Natural Hormone Balance Is Possible With Pcos

BALANCE YOUR HORMONES | 7 tips to balance hormones naturally

One possible cause of PCOS is genetics, although this isnt always the case . New research shows that a toxic burden from environmental toxins is wreaking havoc on womens reproductive systems. Specifically, studies have shown endocrine disrupting chemicals can mimic hormones and interfere with metabolism .

While it is easy to say you will start limiting your toxin exposure, this is not always easy to do depending on where you live and your job. For example, people who live in cities are at a higher risk of environmental toxins.

Sleep

Hormone levels can fluctuate due to poor sleep, an unhealthy diet, and stress . Poor sleep has been linked to obesity, diabetes, and a poor diet. Ask any doctor about the importance of a good nights sleep. We cannot stress enough how important proper rest is for natural hormone balance and overall health and wellness. Unhealthy habits include looking at screens before bed. Do not look at any screens for at least one hour before going to bed. Artificial light can mess with the circadian rhythm of our bodies and throw hormones out of whack .

Air Purification

One method for natural hormone balance is having an air purification system for both your home and workplace . While studies focus on the cardiopulmonary benefits of air purifiers, eliminating toxins from outdoor sources can improve overall health and wellness .

More Healthy Fats and Less Sugar

Salmon And Albacore Tuna

Fat and cholesterol are the building blocks of hormones. You need enough cholesterol to make sex hormones like estrogen and testosterone. The key is to choose fats high in omega-3s and to limit saturated fats . Salmon, canned albacore tuna, walnuts, flaxseed, olive oil, avocados and chia seeds are high in omega-3 fatty acids.

“Salmon also stabilizes your hunger hormones and is high in vitamin D, which helps regulate female testosterone levels,” says Carrie Gabriel M.S., RDN, a dietitian and owner of Steps2Nutrition. “The good fats in fish improve overall hormonal communication. The endocrine system uses hormones to communicate with the brain, which in turn boosts our mood and gives us better cognitive skills.”

What Are Menopause Supplements

Menopause supplements are typically a combination of botanicals and/or vitamins and minerals administered to alleviate one or more of the symptoms women experience during menopause, says Dr. Petrucci. Black cohosh, red clover, chasteberry, dong quai and evening primrose are popular botanicals you often see in menopause supplements, she says.

While theres a lot of anecdotal evidence to suggest these botanicals can provide some reliefparticularly with hot flashesresearchers say many botanicals found in menopause supplements offer limited scientific evidence showing their effectiveness and long-term safetyGeller S.E., Studee L. Effects Of Hormone Imbalance On Tiredness, Weight Gain, Sex Drive AND Depression

Because hormones influence so many different parts of the body, a hormonal imbalance can disrupt the body in several ways.

For example, if estrogen and progesterone levels are out of balance, this may cause irregular periods, heavy periods, the inability to ovulate, and difficulties with getting pregnant. On the other hand, if testosterone levels are too high, this may lead to increased acne, unwanted hair growth, and/or male-patterned baldness. Other potential disruptions to your body include the inability to lose/gain weight, problems with sleep, and increased irritability or mood swings.

What Causes Hormonal Imbalance

Just as there are many types of hormones with many functions, a hormonal imbalance has many causes. Certain medications, stress, mental disorders, injuries, or even tumors can lead to hormonal imbalance. Unfortunately, because the body depends on a precise balance of hormones to function properly, certain hormonal imbalance conditions, like diabetes and hyperthyroidism, can throw off the balance of other hormones as well.

What Causes Hormone Imbalance

Virtually everyone experiences imbalanced hormone levels at some point in their livesparticularly us women! These imbalances are often a result of natural changes that occur with age, such as puberty and menopause. When you were growing up, hormones triggered bone and muscle growth. They also set in motion the reproductive changes that led to menstruation and fertility in young women, and sexual maturity in young men. This surge of hormones is behind the acne, mood swings, and other teen issues that affect most adolescents.

Top 5 Foods For Hormone Balance

One of my favourite parts of working with patients is teaching them about what foods help to support their hormone balance goals, and how to incorporate these into their daily routines. In this day and age, its easy to forget that every single cell in our bodies is created from the foods that we eat. All of our hormones and neurotransmitters that influence how we feel every day are built from the proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals that we nourish ourselves with. If there is ONE thing that I can leave patients with when the see me, it is the power of food as medicine.

In this article, I will teach you the top 5 hormone balancing foods that I recommend to all of my patients who are suffering from bothersome hormone symptoms.

The most frequent hormone imbalance I see is elevated estrogen and low progesterone. This is sometimes called estrogen dominance.

Symptoms of estrogen dominance can include:

  • Breast tenderness at ovulation or during the PMS time
  • Fibrocystic breasts
  • PMS especially feeling irritable, tearful, or having bothersome mood swings
  • PMS-related headaches or migraines
  • Weight gain around the hips and bum
  • Water retention or feeling puffy
  • Anxiety, nervousness
  • Difficulty falling asleep or insomnia
  • Short menstrual cycle
  • Spotting before the period

Swap Carbs For Healthy Fats

Foods that balance hormones include a variety of fat-containing foods that provide short-, medium- and long-chain fatty acids. Your body needs various types of fats to create hormones, including saturated fat and cholesterol.

Not only are these essential fats fundamental building blocks for hormone production, but they keep inflammation levels low, boost your metabolism and promote weight loss.

Healthy fats have the opposite effect of refined carbohydrates, which lead to inflammation and can mess with the balance of your hormones.

My four favorite sources of anti-inflammatory, healthy fats include coconut oil, avocados, grass-fed butter and wild-caught salmon.

  • Coconut oil uses are plentiful. For example, coconut oil has natural antibacterial and fat-burning effects.
  • Avocado benefits include improving heart health, lowering inflammation, controlling your appetite, and contributing to your daily intake of fiber and nutrients, such as potassium.
  • Salmon nutrition is also impressive. Its one of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to lower inflammation and help with cognitive functions. Omega-3 fatty acids are a large component of brain-cell membranes and are important for cell-to-cell communication in the brain. Research shows that omega-3 fatty acids help protect against hippocampal neuronal loss and reduce pro-inflammatory responses.

How to Balance Your Hormones The Right Way with Dr. Jolene Brighten

Many nutritional supplements on the market claim to treat menopause and hormonal imbalance. However, few of them are backed up by scientific evidence.

Many of these supplements contain plant-derived hormones. These are sometimes called bioidentical hormones, because they chemically resemble the bodys natural hormones. Theres no evidence to suggest that they work better than regular hormone therapy, however.

Some people find that yoga helps ease symptoms of hormonal imbalance. Yoga is excellent for your strength, flexibility, and balance. It may also aid in weight loss, which can help regulate your hormones.

You can also make the following lifestyle changes:

  • Lose weight. If your doctor has recommended it, a reduction in body weight may help regulate menstrual cycles and increase the chances of getting pregnant. Weight loss may also help improve erectile function.
  • Eat well. A balanced diet is an important part of overall health.
  • Use lubes or moisturizers free of parabens, glycerin, and petroleum.
  • Avoid hot flash triggers when possible. Try to identify things that commonly trigger your hot flashes, such as warm temperatures, spicy foods, or hot beverages.
  • Remove unwanted hair. If you have excess facial or body hair, you can use hair removal cream, laser hair removal, or electrolysis.

What’s Within Our Control

Some hormones arent at all within our control. Sometimes theres nothing we can door not doto alter some of them. Sometimes thats goodsince many have to do with growth, development and large life changes. At other times, thats bad. For example, in type 1 diabetes, the pancreas can no longer make insulin and patients with diabetes have to inject it daily.

However, there are a lot of things we do every day that trigger our hormones.

Technically, we cant control hormones, but we can certainly do things to influence them, he notes. Foods we choose to eat or drink can cause our hormone levels to go up or down. Extra weight can also have a significant impact on the way hormones work.

Unfortunately, for the majority of people suffering from hormonal disorders, relying on these types of synthetic treatments often does three things:

  • It makes people dependent on taking prescription drugs for the rest of their lives in order to keep symptoms under control.
  • It simply masks the patients symptoms but doesnt solve them, which means that the patient can continue to develop abnormalities in other areas of the body while the disorder progresses.
  • It potentially causes a higher risk for serious side effects, such as stroke, osteoporosis, anxiety, reproductive problems, cancer and more.

Weight Gain Or Difficulty Losing Weight

Why do so many people struggle with weight loss and maintenance? Usually, its because they are eating nutrient-poor foods and working too hard. The body processes this hard work as stress and when the body is stressed, it goes into survival or fight or flight mode, producing cortisol. When youre chronically stressed, your cortisol is always high and in an effort to protect itself from whatever danger it senses, your body holds onto fat as a form of energy.
