How I Cured My Adult Hormonal Cystic Acne Naturally (no accutane)

While you may notice changes within one cycle, its important to give yourself 8 to 12 weeks to really begin to see the benefits if you dont see them immediately. It takes a minute to resolve inflammation, balance blood sugar, and reset hormone balance. But as your hormone balance improves, so will your skin.

Is Menopausal Acne A Form Of Hormonal Acne

Many women begin to experience menopause in their 40s and 50s. This causes a natural decline in your reproductive hormones, resulting in an end to menstruation.

Some women experience acne during menopause. This is likely due to a drop in estrogen levels or an increase in androgen hormones like testosterone.

You may still experience menopausal acne even if youre using hormone replacement therapies to ease your menopause symptoms. This is because some HRTs use an influx of the hormone progestin to replace the estrogen and progesterone your body loses. Introducing this hormone to your system can cause your skin to break out.

In most cases, prescription medication can clear up menopausal acne. Some women may find success using natural treatment methods. Talk to your doctor about which options may be right for you.

Your Diet May Be The Culprit

Food is one of the primary contributors to fluctuating or increased hormone levels in our bodies.

The typical American diet is acidic and high in saturated fats, processed grains, meat fats, and refined sugar. It is also low in fresh vegetables, fruit, fish, fiber, and antioxidants. Research has shown that this can cause an imbalance in testosterone and androgen levels, respectively. Therefore, a healthy diet is one form of natural treatment for hormonal acne. Another way to balance hormone levels is by taking certain herbs and vitamins. Both these items are discussed in more detail below.

Hormonal Acne: Diet Dos And Donts

The exact role between diet and hormonal acne isnt fully understood. Some foods may help prevent acne particularly inflammation-fighting foods.

Plant-based foods high in antioxidants may help reduce inflammation and promote clearer skin. Omega-3 fatty acids may also decrease skin inflammation.

Contrary to popular belief, junk food alone doesnt cause acne. But overdoing it on certain foods may lead to increased inflammation.

You may consider limiting the following:

  • refined carbs, such as white bread and pasta

To clear up hormonal acne and keep it at bay its important to establish an appropriate skincare routine.

Does Hormonal Acne Ever Go Away

Many patients search for different methods to treat hormonal acne. Though a regiment of proper facial hygiene and over-the-counter products can be useful, most patients turn to Dr. Green to help with the reduction and prevention of hormonal acne. In general, patients experience fluctuations between clear skin and hormonal acne flare-ups, a cycle that can unfortunately last for years. In order to quell these unwelcome zits and acne breakouts, targeted skin care products, spot treatments, cosmetic procedures, and oral medications can make a huge difference.

Tweak Your Diet To Reduce Inflammation

Im a sugar addict. I wish I could eat pizza and cake all day. Every day.

My body has other ideas. Sugar promotes inflammation. Inflammation is bad on so many levels. Its what causes deadly diseases like cancer and Alzeheimers. It makes you age faster. And it increases your risk of breakouts.

Now, dont get me wrong. Theres no way this Italian is ever gonna give up pizza for good . But, Ive seriously cut back on grains and sugar.

Instead, Ive upped my fat intake. Im eating more foods rich in omega-3, such as salmon, avocado and walnuts. Ive added more probiotics, such as kefir and Greek yogurt. I have my fair share of vegs with every meal.

And, then, once in a while, I have a cheat day when I eat pizza at dinner and snack on chocolate. A healthy diet is about moderation, not deprivation.

Personally, Ive found this has the biggest impact on my hormonal acne. Its easy to eat a balanced diet at home, but when I travel, I cheat a little too often.

I dont feel too guilty about it. In the grand scheme of things, eating more sugar for a week every few months wont kill me. But, I find it makes pimples more prone to come back during that time of the month.

If I want clear skin, a low glycemic diet is the way to go.

Consider Your Diet To Avoid A Hormonal Imbalance

How to treat hormonal acne has a lot to do with your diet, namely the consumption of dairy. “Studies have shown that dairy can worsen acne,” says Jeremy Fenton, MD, of Schweiger Dermatology Group. “Dairy has been shown to stimulate testosterone production in people who consume it, and spikes in testosterone can worsen acne. Dairy also naturally contains its own hormones, such as estrogen, which can exert their own impact on a person’s hormonal balance.” The worst culprit, believe it or not, isskim milk and fat-free dairy. Fenton explains that removing fat from the dairy concentrates its food items and causes them to be absorbed by the body faster, meaning hormonal spikes occur more quickly.

Foods high in sugar are another culprit to blame. “I would recommend avoiding refined flour, sweets, and processed carbohydrates,” says Fenton. “The exact mechanism isn’t known for certain, but we believe that these refined carbs lead to an insulin spike, which causes a hormonal cascade that can increase inflammation and oil production.”

“Preventing hormonal acne might seem like a tall orderit is caused by your hormones, after all but there are a few things you can do, says Love. It requires some lifestyle changes. These breakouts are coming from an imbalance of hormones in the body, so you need to get to the root of the cause to determine the right hormonal acne treatment. Ahead, dermatologists share their best tips for how to help treat hormonal acne.

We recommend this at-home hormone level test to monitor any hormone imbalances.

“When it comes to hormonal acne, the body inhabits a strong sensitivity to androgens, more specifically testosterone,” says SkinOwl founder Annie Tevelin. Studies estimate that approximately 50 percent women aged 20 to 29 experience hormonal acne. To make sure hormones are the root cause, Tevelin suggests you “run an in-depth hormone panel blood test and test it throughout the month to make sure your hormone levels are stable.” Because the hormonal cascade fluctuates depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle, she suggests testing several times throughout the month.

Clinicians should be aware of the absolute andrelative contra-indications of OCPs prior to prescription.7 According to a systematic reviewin 2014, the risk of thromboembolism with OCPs is related to both estrogen andprogestin type. Thus, the higher the estrogen concentration the greater therisk, and for the progestins it was concluded that the second generation have a lower risk than those of the third and fourthgenerations.65

    Experiment With Acne Lasers

Help! How To Treat Hormonal Acne & Stop Breakouts!

There are a few different types of in-office lasers your dermatologist can use to target and destroy bacteria within your skin, the most popular of which is Aerolase. Aerolase penetrates the skin, kills bacteria thats involved with acne, and also delivers whats called a heat shock that shrinks the oil glands and helps cut down on oil production, says Dr. Howe.

Its not overly painful, and it can be effective on some types of acnebut only to a certain degree, and not on everyone. I always warn patients that its expensive, around $300 to $400 per session, and results will depend on their acne, says Dr. Howe, who uses Aerolase in conjunction with a tried-and-true hormonal acne treatments, like a topical prescription and/or an oral prescription. Just know that lasers are not a long-term fix: Almost all patients will need a monthly maintenance treatment, he says.

    Use Acne Supplements Wisely

The one thing that determines how well a supplement works is how much of it you actually absorb.

And that is totally dependent on the health of your gut and digestive system . If these two things are not in good shape, you may not absorb much of the good stuff that its a supplement. And it can look like the supplement isnt working.

So, before you go crazy with tons of supplements, make sure youre taking care of your gut and liver as outlined above.

Once these two things are taken care of, then you want to consider taking a good daily multivitamin/multimineral supplement. My two favorites are Beyond Tangy Tangerine and Pure Synergy Multivitamin .

In addition, other supplements that some women find helpful for acne are:

    • Evening primrose oil.

    How To Glow Up

Acne can be caused by a ton of factors. Thats why you need to diversify your skin care regimen.

When treating hormonal acne, it is essential to use a multi-pronged clinical approach addressing the four causes of acne: follicular plugging, bacteria, excess sebum production, and inflammation, says Zenovia.

Some folks take a prescription medication to curb their acne. There are also lots of over-the-counter treatments to try.

    Try A Prescription Retinoid

Retinoids are a key player in any skincare regimen, but especially one for acne. Retinol creams can regulate exfoliation, decongest the pores and control oil which will all impact acne positively, says Dr. Hartman.”Retinoid products are a great option to use in adults because they also have collagen-stimulating effects to also improve the appearance of aging skin,” adds Dr. Zeichner.

    Differin Gel Acne Treatment

Because retinoids can often cause dryness or irritation at the early stages of use, both Dr. Hartman and Dr. Zeichner recommend the prescription medicine Altreno. It contains prescription strength tretinoin in a hydrating lotion vehicle that is well tolerated by most patients, says Dr. Hartman.

However, if you don’t want to use a prescription-strength retinoid, Dr. Garshick and Dr. Zeichner also recommend Differin Gel, which is a prescription-strength retinoid available over-the-counter. It contains 0.1% adapalene and works like a pipe cleaner to keep the pores clear, says Dr. Zeichner.

Natural products like green tea may have some positive effects on mild acne. However, theyre usually not powerful enough to produce any improvement in moderate to severe outbreaks of hormonal acne.

Retinoids, on the other hand, can be powerful tools for controlling your hormonal acne. Made using a derivative of vitamin A, retinoids work by speeding up your skins growth process and causing your skin to turn over more quickly than normal.

This faster turnover process means sebum doesnt have as much time to build up inside your pores, resulting in fewer pimples and milder hormonal acne outbreaks.

Retinoids can be applied topically or taken orally. The most common topical retinoid is tretinoin, a retinoic acid that you can find in our acne and other skincare products.

Using tretinoin is simple all you need to do is apply it daily. Studies of tretinoin for acne usually show that it takes three to six months to control most acne, making topical retinoids like tretinoin a mainstay of medical acne treatment.

How Can I Reduce My Risk Of Hormonal Acne

Though hormonal acne can be unavoidable, there are several things you can do to reduce your risk of getting breakouts:

    • Make lifestyle changes to reduce stress, get better sleep and eat a healthy diet.
    • Use skincare products that wont clog pores.
    • Discuss treatment options with your healthcare provider for persistent acne.

    How Stress Affects Hormonal Acne

No matter what type of stress were talking about, they all activate our stress response system aka HPA axis .

Theres a lot that the HPA axis does, but for the sake of simplicity, were going to focus on just one aspect: the adrenals.

When were stressed, the adrenals release anti-inflammatory hormones, such as cortisol.

As cortisol increases a bunch of other processes are triggered. These processes can end up contributing to acne. Below is a brief overview of how that can happen.

    1. Excess oil production

During stressful times, the adrenal glands stimulate the sebaceous glands to make more sebum.

This means more oil on your skin. Long term, this can worsen clogged pores, and make each pimple larger and more painful .

    2. Gut Dysfunction

Blood flow to the gut is reducedwhen theres a lot of stress.

Since blood carries nutrients, this means that chronic stress leads to chronically reduced blood flow to the gut.

And with less nutrients going to the gut, inflammatory conditions like leaky gut and gut dysbiosis develop.

This is majorly important for acne because some studies show that people who struggle with acne have less diverse gut bacteria than people who dont .

    3. Hormonal imbalances

When were stressed, we need more glucose in the blood as a source of energy.

And interestingly, as cortisol increases, it prevents insulin from doing its job .

This increase in androgens triggers inflammation which leads to increased sebum production, clogged pores, added stress and so on.

How to Get Rid of Hormonal Acne: Diagnosis & Treatment Options

Just before the start of a womans cycle, there is more progesterone in the skin which causes water retention. Because of this, the skin can appear puffier. When this occurs, it puts pressure on the pores and creates a narrower pore lining. Additionally, oil can get thicker because of the natural imbalance of hormones during the pre-period hormonal shift. When you have thicker oil trying to get through a narrower opening, this creates the ideal environment where breakouts can now begin.
