Can Too Much Estrogen Cause Palpitations

5 ways to stop heart palpitations during menopause

A study showed that exposure to estrogen disruptive components found in plastics can cause arrhythmia.

After the age of 40 we can expect hormonal disturbances because the production of sex hormones begins to decrease.

Sometimes what creates unpleasant palpitations and other characteristic complaints is the rise of estrogen not the decrease of it.

Why is there too much estrogen if our ovaries production is overall decreasing in perimenopause?

Estrogen is mostly produced by the ovaries but after these cease to function we still have a small estrogen production by our adrenal glands. Apart from these, there can be at least three ways in which our body can end up with more unwanted estrogen despite the decline in natural production.

  • Estrogen is produced and stored in our fat cells. The more extra pounds we put on, the more estrogen we will accumulate in the body.
  • Another way to dangerously increase your estrogen level is going through lifestyle choices that expose you to xenoestrogens. These are endocrine disruptive chemicals that once they find their way into your body, they mimic estrogen responses and perturb the natural functions of your body.

You can find them all around your daily activities, from your makeup and your plastic coffee cup to pesticides and chemicals.

How Do You Stop Heart Palpitations

It can be scary to notice unusual sensations in your chest. If your heart wont stop pounding, or you feel an irregular heartbeat, does it mean that you are having a heart attack or heart failure?

While palpitations can be a sign of a heart condition, it is best to talk to a doctor for an accurate diagnosis. The truth is that heart palpitations can also be caused by a variety of other health conditions. In this article, you will learn about the cause of heart palpitations, and what should be done when you are experiencing palpitations.

Midlife Women With Insomnia Depression And Higher Stress Are More Likely To Experience Palpitations

Carpenter and colleagues published a study in the December 2020 issue of the Journal of Womens Health that looked at 759 women who were perimenopausal and postmenopausal and had vasomotor symptoms, meaning that they were experiencing hot flashes 14 or more times a week and the hot flashes were bothersome or severe on four or more days or nights per week.

Investigators found that on average about 1 in 4 women reported palpitation distress which they could rate from not at all to a lot of bother. Although the palpitations were fairly common, they didnt cause severe distress in a lot of women, says Dr. Lewey, who was not involved in this research. Only about 5 percent of women said that they had moderate distress and 1.5 percent said they had severe distress from the palpitations, she says.

That may seem like a small percentage of women, but if you consider the hundreds of thousands of women going through some stage of perimenopause or the menopausal transition every year, this symptom does actually impact a large number of women, according to Lewey.

This study does a nice job of characterizing the problem and how common it is. I think a lot of women don’t expect to have heart palpitations as a symptom of perimenopause or menopause, and they can be surprised and sometimes scared when it does happen, she says.

Heart Symptoms Often Minimized In Women

Its not totally clear why heart palpitations in perimenopausal or menopausal women are understudied and underrecognized compared with other menopausal symptoms, says Carpenter. It could partly be due to the fact that theres been a historic bias against women in cardiology. Womens symptoms often arent believed or listened to in the same way that mens symptoms are, she says.

At the same time, symptoms of menopause have often been trivialized as no big deal, she says. Heart palpitations are at this intersection of these two things. If people have been attributing the palpitations to menopause there may be a general feeling that these will probably go away, dont worry about it, she says.

  • And What Causes Heart Palpitations

If you feel your heart racing or missing an occasional beat, you could be experiencing menopause heart palpitations. The reason for this is because estrogen levels naturally decline during perimenopause and menopause.

And lower levels of estrogen lead to an overstimulation of the heart, which can cause palpitations. For instance, on average, menopause heart palpitations increase heart rates by 8 to 16 beats per minute. In more extreme cases, some women reported heart rates reaching up to 200 beats per minute.

The Feeling Of Heart Palpitations Vary From Person To Person But Often Make Your Heart Feel Like It Is:

    • Beating in irregular patterns
    • Skipping heartbeats

The most common way to describe a heart palpitation is the feeling you get after sprinting up a long flight of stairs. When you reach the top, you are breathing heavy, you can feel your heart pounding, and you might hear the beating in your ears. This sensation usually passes in a few seconds, but it might be a cause for concern if the heart palpations dont go away on their own.

Heart palpitations can occur when you are active or when you are resting. They can be connected to a specific activity or trigger, or the palpitations might happen for no identified reason.

Most people only have palpitations every once in a while. But some patients experience palpitations throughout the day, resulting in discomfort that can feel as strong as a heart attack.

When A Heart Palpitation Can Be Serious

Scary heart palpitations in menopause and how to stop them!

The concern meter depends on two big factors: how often youre getting them, and how long they last for.

If you’re having short heart palpitationssay, ones that last continuously for less than two or three minutes or ones that come and go during that time spanonce a week or less, thats no reason to rush to the doctor.

But if theyre occurring more frequently than that, make an appointment, Dr. Fenster advises.

Head to the ER for ones that occur with symptoms like chest discomfort, shortness of breath, dizziness, or feeling like you’re about to pass out, says cardiologist Robert Applebaum, M.D., an assistant professor of medicine at the NYU School of Medicine.

The concern with these prolonged or frequent palpitations, with or without symptoms, is that they could be signaling a serious arrhythmia, a change in the electrical impulses that govern your hearts rhythm that results in an abnormal beating pattern, he says.

We worry about things like atrial fibrillation, where the heart is beating irregularly a lot, which could put someone at risk for stroke, says Dr. Applebaum.

Thats because when your heart does not produce a regular, strong enough contraction, blood may pool in a chamber of your heart, leading to clots. Then, these clots can be pumped to the brain, where they block off blood flow, potentially causing a stroke.

    What Are Palpitations

Palpitations are characterized as a general or heightened awareness of your own heartbeat whether its too fast, too slow, or otherwise irregular. You might feel like your heart is thumping, racing, or fluttering. And you could feel this sensation in your chest or your neck.

I ask them to tap out what their heartbeat feels like. Then I get a sense of whether were dealing with isolated skipped beats or a more sustained arrhythmia, says Marine. Patients frequently will feel their skipped beats more at night, when theyre lying in bed and nothing is distracting them from it.

    What Our Patients Say

As of March 2021, I have been a HerKare patient for 3 years. I have driven from the Austin to Ft. Worth and Southlake since March 2018. In fact, today I attempted to drive to Southlake to see the provider, Dania Khoncarly, because she is so amazing, but the roads were too dangerous with the current ice storm in Texas, so I visited the Mansfield location instead as it was closer for me. The patient care has been nothing short of amazing. In fact, I cant imagine my life without HerKare. I struggled with hormone deficiency since 2003 until March 2018. The treatment plan provided by HerKare has positively impacted my way of life socially, emotionally, and physically. One of my closest friends now drives from Copperas Cove to the Mansfield location. I have several friends in my age group mid to late 40s & early 50s who would benefit from HerKare. I understand with our nation experiencing COVID, now might not be the time to open a new location, however, your services could positively impact the well-being of so many women. When the time is right, please open more HerKare locations!

Anxiety Disorders: Know The Different Types And Symptoms

The past few months have been challenging. As a result, many of us, including children, parents, and seniors, are experiencing feelings of anxiety and uncertainty.

Occasional anxiety over recent events, on top of additional personal stress, is normal. However, the feelings of anxiety caused by an anxiety disorder, do not go away and can worsen over time. These feelings of anxiety can interfere with your daily life and may be difficult to control.

Knowing the difference between normal fears or worries and anxiety disorders is important and can help you recognize them and seek treatment.

    Spiritual And Holistic Options

Heart palpitations often cease as soon as women begin taking progesterone cream or estrogen, stop caffeine, and also normalize their blood sugar and insulin levels through a change of diet. But finding out what your heart is yearning for is also important. A woman I know found that her heart palpitations stopped soon after she asked for a promotion, something she hadnt had the courage to do before. She got the promotion and now finds her work more fulfilling than ever. Her heart no longer has to speak so loudly.

At midlife, all the issues that have been occurring premenstrually and which perhaps had been avoided until now come up and hit us between the eyes rather relentlessly, demanding attention. Though women with palpitations often insist that a thorough examination of their lives hasnt turned up any personal issues bothering them, my experience has been that our bodies speak to us only when we cant seem to hear them any other way. When issues of love, issues of the soul, or issues of a womans unmet passions cry out for attention, they often take the form of heart palpitations. If we are willing to be open to their meaning, we will be giving our hearts a chance to be heard. If we act on what we hear, the symptom often goes away.

Women with this condition may also find it helpful to avoid scary, violent, or emotionally draining news, movies, books, or people.

    Drink Plenty Of Water

We can look at water. Remember, dehydration will cause all sorts of things, so get plenty of water into your system on a regular basis. And some women find that if they feel the palpitations coming on, if they get into that situation where they go, “Oh, here we go,” that drinking some water at the very start of it can help to reduce its impact on you as well.

    How To Overcome Palpitations

How To Get Rid of Heart Palpitations (Natural Remedies)

Heart palpitations during menstrual cycle are completely benign, and are caused by hormonal fluctuations.

They can be eased by taking into consideration some simple advises:

    1. Reducing caffeine intake, because it can worsen the palpitations

    2. Limiting the consumption of stimulants such as nicotine and alcohol because they worsen palpitations

    3. Practicing relaxation techniques such as yoga or breathing exercise, to reduce stress and control the mood swings, which might trigger palpitations.

If palpitations are accompanied with other symptoms like chest pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, going to the doctor is an urgent matter, because they can be symptoms of life-threatening diseases such as heart attack.

How I Healed My Heart Palpitations Overnight

I have been reading this year in Rosemary Gladstars Herbal Recipes For Vibrant Health. This book has a lot of great information on panic attacks, anxiety, depression, and healing the nervous system.

This paragraph in her book caught my attention:

Symptoms of mental distress or disorders such as irritability, nervousness, panic attacks, excess fear, depression, or suicidal tendancies often indicate a B-vitamin deficiency.B vitamins are most effective taken as a complex.

Dealing with mental or emotional distress often calls for healing it from several different angles. I was already drinking a nerve tonic , but after reading about B-vitamin deficiency, I knew I needed to add it to my regime. I purchased Garden of Life Raw B Complex. Buy the complex here.

The morning after taking a dose of the B Complex, my heart palpitations were completely gone, and they have not returned since. For me, I was already working on my nervous system and adrenals, so a B-vitamin complex was the missing key. I am still taking a B-vitamin complex daily as I continue to heal my nervous system.

If you dont find relief by taking B-vitamins, dont give up it doesnt mean you cant heal naturally. Be sure to addherbs that help the nervous system.

What You Can Do In The Meantime

Before your appointment, you can try to improve your symptoms by avoiding activities or stresses that might cause your palpitations. Some common triggers include:

    • Anxiety or panic attacks
    • Too much caffeine or alcohol
    • Use of medications or supplements that contain stimulants, such as energy drinks or some cold medicines

    Hormones And Irregular Heart Beats

Estrogen and progesterone levels rise and fall in women with a normal menstrual cycle during the days of the month. The rise of progesterone and the fall of estrogen correspond with:

    • More frequent episodes of supraventricular tachycardia
    • More symptoms associated with SVT
    • SVT of longer duration¹

During perimenopause , there is a marked decrease in ovarian estrogen production. This is associated with an increase in heart rate and an increased frequency in palpitations and non-threatening arrhythmias, such as premature ventricular contractions or PVCs.

Menopause causes a further decline in estrogen as the menstrual cycle stops. This time period is associated with irregular heart beats, palpitations, spasmodic chest pain and nightmares in women 40 -64 years old².

The Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study found no benefit in the use of hormone replacement therapy to reduce cardiovascular events, and hormone replacement therapy may even increase the risk of thromboembolism during the first year³. HRT is also associated with lengthening the QT interval , although the relevance of this finding is not known. On the other hand, HRT may decrease palpitations and other symptoms such as hot flashes, insomnia, and sweating. Therefore, it may be considered a treatment option in low risk female patients to relieve symptoms of palpitations.
