What To Do In Case Of An Overdose
Management of melatonin overdose usually depends on how severe the condition is. The most severe manifestation of melatonin overdose is shortness of breath and difficulty in breathing.
The first thing to do in the event of an overdose is to take your dog to the veterinary officer without delay to receive prompt treatment.
If your dog is so overwhelmed that his/her breathing is failing, the veterinarian will first focus on making the dog stable before commencing any further treatment.

Melatonin is most commonly used to treat skin disorders in dogs. It can be used as a sleep aid but it is quite an artifical way to induce sleep. If your dog is suffering from confusion in her senior years then this could be cognitive dysfunction and I strongly recommend you consider using a brain supplement instead. Our own brand RenewMe would work well for this. Giving Melatonin for your particular dog may just cover the underlying issue and not help treat it.

Can You Give Dogs Melatonin Made For Humans
While there are separate human and veterinary formulations of melatonin, the active ingredient is the same. This means its generally safe to give dogs melatonin made for humans.

As a result, researchers recommend older adults start with the lowest dose of melatonin possible. Lower doses may help older adults sleep better without disrupting their circadian rhythms and causing prolonged drowsiness.
Older adults with dementia should avoid melatonin, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

But Is Melatonin Safe For Dogs
While melatonin is considered very safe for dogs, it is always advised that you talk to your veterinarian prior to starting any new medications or supplements to ensure that it does not interact with any other medications your pet may be on, Dr. Nelson urges.
