Does Melatonin Work For Kids

Don't Miss

Does Food Contain Melatonin

Does Melatonin help kids deal with daylight saving time?

A study published in Food and Nutrition Research notes that certain food products do contain various amounts of melatonin as measured by immunological and chromatographic laboratory techniques. How consumption of these various foods might affect endogenous production sleep or was not evaluated:

  • Tomatoes
  • Wine, beer
  • Cows milk

Research finds that melatonin synthesis depends upon availability of the essential amino acid tryptophan, a needed component of the diet. If intake of tryptophan is severely restricted, synthesis of melatonin is significantly reduced in humans.

In the Nurses Health Study, no link was found between the consumption of various nutrients, such as folate, vitamin B6 and zinc and increased urinary excretion.

Diets rich in vegetables, fruits and grain products will contain considerable levels of dietary melatonin. The overall effect of dietary consumption on nighttime levels of melatonin is very limited. Melatonin production is primarily driven by the effects of light and darkness and by age, declining as we get older.

Melatonin Is Not Meant For Kids

In her sleep consulting practice, McGinn has met babies who have been on melatonin from as young as four months of age. But, of the more than 500 melatonin-containing products licensed for sale in Canada, only two are licensed for teenagers , and there arent any approved for kids under 12.

Cummings, who does recommend melatonin to some of his pediatric patients as a treatment for managing insomnia, says the average kid under five would not have developed the type of sleep disorder where melatonin could be useful, and therefore they wouldnt need it.

My Child Is Already On Melatonin Do I Need To Freak Out

I dont think so, as there is little concrete evidence of significant harm. However, if you started melatonin on your own I beg you to discuss it with your childs physician to see if it is really necessary. If your child has been using it long-term and sleeping well, you can consider slowly reducing the dose and seeing if it is still really necessary. Try to use it as needed as opposed to nightly. Also, I would take a hard look at sleep hygiene and ensure that you are ensuring good bedtime processes such as a high quality bedtime routine and avoidance of screen time for at least an hour prior to bedtime. I would try to reduce the dose, and potentially only use it as needed as opposed to nightly.

Less is more, Buenaver says. Take 1 to 3 milligrams two hours before bedtime. To ease jet lag, try taking melatonin two hours before your bedtime at your destination, starting a few days before your trip. You can also adjust your sleep-wake schedule to be in sync with your new time zone by simply staying awake when you reach your destinationdelaying sleep until your usual bedtime in the new time zone. Also, get outside for natural light exposure. Thats what I do, Buenaver says.

What Should Parents Be Concerned About

The parenting website of the A.A.P. has warned of concerns that melatonin might affect puberty, but so far there isnt any solid evidence of this.

In a 2019 review of recent studies about melatonin and puberty, the authors found it difficult to draw strong conclusions. Only a few studies have examined the topic on a long-term basis, and these had small sample sizes, incomplete follow-up and poor measures of pubertal timing, the authors said.

There are other concerns, too. Side effects can include morning sleepiness, nightmares, agitation, headaches and increased urination at night. And melatonin could interact with certain medications. But in general, Dr. Owens said, its pretty well tolerated among her patients.

More worrisome is the lack of strict regulation of melatonin products. A 2017 study tested 31 different melatonin supplements and found most of the supplements did not have the same amount of melatonin listed on their labels. In addition, 26 percent of the supplements contained serotonin, a hormone that can have harmful effects even at relatively low levels.

I was so shocked by that, and it completely changed my recommendations to families, Dr. Owens said. She now recommends the brand Natrol because it has been used in clinical trials that evaluated its purity.

Melatonin Dosage For Children

Short-term use of melatonin in small doses appears to be safe and well-tolerated by most children. The effective dosage for children ranges from 0.05 milligrams per kilogram to 5 milligrams of melatonin. When children experience side effects from taking melatonin, theyre typically mild and may include:

  • Medical professionals may recommend melatonin for children with conditions that affect their sleep, such as insomnia, autism spectrum disorder, or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Several studies have shown melatonin supplements can significantly improve overall sleep times by 25 minutes to 48 minutes, on average, for children with these conditions.

However, there havent been enough studies of melatonin in children for experts to determine an official recommended dosage or any potential long-term safety risks. Since melatonin is a hormone, its possible that taking supplemental melatonin could affect other aspects of hormone development in children, but further research is needed.

If your child is having sleep problems, experts recommend consulting your doctor before giving them melatonin. Research indicates that for half of the cases where melatonin was used to treat pediatric insomnia, better sleep habits were just as effective at relieving the childs sleep problems.

    Practice Good Sleep Hygiene

Proper sleep hygiene can also improve sleep quality and quantity. Research shows that good sleep hygiene alone can eliminate pediatric insomnia in 50% of the instances in which melatonin is suggested for treatment. The combination of sleep hygiene and melatonin is more effective at improving sleep in children than melatonin alone.

A bedtime routine at a consistent time each night provides comfort to help your child fall asleep. Your bedtime routine can include soothing activities such as taking a bath and reading a book or singing lullabies.

Experts also recommend that parents limit their childrens use of electronics in the hours before bedtime. The blue light from devices, such as phones, tablets, TVs, and video game consoles, can delay the onset of natural melatonin release.

If You Use Melatonin How Much And What Type Should You Give Your Child

Melatonin for Sleep: DOES IT ACTUALLY WORK?! | Doctor ER

This is an important discussion to have with your pediatrician because there are no hard and fast rules. A 2014 paper in the European Journal of Pediatric Neurology recommended doses of one milligram for children and adolescents. The maximum dosage for children less than 88 pounds is three milligrams, the study said, and children who weigh more than 88 pounds should not take more than five milligrams.

Dr. Owens and Dr. Rodriguez both said they would not recommend more than five milligrams of melatonin for a child.

Dr. Canapari said he generally starts with half a milligram and goes up to a maximum dosage of around three milligrams.

My experience is that higher doses dont tend to give you a lot of benefit, and can even bring unwanted side effects like headaches, morning grogginess or vivid dreams, he said.

As for which type, check your melatonin packaging to see if it has a logo from either UL, United States Pharmacopeia or ConsumerLab.com. These companies test dietary supplements to ensure that they meet their standards for purity.

Families who are using melatonin should always combine it with behavioral interventions like a consistent bedtime routine, sleep experts said.

How Many Kids Use Melatonin And Does It Help

It is difficult to know how many children are taking melatonin supplements in the United States they do not require a prescription, so there is no insurance data to track.

But the demand for melatonin appears to be growing. The technology company SPINS, which supports the wellness industry, found in March that sales of childrens melatonin supplements in retail stores grew 87 percent over the prior year.

When the stay-home orders hit, the shelves were empty of them, Kelly Porciello, a mother of two in San Diego, said of the childrens melatonin gummies her family typically buys for her 6-year-old son. We stopped using them when our supply ran out.

As many as 25 percent of children and adolescents have problems falling asleep. While melatonin can help some children fall asleep, it doesnt typically help a child who wakes up frequently in the middle of the night.

It seems to be more effective among children and the elderly, said Alcibiades Rodriguez, M.D., the medical director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center-Sleep Center at New York University.

Adelaide Mestre, who lives in Manhattan, confided that before giving her daughter melatonin, she and her husband hadnt had an evening to themselves in two and a half years and had practically forgotten how to relate to one another. Their daughter, now 6, has been taking it every night for the last year.

    Melatonin Sleep And Adhd

Melatonin is a hormone that is naturally produced in the brain in response to darkness. It helps our bodies maintain healthy sleep-wake cycles, where melatonin essentially tells the brain, Its time to start getting to sleep.

The ADHD brain, however, has a delay in melatonin onset. Research shows that the onset of melatonin for most adults is roughly 9:30 pm, but in adults with ADHD it happens more than an hour later. In children with ADHD, the melatonin onset is similarly late around 10:15 pm.1

This delay in melatonin onset is also associated with late sleep onset the time it takes for children and adults with ADHD to fall asleep. It typically takes a neurotypical person up to two hours to fall asleep after melatonin onset. In adults with ADHD, it may take three hours.2

Melatonins delayed onset helps to explain, in part, why people with ADHD often experience sleep problems. Research shows that 25 to 50 percent of people with ADHD have a sleep disorder34.

Taking melatonin as an ADHD supplement under the guidance of a pediatrician or primary care physician, therefore, can help children and adults with ADHD get to sleep safely and naturally.

How Long Does It Take For Melatonin To Kick In

With the recommended dose of melatonin , it takes around 1-2 hours to induce sleep. Hence, you should take melatonin supplements two hours before your bedtime.

If you want to take melatonin to avoid getting jetlag, you need to start taking the pills a few days before you make your trip. Once you reach the new time zone, take the melatonin sleeping aid 2 hours before you go to bed.

    Melatonin Dosage For Older Adults

Our melatonin levels naturally , disrupting the sleep-wake cycles for many older adults. As a result, older adults may have an increased sensitivity to melatonin. In a meta-analysis of 16 studies, melatonin dosages between 0.1 milligram and 50 milligrams per kilogram were administered to older adults aged 55 to 77 years old. In all of the studies, the melatonin levels remained higher among the older adults when compared to younger adults and stayed higher for a longer period of time leading to increased daytime drowsiness. The more melatonin the person took, the more pronounced these effects.

As a result, researchers recommend older adults start with the lowest dose of melatonin possible. Lower doses may help older adults sleep better without disrupting their circadian rhythms and causing prolonged drowsiness.

Older adults with dementia should avoid melatonin, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

    What The Experts Do

Lower the Light to Prep for Sleep

Johns Hopkins sleep expert Luis F. Buenaver, Ph.D., C.B.S.M., keeps the lights low in the evening to help his mind and body prepare forsleep. But if he has to work in the evening or answer emails, he usesfilters to screen out the blue and green wavelengths of light emitted byhis smartphone and computer. Your brain associates this light withdaytime, and it can interfere with melatonins sleep-promoting effects. Afilter can help. Many types of blue-light filters are available online andin stores.

    Melatonin Supplements May Affect Fertility

Melatonin doesnt just help set our circadian rhythm it also helps govern reproductive function. In fact, in Europe high doses of melatonin have been used as a contraceptive. The dose used was 75 mg, which is just 15 mg higher than what can be bought over-the-counter in the United States. When you consider that weight is often factored in when determining dosage, it makes you wonder if lower dosages could have a similar effect in some people.

What Is Melatonin What Does Melatonin Do

    Is Melatonin Safe for Kids?

Melatonin is a hormone which is naturally produced by the pineal gland in your brain. It is both a chronobiotic agent, meaning that it regulates your circadian or body clock and a hypnotic, meaning that at higher doses it may induce sleep. Melatonin is usually used for its hypnotic effect, but it does not have this effect in everyone. Only the chronobiotic effect occurs in all individuals. The natural rise of melatonin levels in the body 1-3 hours before sleep onset is known as the dim light melatonin onset . This is the signal involved in body clock scheduling of sleep and corresponds to the end of the wakefulness signal produced by the circadian system. Children with insomnia may be given melatonin after their scheduled bedtime passes what this means is that their bodies are not yet ready for sleep. This is one reason why bedtime fading can be so effective for some children. The doses used clinically greatly exceed the amount secreted in the body.
