Will Hormonal Acne Ever Go Away

Why Do I Still Have Acne At 30

How I Cured My Adult Hormonal Cystic Acne Naturally (no accutane)

What causes acne in your 30s? As we age, our body also goes through many changes, Suarez says, and hormonal shifts are the main cause of adult acne. As a result, skin is more vulnerable to hormone changes as an adult. Hormonal changes increase oil production, leading to clogged pores and breakouts.

Does Progesterone Cause Acne

Yes, fluctuation in the levels of sex hormones during your menstrual cycle may also contribute to acne before your period.

Progesterone levels rise during the middle of the cycle. This may stimulate the sebaceous glands in the skin. However, the role of progesterone in sebum production is uncertain.

Increased progesterone may also raise your body temperature and worsen sweating, leading to clogged pores. This buildup of sebum beneath the skins surface along with dirt, dead skin cells, and bacteria results in breakouts of acne before and during your period.

How Do I Treat Hormonal Acne

Based on the severity of your acne, different treatment options are available to reduce sebum production, pimple formation and painful inflammation:

  • Blackheads and whiteheads: Topical cream .
  • Inflammatory acne: Topical retinoid and/or topical antibiotic and/or benzoyl peroxide.
  • Moderate to severe acne: Antibiotic and/or isotretinoin .
  • Cystic acne: Steroid injection .

Turns Out Acne Is Not Just A Teen Issue

What causes hormonal acne?

The myth of acne is that it belongs to a certain age group: teenagers. If only! Certainly, as women get older the incidence of acne goes down but its still significant, says Dr. Catherine Zip, a Calgary-based dermatologist and spokesperson for the Acne and Rosacea Society of Canada, who sees it frequently in patients.

Whether the condition is more widespread now than in previous generations, or simply talked about more openly, is still under debate. We dont know if its becoming more common because we dont necessarily have statistics from thirty years back on adult acne in women. But it tends to be more hormonally influenced, it tends to change with her menstrual cycle, says Dr. Zip. Thus, as nature would have it, the end of adult acne coincides with another biological milestone: menopause.

Basically, if patients are 35 or 40 years old and still struggling with acne maybe they havent developed it for the first time, but it seems to be more of an issue as they get older I tell them theyre really not going to get over it until they go through menopause.

Not taking care of your skin and going to bed without washing your face can cause or worsen acne, says Engelman. In addition, you should wash your pillowcase frequently and keep your makeup brushes clean. Also, dont share your makeup brushes with friends as this can transfer their dirt and oil onto your skin.

Your makeup could also be clogging your pores and contributing to your acne. Look for makeup and skincare products that wont clog pores or have labels like non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic and oil-free.

Avoid touching your face. Dont touch, pick or pop pimples as it can make acne worse and cause scarring. If you have a large pimple or acne cyst, talk to your dermatologist and they can determine if an acne extraction is needed.

At What Age Do You Stop Getting Acne

Acne is most common in girls from the ages of 14 to 17, and in boys from the ages of 16 to 19. Most people have acne on and off for several years before their symptoms start to improve as they get older. Acne often disappears when a person is in their mid-20s. In some cases, acne can continue into adult life.

It’s not always possible to prevent acne. But these tips can help:

Note: Acne isn’t really helped by the sun. A tan can temporarily make acne look less severe, but it won’t help it go away permanently and some people find that the oils their skin makes after being in the sun make their pimples worse.

Start Seed Cycling For Acne

Seed cycling is a food-based approach to hormone balance that is synchronized with your menstrual cycle.

With seed cycling you eat a specific set of seeds during each phase of your cycle. It looks like this:

  • Follicular phase: flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds.
  • Luteal phase: sesame seeds and sunflower seeds.

Each set of seeds provides nutrients that support how our hormones naturally fluctuate throughout the month.

Now, even though theres not a lot of scientific research around seed cycling, its a method that is often taught to naturopathic doctors.

And there is anecdotal evidence from women on social media and other blogs who have successfully used seed cycling to improve their hormones and skin.

If you need help with this protocol, then be sure to read this beginners guide to seed cycling for hormone balance. Its got all the details you need to get started.

Why Do Androgens Cause Hormonal Acne

Treating HORMONAL Adult Acne

For the majority of women, hormonal acne occurs because their skin is sensitive to the normal levels of androgens like Testosterone.

Although considered to be a male hormone, it is normal for women to produce small amounts of Testosterone. Testosterone is an important hormone for women as it helps strengthen bones and muscles, provides a healthy libido and regulates the menstrual cycle. Androgens are the name for male hormones. Women produce other androgens as well as Testosterone. These are dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate , dehydroepiandrosterone , androstenedione . These three androgens are not very active by themselves and have to be converted to Testosterone or Dihydrotestosterone first.

Testosterone is produced by the ovaries and the adrenal glands. However, cells in the skin also make Testosterone from DHEAS. Skin cells, especially the cells in the sebaceous glands, also make DHT from Testosterone.

Hormonal acne also occurs when there are conditions in which too many androgens are produced such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

How Is Adult Acne Different From Teen Acne

Aside from the hormonal differences in teenage acne versus adult acne, it also typically appears in different spots. According to Dr. Green, acne during adolescence usually pops up in the T-zone, chest, and upper back, while adult acne caused by hormonal changes tends to appear around the chin and jawline. You might also find yourself dealing with adult cystic acne, a type of acne that forms deep underneath the surface of the skin, which can lead to pain, inflammation, and infection.

The other difference is that your skin, like many other things in your more mature body, doesnt bounce back as quickly as it used to. Because the skins cell turnover rate slows with age, adult skin takes a longer time to heal from breakouts, which may lead to acne scars that are hard to treat, explains Dr. Green. Adult skin is different from teen skin due to the decrease in collagen and elastin, longer cell-turnover rate, and prone to sensitivity and dehydration. Therefore, treatment and skin-care ingredients for teenage acne may be too harsh for adults with acne.

Dont Underestimate Natures Healing Power

As you can see, I am very passionate about the topic of hormonal acne because it is often not discussed by mainstream skincare professionals when treating blemished skin.

Although there are wonderful topical products on the market , addressing hormones is a huge component for achieving lifelong clear skin. Not only have I successfully done this for myself, thousands of NAC clients have as well, and so can you. Let us show you how!

Use Acne Supplements Wisely

The one thing that determines how well a supplement works is how much of it you actually absorb.

And that is totally dependent on the health of your gut and digestive system . If these two things are not in good shape, you may not absorb much of the good stuff that its a supplement. And it can look like the supplement isnt working.

So, before you go crazy with tons of supplements, make sure youre taking care of your gut and liver as outlined above.

Once these two things are taken care of, then you want to consider taking a good daily multivitamin/multimineral supplement. My two favorites are Beyond Tangy Tangerine and Pure Synergy Multivitamin .

In addition, other supplements that some women find helpful for acne are:

  • Evening primrose oil.

Adopt A Simpler And More Natural Skin Care Routine

When creating a skin care routine for hormonal acne, look for products that are:

  • Non-comedogenic i.e. doesnt include ingredients that clog pores.
  • As natural as possible. In particular, you want to avoid potential hormone disruptors or pro-inflammatory ingredients. This means watching out for ingredients like parabens, triclosan, phthalates, siloxanes, BHA and BHT.

Also, be careful not to over clean your skin. Even though oily skin and clogged pores can lead to an overgrowth of bacteria, over cleaning the skin especially with harsh ingredients can also destroy the healthy bacteria that naturally sits on the skin.

Overall, less is usually better.

As for how to get your hands on more natural products, you can go the DIY route or buy from companies that use natural ingredients. Ive put together this list of brands and products that you can use.

Lastly, consider using a nourishing face oil like jojoba as your daily moisturizer.

Now, you might think this would make your acne worse, butjojoba oil is the only oil that is closest to the natural sebum that our skin produces.

And research suggests that applying jojoba oil on the skin actually signals to your body that it doesnt need to produce more sebum .

In addition, jojoba oil is non-comedogenic so your pores can actually breathe!

How To Know If Your Acne Is Hormonal

In general, acne is considered to be hormone-related if it :

  • Occurs on the lower part of the face, such as the chin and jawline.
  • Flares up before your period, during menopause, during pregnancy or other phases of life when theres a significant shift in hormones.
  • Becomes worse as you go on or off hormone therapies .

In addition to the above, hormone-related conditions like PCOS can also cause acne to worsen.

This is mainly due to the fact that high androgens and insulin resistance are quite common in PCOS patients. And as weve seen, imbalances in both of those hormones contribute significantly to inflammation and hormonal acne.

NOTE: the tips in this section are general guidelines. The only way to know for sure if your acne is hormone-related to get your hormones tested by a doctor.

Low Dose Birth Control Pills

These tablets and devices are low in Estrogen and, therefore, tend to increase the bodies Androgen levels as the Estrogen drop. Think of a teeter-totteras one goes down the other goes up.

As a general rule of thumb, those with the potential for higher androgenic symptoms should be avoided for people prone to acne because they promote breakouts. As an acne sufferer, it is critical to speak with your doctor about selecting a form of birth control that is higher in estrogen and lower in androgen potency.

SOLUTION: Take out the IUD or come off the low-dose birth control pill and switch to a safe tablet if you are on birth control for a said reason. Here at Natural Acne Clinic, we are not proponents of using birth control pills or devices to balance hormone levels or to clear acne. With that said, it is ok to be on certain types of birth control to prevent pregnancy and keep your skin clear.

What Acne Treatments Are Best For Me

That depends on many factors: your age, whether youâre male or female, how severe your acne is, and how long youâve had it, among others. There are several options available.

For mild to moderate acne, many dermatologists will start with a combination of a topical cream or gel containing either a retinoid or benzoyl peroxide along with a topical antibiotic. For more inflammatory acne, an oral antibiotic may be added. For more significant cases of acne, women may be placed on birth control pills or on the drug spironolactone, a water pill which also blocks male hormones. They may also prescribe the newly approved topical treatment clascoterone which works a lot like spironolactone, only as an ointment.

Severe cases of acne may be treated with the drug isotretinoin, which is very effective. However, side effects and blood abnormalities must be monitored monthly and requires registration with the FDA to obtain a prescription. There are also various types of light or photodynamic therapies available.

How To Treat Adult Acne

Okay, enough of the bad news. How do we actually get rid of adult acne? Thankfully, all doctors interviewed say there’s hope and point to a range of ingredients that can help target acne and breakouts.

Dr. Gross says to look for exfoliating, pore-clearing OTC products. “To treat acne most effectivelyyet gentlystart out by using over-the-counter anti-acne remedies that contain either exfoliating, pore-clearing salicylic acid or bacteria-banishing benzoyl peroxide, such as my All-Over Blemish Solution . I recommend looking for products that contain bisabolol, an active ingredient derived from chamomile extract that helps soothe redness and reduce inflammation.”

Key Ingredients

Benzoyl peroxide is an organic acid in the peroxide family that has been used to treat acne because of its keratolytic, moderate comedolytic, and antibacterial properties, which include the reduction of P. acnes and Staph. aureus on the skin.

“Sulfur is also a powerful ingredient that controls the oil that feeds the bacteria and can be found in Clarifying Colloidal Sulfur Mask ,” Dr. Gross says.

Key Ingredients

Sulfur is a natural element that is an essential component for all living cells. Sulfur-based products may be active against P. acnes but is rarely used a treatment.

Dr. Thornfeldt also recommends products that address bacterial and yeast-causing acne, like his Epionce Lytic Plus Tx cream . ” salicylic acid, azelaic acid, willow bark extract, and zinc pyrithione,” he explains.
