Ways To Help With Hormonal Acne

Insulin Plays A Part In Acne Too

How I Cured My Adult Hormonal Cystic Acne Naturally (no accutane)

Another hormone that aggravates acne is insulin. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that allows your body to use sugar from carbohydrates in the food that you eat for energy or to store glucose for future use. Insulin acts like a growth hormone on the testosterone producing cells in the ovary. When these cells are overloaded by insulin, as with a high carbohydrate lifestyle, the result is an imbalance that aggravates acne, as well as unwanted facial hair and facial ruddiness. Estrogen-based birth control pills help suppress acne because estrogen reduces pore size and suppresses excess testosterone. However, if ones diet is sugar laden, even the pill will not work for acne.

What Causes Cystic Acne

Pores in the skin can clog with excess oil and dead skin cells, causing pimples. Bacteria can enter the skin pores and get trapped along with the oil and skin cells. The skin reaction causes swelling deep in the skins middle layer . This infected, red, swollen lump is an acne cyst.

Cystic acne causes include:

  • Family history of cystic acne.
  • Hormone changes during the teenage years and sometimes during menopause, and stress.

What Vitamins Help Fight Hormonal Acne

  • DIM is an anti-inflammatory nutrient found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower
  • Vitamin D if you have a deficiency
  • Oralzinc supplements can also support overall skin health

According to Renteln, any natural treatment or supplement is most effective in a one-two punch with dermatologist-approved medication. This might include:

  • Topical or oral retinoids
  • Antiandrogen therapy, such as spironolactone

Osmosis Skin Defense Vs Skin Accumax

Skin Accumax has an advanced nutrition programme filled with extensive research and their supplements have been developed for over 15 years. The supplements are free of potentially harsh chemicals, vegan and for those with possible allergies, are GMO, wheat, yeast and soy-free, so they really are accessible to everyone. Their ingredients are constantly being tested, improved and sustainably sourced to ensure they provide maximal effects for your skin. As everything Skin Accumax uses is natural with vitamins and nutrients we find in our diet and the foods around us, the risk is far less than for example using medications as a form of hormonal acne treatment. Especially when each of our bodies is so unique, when it comes to medications it can be a difficult process of trial and error to see what your body will accept or reject. However, with Skin Accumax that worry can be diminished as you know what is going into your body and can be left all rest assured.

Up until recently Skin Accumax was the leading natural supplement for treating acne, but Osmosis Skin Defense is far more effective.

Osmosis Skin Defense contains 400mg DIM, which is 10 times more potent than Skin Accumax. As its 100% naturally found in broccoli, its safe to use and in this case more is better. Osmosis Skin Defense helps clear your skin from acne fast and effective.

Why Do Androgens Such As Testosterone Cause Acne

Pin on Skin Things

Androgens cause changes in the skin and directly drive inflammation. Here are the three reasons why androgens cause acne:

  • The sebaceous glands are very rich in androgen receptors. As soon as androgens meet their receptors, the sebaceous glands produce more sebum. This causes greasiness of the skin and a build up of sebum in the pores. The sebaceous glands are also where the precursors are converted to Testosterone and DHT.
  • Androgens may also be important in clogging hair follicles and causing comedones to be formed.
  • HEA-S is a stimulator of inflammation. It causes T cells in the skin to produce IL2 and drives inflammation leading to acne spots.
  • This diagram shows the complex effects of androgens in the skin that cause acne:

    Can You Prevent Hormonal Acne

Since you can’t stop your hormones, lifestyle tweaks are the best way to prevent these types of breakouts. Below, find some of Rouleau’s best advice for preventing it:

    • Take Vitamin B6. Start one week before your menstrual cycle begins. “This supplement helps ease PMS symptoms by improving metabolic function and hormone metabolism, as well as increasing serotonin to help cope with stress,” she says.
    • Eliminate dairy intake. The esthetician points out that breakouts along the jawline are typically a sign of excess dairy in a person’s diet. “The theory is that the hormone levels in milk from pregnant cows play a role in excess sebum production, producing acne,” she explains. To see results, Rouleau says to cut out dairy for at least three weeks.
    • Take oral probiotics. “Breakouts can sometimes occur due to changes in our gut bacteria, which inflames the skin. Oral probiotics can help regulate bacteria and reduce oil levels in the gut,” she says.
    • Track your routines. Finding potential patterns and triggers can be easier when you see a calendar of your daily habits and lifestyle choices, such as diet, stressors, and sleep. Rouleau suggests doing this for three months to get a clear picture.

What About Conventional Hormonal Acne Treatments

Conventional hormonal acne treatment is indicated if YOU feel you need it theres no medical reason to use it. Its a personal choice. If youre at the point of trying pharmaceuticals which theres no shame in. While Id love you to try natural remedies first, if youre not seeing improvement and severe hormonal acne is taking a toll on your quality of life, other treatments can make a really positive difference. If youre at that point, I recommend starting with topical retinoids and azelaic and benzoyl peroxide, which are generally safe topical options.

Struggling with hormonal acne can affect all aspects of your well-being and you shouldnt have to feel resigned to living with the emotional toll it carries. While it can take time, treating hormonal acne from the inside-out as your hormones find their natural, happy balance will allow your skin to truly heal. But no matter what know you are beautiful. Really.

When those three things become irritated, acne forms.

Is Hormonal Acne Caused By Pregnancy

    How To Treat Hormonal Acne

When you are pregnant, hormonal fluctuations can cause acne. Often, acne gets better as your pregnancy progresses. How Long Does It Take To Treat Hormonal Acne

While you may notice changes within one cycle, its important to give yourself 8 to 12 weeks to really begin to see the benefits if you dont see them immediately. It takes a minute to resolve inflammation, balance blood sugar, and reset hormone balance. But as your hormone balance improves, so will your skin.

Testosterone And Acne: Are They Connected

Yes, testosterone and acne are connected. Hormonal acne usually occurs in response to a rise in certain hormones, especially testosterone. During puberty, the production of testosterone increases and can prompt hormonal acne in teenagers. Rising testosterone may stimulate more sebum production from glands in the skin. Then, excessive sebum combines with dirt and dead skin cells, clogging the skin pores. The infection of these clogged pores by acne-causing bacteria may lead to pimples. Your bodys immune system may react to the bacteria and its metabolites and produce inflammation, which looks like redness alongside acne lesions.

Acne during menopause can occur because of hormonal fluctuations. People who develop acne around menopause usually have normal androgen levels but reduced levels of estrogen. Due to this imbalance, sebum production increases, and acne may flare.

For some people, hormone replacement therapy can actually trigger acne.

The 5 Supplements That Healed My Acne Naturally

How To Treat Hormonal Acne Naturally

Please welcome my sister Kelsey to the blog. She put together this guest post on how she healed her ownacne using real foods!

I am one of those unlucky folks that dealt with lingering acne well into my twenties. Now I am not just talking about a small pimple here and there, I am talking about moderate acne that created multiple bumps underneath my skin that caused inflammation in my cheeks and forehead. I was embarrassed that I had to deal with such a thing when all my friends had clear skin. I tried so hard to hide the scars and bumps, but despite the layers of makeup that I applied I could never quite do it. Eventually I was unwilling to go out with friends. To some this may seem a little bit silly, but after five years and no luck of successful treatment I was self conscious and tired of it. Luckily, with the help of an integrative dermatologist and my sister, I was able to come up with a regimen of supplements for acne that changed my skin for the better. Here are the supplements that immensely helped my skin and overall health.

Take Oral Acne Medication Or Birth Control

If there are no additional concerns, hormonal acne is relatively easy to treat. We typically start treatment with a birth control pill containing estrogen and progesterone. The FDA has approved several contraceptive medications specifically for acne in women.

Unfortunately, the convenient forms of birth control do not help with hormonal acne. These are only progesterone-based, which can make acne even worse. If a patient is already using one of these devices, well use an alternative treatment rather than ask them to change their birth control method.

Spironolactone is often our first choice for patients not wanting or needing birth control. A low-dosage form of this oral pill is a highly effective method to get rid of hormonal acne.

It blocks the androgen receptors in the skin that are responding to the testosterone by increasing our oil production and making us breakout. Spironolactone essentially blocks the skin from hearing the testosterone say, Hey, make a pimple! Its tolerated well by patients and can be used for long periods of time . Its a highly effective option that often eliminates the need for patients to eventually take Accutane.

What Are The Possible Side Effects

To reduce the risk of a woman developing serious side effects, dermatologists carefully screen their patients before prescribing hormonal therapy. Possible side effects include the following.

The pill. Taking the pill increases the risk of:

    • High blood pressure

While these side effects may not seem worth the risk, most women who are healthy do not have side effects. In fact, the risk of developing blood clots is greater during pregnancy and just after having a baby than when taking the pill.

Its also important to know that there is less risk of serious side effects today than in past. Today, the pill contains less estrogen.

Some women taking the pill develop melasma, or dark patches on their face. Protecting your face from the sun can help prevent these patches.

Breakthrough bleeding is another possible side effect. You can often prevent this by taking the pill at the same time each day.

    Acne and the pill

If you take the pill, you can reduce your risk of blood clots by staying active, drinking lots of water, and not smoking.

Spironolactone. When taking spironolactone without a birth control pill, the most common side effects are:

    • Painful periods and cramping

    • Breast enlargement

These side effects may be decreased when women also take the pill.

Other possible side effects of taking spironolactone include fatigue, headache, and dizziness. These rarely cause a woman to stop taking the medication.

    How To Treat Hormonal Acne

“Preventing hormonal acne might seem like a tall orderit is caused by your hormones, after all but there are a few things you can do, says Love. It requires some lifestyle changes. These breakouts are coming from an imbalance of hormones in the body, so you need to get to the root of the cause to determine the right hormonal acne treatment. Ahead, dermatologists share their best tips for how to help treat hormonal acne.

We recommend this at-home hormone level test to monitor any hormone imbalances.

“When it comes to hormonal acne, the body inhabits a strong sensitivity to androgens, more specifically testosterone,” says SkinOwl founder Annie Tevelin. Studies estimate that approximately 50 percent women aged 20 to 29 experience hormonal acne. To make sure hormones are the root cause, Tevelin suggests you “run an in-depth hormone panel blood test and test it throughout the month to make sure your hormone levels are stable.” Because the hormonal cascade fluctuates depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle, she suggests testing several times throughout the month.

Antioxidant Vitamins: Vitamin A And E

    Healing My Hormonal Acne NATURALLY

Vitamin A and E are both fat-soluble antioxidant vitamins that can protect against free radical damage and the inflammatory process that contributes to acne. Low blood levels of these nutrients have been found in individuals with acne when compared to control groups. Vitamin A and E supplementation may regulate keratinization, and research suggests these vitamins have a synergistic effect, meaning that they may be more effective when combined.

    Supplements To Help Clear Acne

When it comes to chronic acne, supplements can often be necessary because the body is already in need of extra help and support.

Here are some supplements that can help, and depend on the root cause of your acne:

    -Vitamin E

    -Maca

    -Saw Palmetto

Its crucial to remember that a supplement is just that- a supplement. Its important to eat nutrient dense foods and then use supplements as an addition to your diet for nutrients you may be deficient in or need more of.

As well, depending on the person, supplement needs vary widely.

It can be REALLY helpful to get a blood test done to test for nutrient levels so you can see if you are deficient in any nutrients!

Now I just want to briefly touch on what to look for when purchasing supplements!

When you are looking for a high-quality supplement, these are some things you should look for:

-manufactured at a Good Manufacturing Practices facility

    -no artificial colorings

    -no fillers

-preferably derived from whole foods and natural sources instead of synthetic chemicals

Keep in mind that you should consult with a healthcare provider before you start taking a supplement, especially if you are pregnant or nursing.
