs you should carefully decide if these risks are acceptable and how much risk you may have based on age, weight, family history. The effects of estrogen on the male body are significant and the benefits should outweigh the risks when considering altering your hormones with prescription hormones. What happens when a man takes female hormones? The risks include high blood pressure, high blood sugar, inflammation, higher C-Reactive Protein, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, and weight gain, all of which can cause heart disease. Excessive prolactin or the formation of noncancerous tumors in your pituitary gland that causes prolactinoma. Blood clots called deep vein thrombosis or a pulmonary embolism, blood clots can also cause strokes.
