Acne Treatment Ingredients & Products that Really Work! | Skincare with @Susan Yara

Choosing a cleanser for acne-prone skin is never an easy task. The market is full of different products boasting of the ability to clear acne and blemishes. Most of these products tend to disappoint at the end of the day.

Harsh face cleansers will cause more harm than good so you need something gentle on the skin. Wondering what kind of cleanser will suit your acne-prone skin? Check out a few qualities you should look out for below.

Is There Such A Thing As Over

Yes. We can all get addicted to the cleansed feeling. The tightness and the scent can get us carried away with our efforts. Before we know it, were doing it multiple times of the day. Ideally, twice a day is more than enough. And with some gel face washes, even that can be too much like, for example, the Honey cleanser.

Best For Cystic Acne: La Roche

Why We Like It: This medicated formula reduces surface oil in the skin, stopping cystic acne before it starts.

Its Worth Noting: Its heavy-duty formulation can be stripping and drying for some.

Cystic acne causes painful, pus-filled acne deep under the skin that can be frustrating and difficult to get rid of. According to the dermatologists we consulted, the most important ingredient for this particular kind of blemish is 2% salicylic acid. Salicylic acid exfoliates skin to encourage quicker healing of acne while soothing painful and inflamed skin.

If you have larger pores, and struggle with sebaceous filamentstiny collections of sebum and dead skin cells around your hair folliclesyou should consider a product containing salicylic acid, says Dr. Pinkleton. Cystic acne results from blocked pores deep in the skinlike the ones Dr. Pinkleton mentionsthat can get infected and swell up.

A dermatologist favorite, La Roche-Posays Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser works to reduce oil on the skins surface, a leading cause of cystic acne.

Health asked Dr. Pinkleton for her favorite hacks for cystic acne: Cystic acne is related to excess oil production, large pores, as well as a high sugar diet or imbalances in hormones. Making a few small changes to your health regimen in addition to the right cleanser can result in big improvements in your skin, she says.

How To Shop For Acne Face Wash

Before ordering a new acne face wash, skin care experts recommend looking closely at its active ingredients. Two common acne-fighting skin care ingredients worth seeking are salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, experts told us. Generally speaking, higher concentrations of both ingredients tend to be more drying and irritating, and you should always consult your dermatologist if youre unsure about whether a product will work with your skin.

Salicylic acid can dissolve dead skin cells, noted Abby Sipe, a nurse practitioner with Dermatologists of Central States. It can also lightly exfoliate the skin and pores, which can help reduce whiteheads and blackheads, added Dr. Eileen Deignan, a board-certified dermatologist.

Deignan told us that the majority of people can tolerate a 2 percent concentration of salicylic acid in an acne face wash. However, some people with dry or sensitive skin may experience dryness, irritation and sun sensitivity with salicylic acid washes, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Blair Murphy-Rose noted in our guide to salicylic acid products.

Benzoyl peroxide helps reduce acne by decreasing the bacteria C. Acnes on the skin and within hair follicles, while also displaying anti-inflammatory properties, Sipe said. She added that this ingredient works best with more inflammatory acne like cysts, nodules, papules and pustules.

Treatment Options For Hormonal Acne

The severity of the acne may influence the type of treatment a person chooses, and people with more severe breakouts may prefer prescription oral medications or topical treatments, such as creams or gels.

A person may use acne treatment for at least 46 weeks before they see results. It is best to avoid using multiple acne treatments, to prevent irritation and new breakouts.

Hormonal acne treatments fall into the four categories below.

Self-care techniques that can help clear mild and moderate hormonal acne breakouts include:

  • avoiding exfoliating face washes, astringents, and masks
  • using noncomedogenic, oil-free skin care products
  • washing the face twice a day, once after waking up and again before going to bed
  • washing the face and showering after workouts
  • avoiding picking, touching, or popping acne
  • shaving gently and only when necessary
  • using sunscreen

There is debate about a possible link between the diet and acne. Some studies suggest that certain foods can worsen acne, while others can be beneficial. However, researchers have yet to make definitive conclusions.

Dietary changes that might help hormonal acne breakouts include:

  • Applying green tea to the skin. A

Over Scrubbing Or Exfoliating

Mir said teenage skin already sluffs dead skin cells on its own, so he discourages the use of apricot scrubs or scrubs containing beads, because they can be abrasive and irritating. Gohara also said scrubbing is a big no-no. Sometimes, teens think acne is from dirt and they start to scrub it, but scrubbing is bad, she said. Gohara recommended teens use a gentle, alcohol-free exfoliant once a week, in the form of glycolic pads.

Heres a product Gohara recommends:

Pca Skin Clearskin Facial Moisturizer

Dont forget to moisturize! Mamelak warns that while removing excess oil from the skin and clogged pores can definitely help reduce breakouts, be wary of too much of a good thing. Overly drying your skin can lead to pore-clogging flakes and actually stimulate your glands to produce more oil, he said. This calming and balancing facial moisturizer is ideal for people with combination skin.

    What Is A Facial Cleanser

A facial cleanser is simply a skincare product used to remove dirt, sebum, oil, makeup, dead skin cells, and other pollutants from the skin.

Cleansers help keep the skins pores clear and prevent skin conditions like congestion and acne.

Most of the environmental pollutants and makeup products that our skin comes in contact with are not water-soluble. This means that washing your face with only water is not enough to remove them. Facial cleansers remove these pollutants without irritating or damaging the skin.

It is important to cleanse your skin twice a day. Cleansing your facial skin at night eliminates the pollutants your skin was exposed to during the day. Cleansing your skin in the morning gets rid of any toxins your skin eliminates during the night.

Best Creamy Face Wash For Hormonal Acne

PanOxyls 4% Acne Wash contains benzoyl peroxide, which the expert says is one of the most effective OTC treatments for acne and an ingredient found most commonly found in face washes. Benzoyl peroxide is an antiseptic that kills bacteria and prevents bacteria from multiplying. It is mostly used topically to treat and prevent acne, as it is quite effective at killing the p. acnes bacteria found on the skin, Dr. Hartman explains. As it reduces acne bacteria found on the skin, there is less opportunity for that bacteria to turn into active acne. It also helps clear out pores and get rid of dead skin cells, he adds.

This creamy cleanser, which is free of fragrance and oil, also contains hydrating humectants and emollients to help balance out the formula. Though youll find higher percentages of benzoyl peroxide cleansers out there, the ingredient is equally effective and less irritating at lower percentages, so stick with 5%-and-under BP cleansers for your face unless your dermatologist says otherwise.

Our beauty editor shares her personal story.

    By Hannah Zahner

My skin loved being pregnant, but around sixth months postpartum, it took a turn for the worse. While Ive dealt with mild forehead breakouts off and on since college, I never had acne or breakouts on my jaw and cheekuntil this past year. On top of that, I am generally on top of my skincare game. I never ever go to bed without washing my faceI can count on one hand the times I havent washed my face before bed in my entire life. I eat a clean and nourishing diet, use organic high-powered skincare, and put a lot of effort into supporting my health holistically.

Although it seemed like my skin should be okay, I was still dealing with hormonal acne, and my current routine wasnt working.

While Im obsessed with skincare, I dont love the idea that you have a lineup of 20 serums to get good results. In my quest to calm my skin, I had carts filled with hundreds of dollars worth of skincare, ready to pull the trigger to do whatever I could to clear my skin up. Thankfully, I took a breather and remembered that theres more to skin health than just throwing products at it. Skin is a reflection of your internal health and while yes, Ive found new products that have supported my skins health along the way, there were some major non-product-related steps that were crucial when figuring out how to clear up hormonal acne.

Scroll on for what Ive learned, both internally and topically with products.
