First Time Taking Birth Control And Having Horrible Acne Advice

Hi, I have had acne problems for a while now. In an effort to clear up my skin, I decided to go on birth control for the first time in my life . I mentioned my reasons to my gynecologist, and she prescribed Lo Loestrin Fe. I started it on the first day of my period about 2.5 weeks ago.

Well, taking this stuff has definitely made my acne worse. I now have it on my back, chest, neck , and behind my ears as well as my chin. And I didn’t have any on my body before, just my face. And my skin has this very irritated, greasy, itchy feeling all the time . So I’m feeling very depressed about this since it is the exact opposite effect I wanted. I’m not even having sex, so I don’t need to worry about getting pregnant if I stop.

So my questions are: do you think I should stick it out for a while to see if I just need to get used to it? Have other people had acne problems worsen on birth control or this particular brand ? If it’s recommended that I stop taking this, how should I go about doing that ? I kind of wanted to stop it now, but I’ve heard warnings about stopping mid-cycle or going on/off birth control too quickly?

I don’t know if it matters, but I also have multiple sclerosis and take Copaxone, an injectable medicine, every day as well as Zoloft.

Thank you for any advice!

Its Actually Used For Doping In Men Sometimes Belinda Pletzer

Its actually used for doping in men sometimes, says Belinda Pletzer, a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Salzburg, Austria. It helps build muscle, so its popular with powerlifters and boxers: the former heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury recently served a two-year suspension after testing positive for the steroid in 2015

The hormone used by the pill is a close relative of an androgen that male boxers have used for doping

Weve known about these side effects for decades: the first progestin ever made, norethindrone, was androgenic.

Back in the 1940s, 50s and 60s, pregnant women sometimes took norethindrone in large doses to help prevent miscarriage. But the hormone also caused some unsettling changes to their bodies.

The women were sweatier, hairier and spottier. Some noticed that their voices had deepened. Nearly one in five baby girls born to mothers taking it had masculinised genitals. Some of these unlucky children required surgery.

Today androgenic progestins are much less androgenic. The doses in contraceptive pills are much smaller, and the hormones are usually combined with synthetic oestrogen, which cancels out many of the masculine effects on our bodies.

But there are some side effects.

More recent types of contraceptive pill are designed to be anti-androgenic, often prescribed to treat acne or excessive hair growth

What Is The Best Birth Control Pill For Women Over 40

Lo Loestrin Fe Drug for Contraception: Side Effects, Dosage, & Usage

Though technically there is no one “best” birth control pill according to age, there are certain considerations you can think about that relate to women over 40.

Unless your doctor advises against it, you should be able to take birth control pills in your 40s and early 50s. Though fertility rates go down after 40, if a woman is still getting her period, she can get pregnant.

Experts say that a lower-dose combined birth control pill may be a good fit for women over 40, especially since it can provide other benefits during perimenopause for symptoms like irregular periods, excessive menstrual bleeding, or the start of hot flashes. There is no restriction on taking the mini-pill for this age group as well, for women who should avoid taking estrogen-containing pills.

How Birth Control Pills Work

The hormones estrogen and progesterone signal your body to produce eggs and prepare for pregnancy.

If a sperm doesnt fertilize the egg, the levels of these hormones fall steeply. In response, your uterus sheds the lining that had built up. This lining is shed during your period.

Birth control pills contain either a combination of synthetic estrogen and synthetic progesterone or synthetic progesterone alone. This manmade version of progesterone is also known as progestin.

Estrogen and progestin work in different ways to prevent pregnancy. Both work to prevent the pituitary gland from producing hormones that trigger ovulation.

Progestin also thickens your cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach any released eggs. Progestin thins the uterine lining as well. This makes it harder for an egg to implant there if the sperm fertilizes it.

Common brands of low-dose birth control pills include:

  • Aviane
  • Levlen 21
  • Levora
  • Lo Loestrin Fe
  • Lo/Ovral
  • Ortho-Novum
  • Yasmin
  • Yaz

Lo Loestrin Fe is actually considered an ultra-low-dose pill, as it only contains 10 mcg of estrogen.

There are multiple benefits of taking a low-dose combination pill:

  • Your periods are likely to be more regular.
  • Your periods may be lighter.
  • Any menstrual cramping you have may be less severe.

Why Is This Medication Prescribed

Oral contraceptives are used to prevent pregnancy. Estrogen and progestin are two female sex hormones. Combinations of estrogen and progestin work by preventing ovulation . They also change the lining of the uterus to prevent pregnancy from developing and change the mucus at the cervix to prevent sperm from entering. Oral contraceptives are a very effective method of birth control, but they do not prevent the spread of human immunodeficiency virus and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Some brands of oral contraceptives are also used to treat acne in certain patients. Oral contraceptives treat acne by decreasing the amounts of certain natural substances that can cause acne.

Some oral contraceptives are also used to relieve the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder in women who have chosen to use an oral contraceptive to prevent pregnancy.
